The Take

Two of the top teams in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague meet with a lot at stake when Real Madrid hosts Fenerbahce Istanbul. In the past two seasons alone, these teams have clashed at the Final Four and in the playoffs, so both know about high stakes. Madrid (21-7) enters the game tied for the best record in the league, which it will keep if it wins out. In fact, Madrid will clinch the top spot if it wins and CSKA Moscow falls, but a Madrid loss would open the door for Moscow to move ahead. Fenerbahce (17-11) remains in fourth place despite losing three of its last four games, but fourth place is the lowest spot in the table that brings with it home-court advantage for the playoffs and more losses could see it fall into fifth or lower. However, if both Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens and Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz lose in Round 29, a Fenerbahce victory clinches fourth place. Fenerbahce has won four straight games against Madrid, including a 78-77 nail biter in Round 10 on James Nunnally’s late free throw. With Sergio Llull (16.6 ppg., 6.2 apg.) and Luka Doncic at guard and Anthony Randolph (10.7 ppg.,5.3 rpg.) and Gustavo Ayon inside, Madrid has a dangerous and balanced lineup. Fenerbahce will likely be without the injured Kostas Sloukas, but Bogdan Bogdanovic (13.5 ppg.) and Bobby Dixon (11.4 ppg.) make up a strong perimeter tandem, while Ekpe Udoh (12.2 ppg., 7.6 rpg., 2.2 bpg.) and Jan Vesely are an intimidating pair in the paint. Madrid has the league’s No. 2 offense (86.7 ppg.), but when all systems are going, Fenerbahce can match that output.
