THE TAKE

ULEB Cup debutant Siauliai has worked its way through the ranks and solidified itself clearly as the third-best team in Lithuania. That trend has continued as Robertas Kuncaitis's team opened this season with a good start at home. Always a club that relies on local talent, Donatas Zavackas leads a strong group of local players alongside Antonio Grant and Jose Olivero. Siauliai opens its Group A campaign at home against rising Turkish power Turk Telekom, who is making its second ULEB Cup appearance. The Ankara side is still undefeated domestically and coming off a strong 2006-07 season, which saw it lose to Efes Pilsen in the semifinals and reach the quarterfinals of the FIBA EuroCup. This season, Ercument Sunter's team must be considered at least a darkhorse title contender with the likes of veteran Khalid El-Amin, inside force Erwin Dudley, Michael Wright and Chris Williams.

The opener between Siauliai and Turk Telekom fell on the side of the guests as the Turkish team escaped Lithuania with a 90-97 win. Michael Wright had an astonishing performance with 37 points and 10 rebounds, Khalid El-Amin added 25. For the hosts, Aurimas Kieza led the way with 19 points, Antonio Grant added 17, Gediminas Maceina 17 and Jose Olivero 13. The game was close until the first half but in the third quarter, Wright and El-Amin fueled Turk Telekom to double digit leads that were enough for the guests to escape with the win.

Aurimas Kieza scored Siauliai's first ULEB Cup basket ever and Antonio Grant boosted the hosts to a 10-4 lead as Michael Wright tried to maintain Turk Telekom in the game with 6 points of his own. Gediminas Maceina and Wright maintained a scoring battle of their own to bring the game down to a 24-24 tie after 10 minutes. Four threes by Kieza, Jose Olivero and Tomas Rinkevicius, two himself, maintained Siauliai ahead in the second period at 41-35. Finally, Khalid El-Amin hit a basket plus foul situation to leave the scoreboard with a 49-47 after 20 minutes. A three by Tutku Acik put Turk Telekom ahead to start the third period and El-Amin did the same to make it a 10-point game, 53-63 as the difference was maintained until the end of the third quarter despites Siauliai's efforts to come back. In the last period, Kieza and Grant scored 6 straight points to make it 78-81 and after El-Amin's miss, Kieza blasted a new three to tie the game at 83-83 with 4 minutes to go. However, El-Amin and Haluk Yildrim blasted three straight threes for 85-93. Siauliai had its last chance but the guests maintained the difference until the end to take the first road win, 90-97.

According to the statistics nobody in European basketball can do that. Our team played quite well but at the end of the game the experience of the players played its major role."
