THE TAKE

An already important showdown in the battle to make it to the Quarterfinals in Group L takes place in the Canary Islands, Spain, where Gran Canaria 2014 welcomes Czech League perennial champion CEZ Basketball Nymburk on Tuesday at 21:30 CET. Both teams tie for second place in Group L, each with a 1-1 record. Gran Canaria is undefeated at home so far in this Eurocup season but Nymburk has registered back-to-back road wins, the last one in overtime against Turk Telekom last week. Above all, Gran Canaria must stop Nymburk playmaker Arthur Lee, who runs his team's offense. He is set to share playing time with point guard Mike Lenzly, as coach Muli Katzurin plays them both very often. Marcus Norris is ready for the challenge due to his experience and intensity. Meanwhile, Lenzly will see playing time against Tomas Bellas. Jaycee Carroll in Gran Canaria's main offensive weapon due to his quick release, unlimited range and driving skills. Carroll faces a critical matchup against scoring ace Ron Lewis. Both teams are really deep at both wings, as Nymburk can offer good shooters like Ladislav Sokolovsky or Michal Kremen, off-guard Pavel Slezak or up-and-coming Pavel Pumprla, who comes off a career-best performance against Telekom. Gran Canaria coach Pedro Martinez relies on Jim Moran to use his defensive skills against Lewis. Gran Canaria can improve its intensity with Josh Fisher or find another scoring option in Melvin Sanders. The hosts may have an advantage under the baskets, as Gran Canaria can play strong inside with Will McDonald, Sitapha Savane or James Augustine, three very good rebounders full of intensity and power. Gran Canaria can also Daniel Kickert at power forward to open the floor with his three-point shots. Savane faces an interesting battle against Last 16 Game 2 MVP Phil Ricci. Petr Benda hopes to use his mid-range shots and poise against McDonald and Augustine, while Nymburk relies on Radek Necas to power the offensive board. Nymburk must get Lee and Lewis involved and try to set a slow game tempo. Gran Canaria must get its big men involved and expect a good game from Carroll and Sanders. Expect a very interesting game in Gran Canaria this Tuesday.

KATZURIN, MULI
CEZ Nymburk
"Gran Canaria is a very strong team at home. We were watching them not only on DVD but also a live game and we saw that they are a very organised team, they have excellent outside shooting and great offensive rebound. They play with a lot of confidence at home and we need to find the way to make them play in our style. If we do not it will be very tough for us. But as we learned before in the Eurocup - nothing is impossible for us. Of course Gran Canaria are favorites since they play home, but I believe every home team is favorite on its court."

"Eurocup is not a Czech League. Gran Canaria is somewhere in the middle of the Spanish League and proved to be very strong at home. I think that a very tough game is expected, but that is what was expected in the Last 16. Our goal is to win or to make the best possible result. Every point can be important at the end of the day."
Jaycee Carroll - Gran Canaria 2014 (photo cbgrancanaria.net)Gran Canaria remained undefeated at home this season after holding off a late CEZ Basketball Nymburk charge for a 69-54 victory. Granca improved to 2-1 in Group L, while dropping Nymburk to 1-2. The two clubs face each other in a pivotal rematch in the Czech Republic in two weeks, where not only the outcome, but potentially the margin of victory could play a major role in the race for the quarterfinals. Jaycee Carroll was the hero with 13 of his game-high 22 points in the first quarter. The hosts started on first with the game’s first 12 points, but Nymburk clawed back to 20-18 after 10 minutes. Again Gran Canaria surged and went ahead 52-28 on a Marcus Norris three-pointer early in the third quarter. But Nymburk rallied again to close the gap to 58-54 in the fourth quarter before Will McDonald, Carroll and Sitapha Savane scored crucial baskets to seal the win for the home side. Carroll also had 8 rebounds, while McDonald finished with 12 points and 7 boards for the winners. Mike Lenzly paced Nymburk with 15 points and Arthur Lee and Ladislav Sokolovsky added 11 each.

