THE TAKE

First place in Group A is the reward as DKV Joventut plays host to Turk Telekom,, both undefeated so far, in Badalona, Spain. Joventut moved to 2-0 with a blowout victory over Guildford Heat, forcing the over-matched British champions into 30 turnovers. Joventut head coach Aito Garcia Reneses saw all 11 of his players score at least two points and hand out at least one assist. And no starter played more than 23 minutes, giving his reserves some important ULEB Cup playing time. Turk Telekom will be another matter altogether, and Reneses knows his low-post players will be key against the mighty Turks. That means that center Jerome Moiso and power forward Jan Jagla will need to have good games, while big man Lonny Baxter is back with the team for his first game this season. Turk Telekom eased past KK Bosna in moving to 2-0, with head coach Ercument Sunter's team shooting 60% for the second straight game. The Turks spread around the scoring much more in their second victory, five players hitting in double figures with small forward Chris Williams leading the way. Turk Telekom's ability to move the ball will be key as the Spanish team relies on their pressure defense to create fastbreak points.

In a showdown between two Group A unbeaten teams, DKV Joventut got the upper hand and blasted Turk Telekom at home by 102-83 in a game that was almost solved after one quarter. The win lifts Penya to a perfect 3-0 in Group A to lead the standings alone, while Turk Telekom drops to 1-2. Two triples by Ricky Rubio and one by Rudy Fernandez rocketed Joventut to a 31-12 lead after 10 minutes that was enough for the hosts to manage until the end. Jan-Hendrick Jagla led the way with 17 points and 8 rebounds, Ferran Laviña added 15, Rudy Fernandez tallied 13 and Lubos Barton posted 12 for Joventut. For Turk Telekom, Chris Williams blasted the rim with 23 points, Michael Wright added 21 and Erwin Dudley had 12.

The first steps of the game went by as DKV Joventut jumped ahead by 6-2 behind 4 points by Jan-Hendrick Jagla to which Lubos Barton added a three for 9-2. Erwin Dudley had a three-point play to maintain Turk Telekom alive but Ricky Rubio started the show of the hosts again with a triple plus foul that launched Joventut to a 22-10 run including two straight extra triples by Ricky and Rudy Fernandez that left things on 31-12 after 10 minutes. Rudy was having a complete performance but Turk Telekom stayed alive almost single-handedly thanks to Michael Wright with 7 points of his own. However, Joventut stayed firm and Demond Mallet maintained the gap with a new three for 45-23 in minute 15. Chris Williams stepped up for the guests with 10 points but Jagla replied with his 14 and Petar Popovic joined him with 8 to lift Joventut to a 59-32. Turk Telekom's 0 of 8 from the arc contrated with the hosts' 6 of 9 that lifted them to a 61-35 edge at the break as all Joventut players had already played at least 4 minutes each. The hosts increased the lead to 30 points fast as Ferran Laviña blasted a new three, 75-45. However, with the big cushion the hosts relaxed and Turk Telekom replied with a 0-7 run including a three by Khalid El-Amin. Pau Ribas and Popovic stopped that fast with 5 straight points. The assists column showed the huge difference was no chance as Joventut dominated 19-5, and after 30 minutes the board showed a 82-58. Williams was still the main man for Turk Telekom as he came back with a basket plus foul siatuation, but it was too big a quest for him to make up for the huge gap, as Popovic had his own three-point play that felt like a wall for the guests. In the remaining minutes both teams played easy as the clock ticked away until the final buzzer with a clear win for Joventut, who stays unbeaten in Group A.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"Tonight our level was almost with the one we had at the start of the season. We keep recovering injured players and our team play gets the benefits of that. We played with intensity and we could keep that with our rotations. I take our game of the first half, it was excellent. It is good for us to play, since we cannot practice a lot so in a way, playing is also our practice. In the second half we relaxed and I am not happy with that because those 19 points of the final score can be a danger in Turk Telekom's arena, a place in which I am sure will not be easy to win. I didn't expect such a clear win, we surprised them at the beginning and we broke the game open in the first half."
SUNTER, ERCUMENT
Turk Telekom
"The game was over in the first half. DKV Joventut was superior and we didn't know how to play behind in the score. In the second half we improved a little but it was too much against a great team. It is clear that there is a big difference between the two domestic leagues we play in. Here, teams are better and in Turkey there are only three or four really good teams. The reaction of my team after the break was positive. Joventut is the best team of the group hands down, they have all positions well-covered and they play good basketball. They have aggressive defense and they score easily."

Players

RIBAS, PAU
DKV Joventut
"We keep getting closer to that team that started the season so strong. We are recovering and this satisfies us. I am sure that the second game in their arena will be difficult, they are a good team and we'll have to be careful. My highlight of the game is that we managed to play as well as at the beginning of the season."
WRIGHT, MICHAEL
Turk Telekom
"The game was over in the first half. It was impossible to come back, but we tried. There was a big difference between both teams. I know the Spanish League and we know it is way stronger than the Turkish one, even though there is good basketball there. We do not give up and we will fight face to face in the second game. The biggest difference tonight was to be found in defense."
