THE TAKE

Asvel Basket can book its spot in the elimination round with a victory at home over ASCO Slask Wroclaw in Group G. Head coach Yves Baratet's Asvel dropped to 5-3 last week by losing at home to Panionios. The French team shot 53% from the floor, but Panionios forced 18 Asvel turnovers. Small forward Lamaye Wilson poured in 21 points while center Uchenna Nsomwu collected 19 points and 7 rebounds and shooting guard Robert Conley had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. But Baratet's troops came up just short in the end. Asvel however will be looking for revenge after losing on the road against Slask in Week 4, when Baratet's team committed 20 turnovers. ASCO Slask Wroclaw, for its part, still can grab a top three spot. Bit it didn't help that head coach Rimas Kurtinaitis's team lost on the road at previously winless Ludwigsburg to fall to 4-4 - one game behind both Asvel and Panionios. Kurtinaitis's Polish team out-shot Ludwigsburg 48%-45% and forced 20 Ludwigsburg turnovers. But Slask lost the rebounding battle 35-23 and turned the ball over 21 times. Playmaker Dawan Robinson led the way with 17 points while center Jared Homan added 16 points and reserve power forward Oliver Stevic chipped in 13 points and 6 rebounds. But Kurtinaitis's team managed just 3 assists in the game. Slask's ball-handling must improve it is wants to stay in the running for the elimination round.

Asvel Basket made it to the ULEB Cup elimination rounds on Tuesday night thanks to a Group G home win against ASCO Slask Wroclaw by 84-72. The win improves Asvel's record to 6-3, making it imposisble for the French team to be worse than fifth at the end of the regular season. On the other hand, Slask dropped to 4-5 but still has options to fight for a second round berth. Robert Conly and Lamayne Wilson had 22 points apiece to lead Asvel Basket to the win. Uchenna Nsomwu added 13. For Slask, Torrell Martin had 23 points with 4 of 5 triples and Dawan Robinson added 15.

Asvel's defense was the big protagonist in the first quarter. The hosts shut the Slask offense completely and soon the score was 15-7 after Yohann Sangare's triple, which became 17-9 after 10 minutes. Things were different however in the second period. A 0-7 burst by Slask capped by Dawan Robinson's three-point play allowed the guests to pull within 20-18 and later Oliver Stevic tied the game at 22-22. Four straight points by Robert Conley kept Asvel going but two straight threes by Torrell Martin allowed Slask to stay at one point, 34-33 and finally Rashid Atkins scored to tie the game again, 35-35, at the break. BUt the third quarter arrived and with it, a new storm by Asvel who blasted the guests with a 12-4 run to quickly climb to a 47-39 edge. Slask reacted with a few playes, but the offensive accuracy of the hosts was unstoppable as four triple fell in key moments, the last one by Laurent Foirest to close the third period at 67-49. The last period started with 4 straight points by Atkins and Slask seemed to recover, but Asvel played to maintain the double-digit lead on the scoreboard, and succeeded as Conley and Lamayne Wilson appeared with key threes that stopped Slask's progression. Martin was still trying to put Slask back into the game in the last minute but that was all he could do as Asvel escaped with the win.