Gran Canaria got off to the ultimate start on both ends of the floor. Savane scored on the first possession and then Norris drew an offensive foul from Petr Benda. Carroll sank a three-pointer and then stole the ball from Lee and set up James Augustine for a basket. Carroll added a layup and triple to make it 12-0 before Phil Ricci finally broke the ice with a basket-and-foul for Nymburk. However the visitors did not waste time in regrouping. Despite another triple from Carroll, free throws from Ron Lewis and baskets from Benda and Pavel Pumprla brough the visitors back. Another Carroll basket was trumped by a Lee three to make it 17-12. Pumprla continued his good form with two more baskets before Lee sank a pair of free throws to make it 20-18 after 10 minutes. Granca went inside to McDonald who scored twice to restore control to the hosts as the second quarter began. Norris stretched the difference to 9 with a three-pointer, but was quickly matched by Lenzly, who also drew a foul and sank the free throw. But Tomas Bellas drained a triple and found Savane for a three-point play to push the lead to a new high, 13 points. Lee’s steal and basket was unable to swing the momentum back to Nymburk as Carroll scored and the Granca defense remained tough. Jim Moran further increased the lead, first from the line and then from downtown, as Gran Canaria took a commanding 42-25 halftime advantage.

Carroll remained hot as the second half got underway, pacing his team as it grew it lead even bigger. Carroll started off with a layup, which Sokolovsky bettered with a triple. Carroll reached 20 points on his fourth three-pointer of the night before assisting to Moran, who pushed the Gran Canaria lead over 20 points. Norris followed with a triple for a 52-28 advantage. Ricci scored Nymburk’s second basket of the quarter and Sokolovsky followed with another three and Lenzly sank another as Nymburk suddenly showed signs of life. McDonald scored, but Ricci matched him and Gran Canaria called timeout. Lenzly made it to the line twice and sank 4 free throws, but could only get his team within 56-42 after three quarters of action. Nymburk continued its late ;push as Sokolvsky sank his third three of the night and Lenzly made it a 10-point game from the line. Augustine ended Granca’s mini-drought and soon after Nymburk head coach Muli Katzurin used a timeout to plat out the rest of the fourth quarter. The result was another Nymburk charge: Sokolovsky missed from downtown, but Lenzly scored on the offensive glass, then Sokolovsky hit a jumper and Lee scored on the break to narrow the gap to 58-52 and cause Granca coach Pedro Martinez to call timeout. Still the visitors pushed on and Lee brought his team within 4. Alas the hosts found their footing and McDonald scored from the line and Carroll went coast to coast to make it 62-54. McDonald added a basket and a free throw to take the lead back to double figures and Carroll fed Savane for a basket to make the final score 69-54.

Head Coaches

MARTINEZ, PEDRO
Gran Canaria 2014
"The game was quite complicated because they are a good team and played with great heart and never gave up, which is normal, because for them it was important to keep the difference as low as possible. The difference of 15 points is good and I liked the ambition with which we played and with concentration, although in the second half we dropped too much on offense. They played very hard in the third quarter. Let's not forget that this is a championship team, which for five seasons has been champions in their country. It is very well coached and I think they are a good team. Already at halftime I told my players that what was happening was a bit fictitious because they were not playing badly, but we were doing great. That prompted them to come out strong in the second part. There was a great atmosphere, people knew the importance of the game and competition. That is something positive, we must continue on that line and I am sure that the day of Crvena Zvezda, a potentially decisive game and against a team with players of the highest level, we will also have a great atmosphere and it is very important for the team."
KATZURIN, MULI
CEZ Nymburk
"Congratulations to Gran Canaria 2014 because I think they deserved the victory. We had chances when the game was tight in the fourth quarter, but we had two or three possessions where we fail to get open shots and they scored. Losing is never fun, but there are still many games. Perhaps no one expected Crvena Zvezda to play so well, but I say that there are still many games. Next is against Gran Canaria 2014 at home. That is the most important. "
