Keith Simmons - Banvit (photo lokobasket.com)Banvit Bandirma downed CEZ Basketball Nymburk 78-87 at Siemens Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania, on Wednesday evening to advance to the second stage of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Qualifying Rounds. Keith Simmons led a strong three-point attack by going 3 for 3 from downtown and E.J. Rowland dished 13 assists to pace Banvit, which advances to play Telenet Ostende of Belgium on Thursday. The game was close early before six Banvit players had a hand in a 0-14 second-quarter run, from which Nymburk never fully recovered. Simmons finished with 16 points, while Rowland tallied 9 points and 3 steals to go with his dishes. Sammy Mejia added 14 points and Chuck Davis 10 for the winners. Tre Simmons starred for Nymburk with 27 points on near-perfect shooting plus 7 assists, while Rasid Mahalbasic netted 15 points and Rado Rancik 12. The loss means that Nymburk will continue its European campaign with season in the Eurocup.

Tre Simmons drove and fed Mahalbasic for the game’s first points before Rowland countered with a three for his team’s first points. The Czech champs jumped ahead 10-5 on the strength of big men Rancik and Mahalbasic, but after an Ermal Kuqo triple, Simmons evened the score at 12-12. Tre Simmons heated up, however Banvit stayed close. Mejia’s steal and three-point play and Rowland’s lob to Drew Gordon for an alley-oop slam provided some exciting highlights. Gordon added an acrobatic layup in the final minute of the first quarter to push Banvit ahead 24-26 at the end of the quarter. Nymburk regained the lead early in the second quarter, but Banvit responded quickly as it reeled off 14 straight points. Six different players scored in the run, which saw Erkan Veyseloglu play a big role with 4 points and 2 assists as Banvit went up 28-40. The lead eventually swelled to 30-44 on Veyseloglu’s next basket. Klemen Prepelic tacked on a triple to make it 33-49. Nymburk clawed its way back on a Rancik triple and a Tre Simmons steal that led to a Vojtech Hruban slam to cut the deficit to 9. A second Prepelic three left Banvit up 40-52 at halftime.

After a slow start to the second half, a pair of Mahalbasic buckets drew Nymburk within 8. Mejia responded with a pair of scores for Banvit and soon Keith Simmons connected with his second three of the game to put his team comfortable ahead 48-61. Dylan Page responded with a triple for Nymburk, but Banvit kept finding the bottom of the net as Keith Simmons scored 5 more points off a pair of Rowland assists. Lukas Palyza’s triple carried Nymburk within 58-70 through three quarters. Banvit continued to have an answer for nearly every Nymburk bucket into the fourth quarter. A Tre Simmons three made it 63-74, but baskets by Mejia and a Cevher Ozer triple helped wrap the game up with time to spare. Tre Simmons continued to try to will Nymburk until the very end, however even his top efforts were not enough. A Davis slam with 75 seconds to go proved to be the icing on the cake as Banvit cruised to an important win.
