The Take

The second week of the playoffs opens in Lithuania, where Zalgiris Kaunas will try to protect the home-court advantage in claimed last week when it hosts Olympiacos Piraeus in Game 3 of their series. Zalgiris won the series opener 78-87 after overtime as Brandon Davies and Kevin Pangos combined for 41 points. The Reds evened things with a 79-68 Game 2 victory in which Jamel McLean posted 21 points. The big variable between the games was the Zalgiris attack; after making 10 three-pointers, grabbing 14 offensive rebounds and committing just 7 turnovers in the opener, Coach Jasikevicius's men sank 5 threes, took only 3 offensive boards and coughed up 16 turnovers in Game 2. Those are surely going to be among the topics Zalgiris will have addressed for Game 3, as well as getting Paulius Jankunas more involved on offense after he totaled just 4 points in the first two games. Olympiacos, which is expected to be without center Nikola Milutinov, hopes to have Georgios Printezis and Kostas Papanikolaou in top shape after both have recently struggled with injuries. Three matchups that could play significant roles in the game are between guards Pangos and Olympiacos star Vassilis Spanoulis, in the paint between the hosts’ Davies and the visitors’ McLean and at power forward between veterans Jankunas and Printezis. Though Olympiacos may have carried a significant experience advantage into the series, after winning the opener and now set to play Game 3 at home in front of its passionate fans, Zalgiris figures to be plenty confident when it takes the floor on Tuesday.

Head Coaches

SFAIROPOULOS, IOANNIS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"Zalgiris has the advantage but now plays on its home-court and the pressure is on Zalgiris players. We have the experience and we know what we must do to increase our chances for qualification. We must be ready and focus in both games. As far as injuries, it has not changed much... Printezis did not practice and it is not sure that he will play in Game 3. Milutinov is still out... But as in the previous game, many players will give their everything despite their injury problems."

Players

PAPAPETROU, IOANNIS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"We have been in the past in the same situation. Last year we lost the home advantage against Efes but we managed to take the ticket for the Final Four. We have the experience and the quality to take at least one big win in Kaunas. We must control the rebounds and play hard defense."
