THE TAKE

One of the fastest rising teams in European basketball takes on a Euroleague classic on Thursday when Dynamo welcomes Efes Pilsen to Moscow for a Group A showdown. Both teams are tied in the Group A standings with 3-3 records, so it is needless to say that the winner will take a big step towards reaching the Top 16. Both teams happen to have the same profile, trying to slow down the tempo and looking for good options on offense while relying on strong defense to win games. Dynamo is not one of the best rebounding teams in the competition, but things could actually change this week since center Lazaros Papadopoulos (9.5 ppg., 8 rpg.) is expected to be back after missing four Euroleague games due to an injury. While Papadopoulos was out, power forward Antonios Fotsis (14.7 ppg., 5.8 rpg.) took care of business, leading the team in points and rebounds, while the arrival of Obinna Ekezie added more power and experience under the rims. The whole Dynamo frontcourt faces a big challenge because Efes has one of the deepest, more talented batteries of big men in the competition, featuring Marcus Haislip (11.2 ppg., 5.8 rpg.), Ermal Kuqo (7.8 ppg.), rebounding ace Kerem Gonlum (5.3 rpg.) and low post master Niksa Prkacin (6 ppg.). Travis Hansen (11.3 ppg.) is ready to lead Dynamo's backcourt along with playmakers Bojan Popovic (10 ppg.) and Eddie Gill (6.2 ppg.), as well as swingmen Dmitry Domani (7.7 ppg.) and Sergey Monya (3.2 ppg.). Hansen and Popovic will try to shine against two of the best scoring machines around, Drew Nicholas (13.8 ppg., 45.9% 3FG) and Horace Jenkins (8.3 ppg.). Nicholas fired in 7 three-pointers in his team's home loss against Climamio last week. Meanwhile, Monya will go against another young, up-and-coming small forward, Cenk Akyol (10.3 ppg., 44% 3FG). If Nicholas and playmaker Cuneyt Erden (9 ppg., 44% 3FG) set the game tempo, Efes will have more chances to win the game. Dynamo will run its offense through Papadopoulos and Fotsis, who will try to outpower the whole Efes frongcourt. Expect nothing short of a physical, exciting game which will go down to the wire in Krilatskoe Arena.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
"We play against a very experience team with an experienced coach, and we will need great concentration during the whole match. I am a little surprised with the oscillations in play of Efes: they beat Olympiacos and lost some other game at home, but in another way, this shows the quality of the competition. We still have some problems with injured players, as Andrey Trushkin and Andrey Ivanov are still out of the team. Miroslav Raicevic finally started to work with the team, but he also not will be ready for this game. The positive thing is the fact that Lazaros Papadopoulos is back and that we have another center, Obinna Ekezie, but we are now in some kind of transitions because we played one month without a classic center and now we have two and we must to learn to play with them. Efes Pilsen is very dangerous team, with capacity to play different ways. One game, their play is based on the pivots, Prkacin and Kuqo, and the next they can score 11 three-points shots. We need good control, pressure on the ball and patience. It's a very important game for both teams."
MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
"Dynamo Moscow proved how they are a good and serious team with their record in the ULEB Cup last season and also with the results they have this season in our group. It's going to be another tough game for us on the road. We will try to rely on our regular game, try to be tough defensively, to be motivated and to play for the win with all our aim."

Players

KHVOSTOV, DIMITRIY
Dynamo Moscow
"This is my first season in the Euroleague and I am very happy with the opportunity to play some minutes against teams and players who I watched last season only on TV. Dynamo is for the first time in the Euroleague while Efes is a veteran of this competition, but in our first six games, especially on our court, we showed that we can play against each team, so I am an optimist. If we win, it will be an important step closer to our target, which is to play in the Top 16."
ABI, MUSTAFA
Efes Pilsen
"We are having ups and downs since the beginning of the season and still trying to find our way to stability. We had a perfect day against Olympiacos and than see the hell against Climamio Bologna. This is going to be a very tough game for us against Dynamo Moscow because they have the home advantage. We will try to play as aggressive as we can and try to be very carefully and patient on offense. Those two things are most important and the basic things needed for a possible win away. But of course, we have to add some talent, too."
Lazaros Papadopoulos - Dynamo Moscow Lazaros Papadopoulos returned to action and didn't skip a beat, scoring 20 points and grabbing 7 rebounds to lead Dynamo Moscow to a 90-83 win over Efes Pilsen on Thursday night in the Russian capital. Dynamo won its fourth straight game at Krylatskoe Arena and improved to 4-3 in Group A, moving past Efes Pilsen for third place. Efes lost for the second week in a row to fall to 3-4. Dynamo led from start to finish, constantly controlling the game, even though it never led by more than 12. Papadopoulos, who had missed a month through injury, was a force in the paint for the hosts, making 7-of-10 two-pointers and drawing 9 fouls in 25 minutes. Bojan Popovic added 16 and Travis Hansen 15 for Moscow, while Eddie Gill came off the bench for 11. Ermal Kuqo led Efes with 18 points on 8-of-10 from the field. Horace Jenkins and Marcus Haislip had 17 each, though Jenkins also committed 7 turnovers. Drew Nicholas added 15 points and 7 assists, while Cenk Akyol had 10 rebounds.

