THE TAKE

Le Mans Sarthe Basket will look for its first win this season when it hosts Kenny Gregory and Efes Pilsen on Thursday in France. This will be Gregory’s first visit to Le Mans since leaving the club this summer to join Efes. Le Mans dropped is last two games on the road by 35 and 19 points, but all of its home games have been close encounters. Meanwhile Efes Pilsen is coming off a disappointing home loss to Maccabi Tel Aviv that ended a three-game winning streak, but still has plenty to play for. At 6-4, head coach David Blatt’s charges are only two wins off the group lead. Le Mans led by 11 heading into the fourth quarter when these teams met in Istanbul in November, but Drew Nicholas drilled 4 three-pointers in the fourth quarter to lead his team back to victory. However Efes will have a different look this time as Nicholas is first returning from an injury that sidelined him for nearly two weeks and Serkan Erdogan is out after knee surgery. The good news for the visitors is that playmaker Scoonie Penn has been red hot. Penn was named Week 10 MVP for his career-high 30-point performance last week. Penn is averaging 19.3 points on 83.3% two-point and 46.7% three-point shooting, 6 assists and 2.3 steals over his last three games. Penn will team with Rashad Wright, Ender Arslan and maybe even Nicholas to attack Le Mans’s young, but spunky backcourt featuring Raviv Limonad, Yannick Bokolo and Antoine Diot. At small forward, Nicolas Batum will display his athleticism and all-around skills against a fellow top athlete and former teammate in Gregory. Both teams bring deep frontcourts, with the hosts boasting the talents of Sam Clancy and Phil Ricci in the post, Alain Koffi on defense and Luka Bogdanovic from downtown, while Efes has Andre Hutson, Loren Woods, Ermal Kuqo and Kerem Gonlum to make noise inside. The visitors have won twice on the road already and all their games away from home have been decided by fewer than 10 points, a factor that could become big down the stretch, as Penn and co. have shown they have the experience to perform in close games. How well Limonad and Bokolo can do under the pressure to win for the first time could determine Le Mans’s chances.

Quotes Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"The last two Euroleague games were awful for us. We played badly and were punished by opponents each time. At home, we must absolutely react. Our crowd deserves to see other things than those we showed lately. We have to recover our defensive values and our pride, too. In Istanbul, we were close to them, we'll have to give more this time to obtain a chance to win this game."
BLATT, DAVID
Efes Pilsen
“After a very tough weekend both in the Euroleague and Turkish League, we will play against a very good team like Le Mans. They have very talented players who caused trouble for us in the first game in Istanbul. I think that they don’t deserve the place that they are now. And there’s no doubt that they will be trying to get their first win. After the accident we had last week against Maccabi, we are supposed to win this game. And we will go on fighting for the top of the group, like we have targeted since than the beginning of the season.”

LELOUP, JEREMY
Le Mans
"Concerning this game, we'll have to play again together, which we did at the beginning of the competition but we forgot this last couple of games. We have to recover the will to fight hard. To find again the desire to win that we lost since we understood our elimination in Euroleague. Last but not least,we have to face our crowd and reconquer it."
GREGORY, KENNY
Efes Pilsen
“It’s been a hard season so far and we are still trying to catch the team chemistry. We have got a few big steps for doing this but we still have so many to move towards. After losing Maccabi last week, we proved that we can do much beter in defence against Galatasaray Cafe Crown at the weekend. The thing we need to do is to repeat it in Euroleague, too. What we were missing in most of the games was tough defence. This is what we have to focus on seriously against Le Mans, too.”
Kenny Gregory - Efes Pilsen Efes Pilsen stormed back from a 17-point second-half deficit to deny Le Mans Sarthe Basket its first win of the season on Thursday night. Efes, which trailed 74-61 after three periods, held Le Mans to just 6 points in the fourth quarter and 4 in the overtime period to wrap up an 84-91 road win. Efes improved to 7-4 in the Group B standings and inched closer to a spot in the Top 16. Head coach David Blatt’s charges will clinch their ticket to the next stage with another win or a Cibona Zagreb loss in any of the remaining games this season. Kenny Gregory paced Le Mans with 19 points against his former club, while center Loren Woods erupted for 16 points and 18 rebounds – both season-highs – to lead the visitors. Woods was the main reason Efes won the battle on the glass 26-44. Le Mans led for most of the night, taking a double-digit advantage by the end of the first period, increasing it to 51-40 at halftime and reaching 74-57 late in the third. But Efes awoke in time, shut down the Le Mans attack and nearly won the game at the end of regulation before Scoonie Penn missed a layup with 5 seconds left. Even though Le Mans scored the first two baskets of the overtime period, they would also be their last as Efes dominated with 10 unanswered points to seal the victory. Penn, playing 39 minutes since Efes still without injured guard Drew Nicholas, scored 18 points, Rashad Wright added 14 and Ermal Kuqo had 11. Nebojsa Bogavac led Le Mans with 20 points, Sam Clancy added 18 points and 7 rebounds, Alain Koffi scored 15 and grabbed 7 boards and Yannick Bokolo scored 11 and dished 11 assists in defeat.

