THE TAKE

All eyes will be on Gdansk, Poland, as the 2007-08 Euroleague regular season opens on Monday with Prokom Trefl Sopot hosting CSKA Moscow at 20:15 CET. Both teams had busy offseasons, with Prokom rebuilding much of its squad, while CSKA tinkered to find a recipe to win back the Euroleague title. The common link between both teams is shot-blocking center Tomas Van den Spiegel, who left the cozy confines of CSKA to lead the re-fashioned Prokom defense. The opening game could serve to answer several outstanding questions as these teams prepare for another exciting season of Euroleague Basketball. With CSKA, it will be interesting to see how the team chemistry develops with newcomers Ramunas Siskauskas, Nikos Zisis and Marcus Goree added to an already-potent lineup The same chemistry theme will be watched by Prokom, which in addition to Van den Spiegel added last season's ULEB Cup MVP Milan Gurovic, veteran point man Travis Best and talented guard DaJuan Wagner, who is trying to come back from long-term injury. Van den Spiegel is not Sopot's only new player familiar with the CSKA. Another center, Olympic gold medalist Ruben Wolkowyski, spent half a season with CSKA a few years back and played in Moscow for rival Khimki the last three seasons. That Prokom duo will face freshly crowned European champ Alexey Savrasenko and David Andersen in the paint. Head coaches Ettore Messina of CSKA and Eugeniusz Kijewski of Prokom will have the opportunity to try some more interesting tactical matchups at several positions. Prokom brings a deep guard rotation featuring Best, Wagner, Christos Harissis and Donatas Slanina against CSKA stars like Euroleague MVP Theo Papaloukas, Zisis, J.R. Holden and Zakhar Pashutin. At the forward positions, CSKA brings All-Euroleague selections Trajan Langdon and Matjaz Smodis as well as Siskauskas and Goree to go against Gurovic, Tomas Masiulis and Filip Dylewicz, whose athleticism and defensive skills could be crucial if Prokom fancies stopping the CSKA scorers. After winning the Euroleague and reaching the final in the past two seasons, CSKA is the favorite practically every time it takes the floor. But for the much-improved Prokom team, the opening game and all the attention surrounding it could be the ideal time and place to make a major statement for the future.

Quotes Head Coaches

KIJEWSKI, EUGENIUSZ
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"There are three points we must really focus on. First of all, the fight under the glass, where CSKA has big power; second, our defensive transition, because they are very dangerous team running the open court; and third, we need to play perfect defensively on the perimeter. This way, we will have a chance to take the win."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"It's going be a big game, first of all, as the opening game. All the spotlight in the Euroleague and all of European basketball will be on this one game. That's a big responsibility on Prokom and on us. And it will be excting to play in an opening game. We've been in the Final Four, the NBA Tour, the China Challenge, and now the opening game is another great opportunity to be part of a big Euroleague event. Prokom is a team full of talented players and great shooters. It will be most important for us to not let them get a rhythm going during the game. Shooters who get their rhythm score points, so we can't afford to let them do that."