Dynamo controlled the opening tip and went right to work via Papadopoulos, who set Hansen up for the game-opening layup, grabbed a rebound on the other end, and then scored inside to put the hosts up 4-0. Cuneyt Erden put Efes on the board with a three, but Antonios Fotsis erased it from downtown and Dimitri Domani added a layup for a 9-3 start. Kuqo went to work inside, scoring his teams next 8 points, but Dynamo matched each basket to maintain a 15-11 lead. Three Papadopoulos free throws and two more from Popovic gave Moscow a 9-point advantage before Jenkins drilled a triple and Nikola Prkacin scored inside to narrow the gap to 22-18. However another Papadopoulos basket followed by a Hansen triple made it 27-18 after 10 minutes.

Ermal Kuqo - Efes PilsenDynamo made its first three substitutions between the first and second periods, but continued to dominate. Obinna Ekezie's first touch produced 2 points and gave the hosts their first double-digit lead. Sergey Monya added free throws and then canceled Nicholas's three to keep Dynamo ahead 34-23. Back-to-back threes by Erden and Nicholas brought Efes within 5, but Gill stepped up from downtown for Dynamo and later added two free throws during a 7-0 spurt that gave the hosts a 41-29 advantage. Efes came right back through jumpers from Kuqo and Haislip and then a three-point play from Jenkins for a 0-7 run. Hansen's slam ended the run, but Kurqo scored the last basket of the period to keep his team within 45-40 at halftime.

Papadopoulos made his presence felt again at the start of the second half with back-to-back baskets, but Nicholas fired in a three to show that Efes was going to fight. Haislip and Prkacin scored to close the gap to 51-47, but Papadopoulos and Gill from downtown upped the Dynamo lead to 9. Another Gill triple made it 62-52 as the hosts started to coast. However Efes never quit and free throws by Jenkins and a Haislip three made it 65-59, only to see Popovic from the line and Papadopoulos increase Moscow's lead to 10. Haislip capped the third quarter with a layup that made it 69-61.

Haislip drilled a triple in the first minute of the fourth quarter to bring Efes within 70-64. Popovic's slam caused Efes to call timeout, after which Nicholas found Haislip far another three to cut the gap to 5. However a quick push by Popovic, who sandwiched a Nicholas basket with free throws and a jumper, took Dynamo back to a 10-point lead. A Hansen jumper made it 83-71, before Kuqo and Jenkins cut the deficit back to 8. However Efes couldn't piece together a run, as every time it stopped Dynamo, it failed to score and when it did score, Hansen and co. were there to match. Efes continued to fight, but it was to no avail as Dynamo won to remain perfect at home this season.

Head Coaches

IVKOVIC, DUSAN
Dynamo Moscow
"We played well, despite some problems caused by new players – the newcomer Ekezie and Papadopoulos, who finally recovered from his injury. It forced us to make some tactical changes. Efes Pilsen scored 7 from 11 three-pointers against Climamio. It was a big task to stop them. But we did it: the great sniper Drew Nicholas made only 3 of 9. Lazaros Papadopoulos helped us a lot both on defense and offense. He played 25 minutes after serious injury and made many important shots and collected rebounds."
MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
"I want to congratulate Dynamo for the win. I think it was a good game for the supporters – with a lot of points scored by both teams – but not for coaches. Dynamo ran away as we fell into foul trouble. We couldn't overtake them."

Players

PAPADOPOULOS, LAZAROS
Dynamo Moscow
"We played team basketball, with good defense. We stopped their shooters. I can distinguish Domani, Fotsis and Hansen on our squad, but it doesn't make any sense - the most important thing is that we were a team, not a group of players. Efes Pilsen's centers - Haislip and Kuqo - were difficult to stop. They are tough and can really score, but we managed to handle them."
PRKACIN, NIKOLA
Efes Pilsen
"We played really bad defense in the first half. Then we did a better job, but they didn't give us an opportunity to catch them. We made some not too clever decisions, but it was hard for our backcourt to use the big men to full advantage because of their fouls."
