The Take

A rare first-time meeting in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague features Olympiacos Piraeus (6-4) going against visiting Unics Kazan (3-7) on Friday of Round 11 at Peace And Friendship Stadium. Both teams are coming off victories last week and bring stellar individual talent to the contest. The hosts start with their veteran duo of leaders, Vassilis Spanoulis, who’s scoring 15.2 points on average, seventh-best in the league, and dishing 6.9 assists, third-best. Georgios Printezis follows him with 12.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. But they have plenty of accomplices, with Khem Birch ranking seventh with 7.0 rebounds and joint fifth with 1.3 blocks on average. Matt Lojeski is scoring 9.9 points per game after scoring 15 in each of the last two. For the disparity in their records, these teams are surprisingly even in most statistical categories except on defense, where Olympiacos does better in both points allowed (77.0 to 83.1) and two-point defense (44.5% to 52.7%). That defense will be focused on the EuroLeague's top scorer, Keith Langford, who averages 23.2 points and has 22 or more in eight of the first 10 games. He also gets to the free throw line far more than any other player in the competition and makes those shots count (61 of 71, 85.9%). Artsiom Parakhouski puts up 12.2 points and 6.2 rebounds on average while also leading the EuroLeague in blocks with 1.7 per game. Quino Colom spearheads the Unics attack with 9.4 points and 5.4 assists per game. And last week Unics found extra help from shooter Vadim Panin with a career-high 18 points, including 4 three-pointers. Unics cannot be taken lightly on the road after beating Fenerbahce in Istanbul earlier this season, so expect Olympiacos to be aggressive in trying to dictate the tempo and take the ball out of Langford's hands as much as possible on Friday.

Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
Unics Kazan
"Olympiaсos is a team with character. We remember that even when they were losing, they were able to win the titles. Probably, their roster is not full of stars, but Vassilis Spanoulis and Georgios Printezis push the team forward. Especially in the tough moments they control the game well and the rhythm, play pick-and-rolls in the central corridor. They don't play shoot and run, and they try to slow down the game. There are the shooters: Erick Green, Matt Lojeski. They spread the defense and under the basket they are very athletic and rebound very well. Our task is to be very attentive to the rebounds. As for our team, all our guys are ready, all will fight for the victory. The guys understand the responsibility; every game it is a small final, every point is made of gold, and if you win, you will move up in the standings."

"Olympiaсos is obviously a legendary team. It's going to be hard because all EuroLeague games are hard, and especially away games. So we'll just come to fight, try to do our best. Everybody knows that Vassilis Spanoulis is dangerous, but basketball is a team game and we will try to stop him."