Players

DYLEWICZ, FILIP
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"We have to first of all fight to try to win the game against one of the best teams all over the continent, and in my opinion defense will be the key. It won't be easy, but we'll try to start the season at our best to prove to ourselves and our fans that we can beat a top level team."
GUROVIC, MILAN
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"We have a very difficult job to do against CSKA, which is for sure the favorite to win the game, but I hope we'll play a great game and use all our chances to get the win. I don't want to talk about a key to winning the match: we'll see on the court what happens and we'll adapt our game."
SMODIS, MATJAZ
CSKA Moscow
"It is very important for us to start the Euroleague with a win. It is going to be the first tough test for our new team. And we know that it is hard to play Prokom."
PASHUTIN, ZAKHAR
CSKA Moscow
"It is an honor for CSKA to take part in one of the most important Euroleague events. We never had a chance to do it before. Our rival is a very tough team, but I hope we will be able to show some good basketball."
Matjaz Smodis - CSKA Moscow CSKA Moscow started the Euroleague season on a high note by downing Prokom Trefl 69-88 in Sopot in the competition's opening game in Sopot, Poland, on Monday night. CSKA confirmed its status as the team to beat in Group A, while despite the loss, Prokom showed at times, especially in the opening quarter, it could be one of the surprise teams to go deep in the competition. Matjaz Smodis scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half to lead the winners. Nikos Zisis, who dominated early, added 15, Ramunas Siskauskas had 13 and David Andersen 10 for CSKA. Milan Gurovic led Prokom with 25 points while Donatas Slanina and Dajuan Wagner each had 10 for the hosts. The game marked the start of the 2007-08 season, which Euroleague Basketball devotes to 50 Years of European Club Competitions. Legendary Polish referee Wieslaw Zych and former CSKA Moscow captain Sergei Panov were the stars in a brief pregame ceremony that marked the first official event of the season, which will continue in Athens on Wednesday. Prokom led 16-9 early, but Zisis had all the points in a 0-10 run that put CSKA ahead for good. Siskauskas fueled another run of 10 unanswered points that broke the game open, 32-45, at halftime. CSKA boosted its margin to 50-69 after 30 minutes and then again to 58-84 with four minutes to go before leaving the court with an outstanding road win.

J.R. Holden was first to score in the 2007-08 season with a five-meter jumper, as Prokom missed 3 consecutive shots until Wagner stepped up with a mid-range jumper. Prokom looked for Gurovic as often as possible against Siskauskas. He made free throws and then banked in a triple to give Prokom its first lead, 7-4, after four minutes. CSKA struggled to score and Thomas Van den Spiegel capped a 7-0 run with a fast break dunk. Smodis and Wagner traded layups for a 11-6 score, as Theo Papaloukas stepped on court. Andersen drilled a triple, but Gurovic answered from downtown and Wagner made free throws to keep Prokom ahead, 16-9. CSKA called a much-needed timeout but the guests had no answers in offense now. Van den Spiegel had a huge block on Papaloukas but CSKA finally found a go-to guy in Zisis, whose back-to-back layups brought the guests back to life, 16-12, after 10 minutes.

Donatas Slanina - Prokom TreflZisis kept pacing CSKA with a layup that stayed up on the rim for more than 5 seconds before falling in. The free throw that came with did and a three-pointer gave CSKA a 16-19 edge, after a 0-10 run in which he had all points. Gurovic and Papaloukas joined the three-point festival while Langdon nailed a step-back jumper for a 19-24 CSKA lead. Gurovic kept pacing Prokom with another basket but he didn't find much help. Meanwhile, Papaloukas buried a mid-range shot and Aleksey Savrasenko made free throws to keep the guests ahead, 23-28. Slanina shined with a fade-away jumper, which Savrasenko bettered with back-to-back layups. Prokom had already called timeout to adjust its offense. Slanina rescued the hosts with another jumper and Christos Harissis added one from downtown, as Prokom switched to a 2-3 zone defense. Zisis and Siskauskas punished it with respective triples in a 0-10 run that boosted the guests' lead to 30-42. A close jumper by Van den Spiegel, a free throw by Siskauskas and a floater from Holden fixed the halftime score at 32-45.

Gurovic tried to ignite a Prokom comeback with a jumper only to see Savrasenko match it with a smart move in the low post. Holden shined with a rainbow jumper allowing CSKA to keep a 13-point lead. Prokom now tried to power the offensive boards with Van den Spiegel and Tomas Masiulis on court, but CSKA found its groove on defense. Wagner took over with an off-balance reverse layup, as CSKA tried to slow down the tempo. Travis Best found his first points on a running jumper to give Prokom some hope at 40-49 after 24 minutes. Andersen hit a mid-range shot and then beat Masiulis one-on-one to keep CSKA ahead, 40-53. Prokom only managed to exchange baskets now, as Andersen nailed another three-pointer for a 42-57 CSKA margin. Prokom called timeout and Wagner stepped up with another incredible reverse layup, but CSKA kept dominating the game by going to the foul line often. Siskauskas made free throws and soon added a corner triple to give the guests another game-high lead, 44-62. Slanina and Siskauskas traded free throws before Papaloukas provided a highlight with a big dunk in traffic. Filip Dylewicz scored inside, but Smodis answered from downtown to boost the guests' lead to 50-69 after 30 minutes.

