The Take

Two former Euroleague champions meet again, in what has become a classic showdown in the competition. Barcelona ranks second in performance index ranking (102.3) and has committed the fewest turnovers in the competition (10.3 per game). Coach Xavi Pascual’s men are also among the leaders in three-pointers made (second, 9.7 per game), two-point shooting (fourth, 54.6%) and fouls committed (16.1). Panathinaikos ranks third in assists (20 apg.), mainly because of its two elite pass-first playmakers, Dimitris Diamantidis and Nick Calathes, who will run to control the game tempo at all times. Tomas Satoransky and Carlos Arroyo must step up against them to allow Barcelona to play at the right rhythm. Powering the offensive glass will be a big key for Panathinaikos, as despite having good rebounders like Miroslav Raduljica, Ognjen Kuzmic and James Gist, the Greens rank last in offensive boards (8.3 orpg.). Raduljica and Kuzmic must go against star center Ante Tomic in a key matchup. If Shane Lawal remains sidelined, Samardo Samuels and Justin Doellman will see extended playing time around the baskets for the visitors. Nikos Pappas may be back in action to help Vladimir Jankovic, Sasha Pavlovic and James Feldeine at the wings. Barcelona has a battery of tough defenders - Pau Ribas, Stratos Perperoglou, Brad Oleson - and sharp shooters - Alex Abrines, Juan Carlos Navarro - ready to play a big role in this exciting game.

Game Notes

Panathinaikos Athens

James Gist needs 2 more three-pointers to reach the century mark for his Euroleague career.

Gist has recorded at least 1 steal in nine of his last 10 Euroleague appearances.

Dimitris Diamantidis established his Euroleague career high in scoring with 26 points in Game 1 of the 2011 Euroleague Playoffs in Barcelona. Diamantidis missed the final shot as Barcelona held on for an 83-82 victory.

Two weeks ago, Diamantidis passed former teammate and four-time Euroleague champ Sarunas Jasikevicius for eighth place on the Euroleague career scoring charts. He now has 2,347 career points. Next he can pass retired CSKA great J.R. Holden (seventh; 2,388 points).

Antonis Fotsis is 6 blocked shots away from reaching the century mark for his Euroleague career.

Nikos Pappas has scored in double figures and made at least 1 three-pointer in each of his last five Euroleague appearances.

James Feldeine has scored at least 10 points and made at least 1 three-pointer in each of his last five Euroleague games.

Feldeine was a teammate of Barcelona center Moussa Diagne during the 2013-14 season with Spanish side Montakit Fuenlabrada.

FC Barcelona Lassa

Barcelona’s 72 turnovers (10.3 per game) are the fewest in the league through Round 7.

Barcelona has won its last nine games against Panathinaikos and 23 of the 35 meetings between the clubs.

Stratos Perperoglou played his first five Euroleague seasons with Panathinaikos between 2007 and 2012. He helped the Greens to the 2009 and 2011 Euroleague crowns and also won four Greek League and three Greek Cup titles with the club. He was also a teammate of current Panathinaikos players Nick Calathes, Dimitris Diamantidis and Antonis Fotsis.

Perperoglou and Calathes have also teamed up on the Greek national team, including most recently at EuroBasket 2015 over the summer.

Justin Doellman scored a Euroleague career-high 21 points last season to lead Barca to a 77-81 Top 16 victory over Panathinaikos in Athens. Juan Carlos Navarro chipped in a season-best 17.

Doellman has made 19 consecutive free throws in Euroleague action.

Shane Lawal has blocked at least 1 shot in 13 of his last 14 Euroleague games.

Juan Carlos Navarro is tied with his former Spanish national teammate Jorge Garbajosa for sixth place all-time on the Euroleague’s all-time steals charts with 224 career steals.

Ante Tomic has scored in double figures in each of his last five Euroleague games.

Tomic did not miss a shot in totaling 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Barcelona to a 78-69 victory over Panathinaikos last November.

Carlos Arroyo was a teammate of Panathinaikos guard Sasha Pavlovic during the 20013-04 NBA season in Utah.

Tomas Satoransky has recorded at least 1 steal in four straight and eight of his last nine games.
