The Take

The series moves to Spain for Game 3 where Real Madrid will host Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens on Wednesday. Los Blancos made their experience count in Game 2 and secured a win that tied the series 1-1 and gave them the home-court advantage. Game 2 was a playoff game by the book with a great atmosphere and tension that was solved in the final minutes. Captain Felipe Reyes shined again with 18 points and 5 rebounds, with help from red-hot Jaycee Carroll (17) and Trey Thompkins (12). Mike James's 20 points were not enough Panathinaikos, which was outrebounded 24-43. The Greens also had a rough time from beyond the arc (7 for 26) while Madrid excelled at 55% (11 for 20). All that and the 28 of 37 free throws by Madrid (Luka Doncic scored all of his 8 points from the stripe with no misses) gave it the win in a tough atmosphere. Things change now, as Madrid will have a packed WiZink Center in its favor and Coach Xavi Pascual will have to find the recipe to bring the series back to Athens. Adreian Payne (13 points) played his best game yet with the Greens, so that is surely a welcome piece of news for Pascual, as James, Nick Calathes (12) and Chris Singleton (11) will have a hard time if they try to carry all the weight on their shoulders. For Game 3, Madrid will need the young blood to step up as well. Doncic was severely limited in Game 2, as was Walter Tavares, and they will need to be key pieces in this game if Real Madrid wants to advance. The series has now moved to the terrain almost everyone expected, and the battle is on!