Nikolaos Zisis - CSKA MoscowSmodis grabbed a loose ball and put it in right at the start of the fourth quarter, as Gurovic stayed on fire with yet another basket. Prokom needed to improve its defense right away, but could not manage to improve its offense. Meanwhile, CSKA had started to slow down the tempo to keep its lead alive. Smodis buried a triple from his favorite spot at the top of the key to make it a 22-point game. Marcus Goree also scored from downtown and even when Slanina stepped up with a long two-pointer, Prokom could not manage to regain its momentum. Van den Spiegel dunked it, but Smodis answered in the same way. Papaloukas kept running the show on offense, keeping everyone involved, while CSKA kept doing what it does best: destroy opponents with its outstanding man-to-man defense. Langdon became the seventh player to score from downtown and soon added a long jumper to seal the outcome, 58-84. Everything was said and done already, and even though Prokom kept trying, CSKA had already cruised to a massive road win.

Head Coaches

KIJEWSKI, EUGENIUSZ
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"I have to say tonight we needed to do a few things better if we wanted to beat CSKA. They played perfectly from the beginning of the second quarter forward. They did it by starting from defense, and that led them to find easy and open shots on the fastbreak. They certainly showed themselves to be ready. We have a lot of work to do still to build our team and our game. We have to keep working and be confident because we lost against a great team that is certainly on a long road this season in the Euroleague."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"I was a little concerned both about this being the opening game and about Prokom, which tends to start well in the Euroleague each season. I was even more concerned after Prokom got off to a good start in this game. I have to thank all my players, who understood that the situation could become dangerous, for getting focused in a few minutes and playing tough defense the rest of the way. Once we got our defense going, we were able to move forward without forgetting about the tough defense that got us the lead."

Players

VAN DEN SPIEGEL, TOMAS
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"I played against my former team, but it didn't matter. I just wanted to win. We talked a lot before the game, how to play and the beginning was good. We played like we wanted to play, we passed a lot, had wide open shots. And then we lost control. When CSKA escaped for 10 points it was tough to come back because they are like a machine – play for 40 minutes at the same high level, without ups and downs. We have to realize that it wasn't the most important game for us in a battle for Top 16. The next ones are much more important and I count on victories."
WAGNER, DAJUAN
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"It was my first experience in the Euroleague, and it's tougher than I ever expected. CSKA played a great game, very tough, especially on defense after we had started well. We'll just have to keep working and improve after this first game, because everyone tells me this is one of the toughest teams. I know that I didn't expect as tough a game as this in my debut, but we saw some things we can work on to do better."
SISKAUSKAS, RAMUNAS
CSKA Moscow
"It's not my first trip to Sopot and I like to play here. For us every game is important, so it didn't matter that it was the opening one. We want to win every one. The final result may show that it was an easy victory, but we had a tough battle here. We started bad and we needed a big work to come back and take control."
ANDERSEN, DAVID
CSKA Moscow
"It was a tough game, I mean Prokom put up a good fight. We started to get our rhythm in the second half and started to play some good basketball. And that’s what we're here to do and we're hoping to continue this over the season. Now it’s just a matter of going to work and getting ready for the next game. The team is in good shape. Everybody's been playing basketball. Everybody is feeling ready to play. Now, like I said, we take it game by game and we have to concentrate on the next one."
LANGDON, TRAJAN
CSKA Moscow
"We knew they are a good team. We knew we had to come in here and play hard, they can really score the ball. I mean, we know we were deeper than them. Our thing for this year is just to come in here and play harder than them and I think we did a good job of that tonight. Just like we've been doing the past couple of years, defense is our key. Defensive is the key to our game. We play good defense and we're always going to have a chance to stay in the game. And that's what we wanted to do tonight. Our goal is to play our best basketball in March and April, so that’s what we're headed for. It was a good win for us today and we just need to continue to work."