Le Mans started strong, taking a 9-2 lead just two-and-a-half minutes in on a Bokolo triple. Gregory answered with a three-pointer to get the visitors back within 11-7, but Le Mans remained in control and continued to increase the lead minute by minute. Clancy’s layup soon doubled the difference at 18-9 and Bogavac hit his second triple in three minutes for the biggest lead of the first quarter, 23-9. An Ender Arslan three-pointer and Penn’s layup late in the quarter helped Efes cut the difference to 10 points at the end of the period, 26-16.

Sam Clancy - Le MansEfes found its offensive touch at the beginning of the second period. Woods’s free throws made it 27-24 and a little later the center reduced the gap to a single point with a layup to complete at 3-10 spurt. But Le Mans didn’t let Efes take over, controlling the game through Koffi inside and Bogovac outside. A Koffi layup made it 37-31 midway through the period, but Wright kept Efes in the game. His skillful layup over Sam Clancy plus a free throw made it 37–36. Kofi and Bogovac paired once again on an 8-0 run to pump up the lead to 45-36. Bokolo soon fed Koffi for a nice dunk and Bogavac picked Arslan’s pocket and went in for a layup to increase the lead to 13 points. Wright’s free throws ended the first half with the hosts up 51-40.

It was the same scene also in the third quarter as the home team stayed aggressive on defense and kept shooting at high percentages both inside and outside. Clancy worked well on Woods to keep the difference the same. Clancy added another layup over Woods to make it 68-55. Then Luka Bogdanovic drilled 2 three-pointers to give Le Mans its biggest lead, 74-57. Efes scored 4 points to end the third quarter down 74-61.

Efes started the last period very aggressive on defense and at the same time got 3 straight three pointers by Penn and Kuqo to level the game once again. Kuqo added another layup to get his team within 76-72. Koffi scored for the hosts, but then Efes posted the next 8 points through Penn, Woods and Gregory to take the lead for the first time since than the start of the game. Woods dished to Penn for a layup to make it 78-80. Both teams played the rest of the regular time under big pressure. Bokolo made a skillful layup with 95 seconds remaining to tie the game at 80-80. Penn missed a layup with 5 seconds left that could have won the game.

Early in overtime, Nicolas Batum stole the ball from Andre Hutson and gave the lead to Le Mans once again. Clancy added a layup to give Le Mans more hope at 84-81, but then Efes reeled off 10 unanswered points to seal the victory with an 84-91 final score.

Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"They made three big three-point shots in the first minutes of the last quarter, and that was very hard for us. We played a huge game in terms of intensity and quality. We played well. In the end, I think that the best team didn't win tonight. We can't fight more that we did tonight."
BLATT, DAVID
Efes Pilsen
"First of all I found that Le Mans played good basketball during 32 minutes. They played one of their best games tonight. We played a tough game. We didn't defend well in the first period. At the end, we made good plays to win the game."
