ASVEL Lyon Villeurbanne took out the host club, Telenet Ostend, with a 77-86 victory in their first game at the 2014 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds at Sleuyter Arena. Edwin Jackson scored 13 fourth-quarter points to keep ASVEL in front and Amara Sy tallied 23 points and 10 rebounds to pace the winners, who will face fellow French League club Strasbourg in the second of three qualifying rounds on Thursday. Ostend will play its 2014-15 European campaign in the Eurocup. ASVEL threatened to pull away early when David Lighty free throws made it 17-24, but a 10-0 Ostend run that bridged the first two quarters put the hosts ahead. Mateusz Ponitka led the Ostend surge at the start of the second quarter. David Andersen carried ASVEL back and the teams went into halftime deadlocked at 43-43. However Amara Sy scored three baskets and Taurean Green hit a three-pointer in a 0-10 run early in the third quarter as ASVEL took off. The lead cleared double figures, but Jared Berggren and Ponitka helped Ostend rally. The difference was just 3 midway through the fourth quarter, but Jackson scored 9 straight points to ice the game with time to spare. Jackson finished with 20 points, while Green tallied 17 points and 4 steals and Andersen scored all of his 13 points in the first half. Ponitka led Ostend with 17 points, Berggren scored 13, JP Prince 12 and Wes Wilkinson 10.

Lighty sent in his own miss for the game’s first basket. Gregory Echenique scored in the paint to get Ostend going. Prince dunked on the break to bring cheers from the home crowd, but Sy’s jumper kept the teams even at 6-6. Dusan Djordjevic followed with the game’s first three-pointer. Andersen heated up with a three to even the score at 11-11 and Green soon boosted the visitors to 14-18. Echenique remained a force inside for Ostend to keep it close. Ahmad Nivins came off the bench and scored a pair of baskets for ASVEL to take a 5-point lead. A Vladimir Mihailovic triple kept Ostend within 20-24 through 10 minutes. Berggren completed a basket-plus-foul and Ponitka put Ostend in front from the line. Ponitka soon added a pair of threes for a 33-28 Ostend advantage. Jackson scored on consecutive ASVEL possessions and Green’s free throws tied the game at 35-35, however Ostend went back on top after threes from Guy Muya and Djordjevic. Andersen took charge and lifted ASVEL to 41-43 with a hook shot, but an Echenique block at one end led to a Prince layup at the other and a 43-43 halftime score.

Sy scored three straight baskets and then assisted Green on a triple as ASVEL stunned Ostend to take over at 45-52. The lead hit 9 on Green’s fourth triple of the game. Sy scored on the offensive glass to make it 47-58. Prince and Berggren kept Ostend in the game and together trimmed the gap to 5. Sy regained the momentum for ASVEL, but Ponitka’s three-point play kept Ostend within 56-62 through three quarters. Wes Wilkinson and Ponitka each brought Ostend within 3, but Sy and co. had an answer each time. Jackson scored on a three-on-one break, tacked on a three and iced the outcome with 4 free throws as ASVEL pulled away late for a crucial victory.

"I am not disappointed because we played against a better team. If we want to compete against a team like this, we have to be focused for more than 40 minutes. If you see that they beat Barcelona and Zagreb in preparation, you know this is a high-level team. The only point I am a little disappointed is about our turnovers. They executed very well on our turnovers."
VINCENT, PIERRE
ASVEL Lyon Villeurbanne
"We played a very good defensive game. We focused well on their offensive game and their key players. We defended well on their pick-and-rolls. We knew they have a lot of offensive options, but we were able to stop that very good. We played with good energy and had some good offensive luck. It is very positive for French basketball to be certain of having one French team in the final."
