THE TAKE

Two familiar names in European basketball history, Spain’s Asefa Estudiantes and PAOK BC of Greece duke it out in the Spanish capital on Tuesday on opening night of the new Eurocup season. Both teams have been away from the competition for a number of seasons, though they did make their marks earlier in the decade. After a seventh place finish in the Spanish League last season, head coach Luis Casimiro’s squad lost promising Carlos Suarez to Real Madrid in the offseason, but still has plenty of firepower to contend for the Eurocup. Jiri Welsch should be able to make his presence felt at both sides of the court at the forward spot, and the signings of Sergio Sanchez at playmaker and Marc Blanch should deepen the rotation and add some scoring punch. PAOK will probably have its hands full trying to contain dynamic Pancho Jasen too, though Rawle Marshall should offer some deep range and good ball handling to counter. The Greek team has newly signed Donnie McGrath to showcase, and they expect the guard to provide plenty of scoring and the chance to switch positions for Justin Gray, who can play off the ball while veteran Giorgios Apostolids, back home after a seven-year span, mans the point. The other marquee addition for Soulis Markopolous‘s side is Robert Dozier, who teams with mighty center Lazaros Papadopoulos in the paint. They will face a tough rival, though, in Estudiantes’s German Gabriel, a nifty post player with good touch around and far from the basket and great fundamentals that can be the driving force of Casimiro’s offense. Josh Asselin and young Daniel Clark add size and depth inside to a well-balanced Estudiantes roster. Look for a spirited Group F opener as these famous sides look to start a long march towards Eurocup glory.

Quotes Head Coaches

MARKOPOULOS, ANASTASIOS
PAOK BC
"We are beginning our European tour with a very difficult game in a very hot court. Estudiantes is a team that wants to play uptempo and we need to be extra careful about that. We need to try to control the rhythm of the game, have patience and avoid mistakes, that especially at such level, can cost dearly. We are really satisfied that PAOK is returning to the Eurocup and we want to gain experience through our participation, establish good rhythm from playing continuous games and at the same time be competitive against each rival."

Players

GABRIEL, GERMAN
Asefa Estudiantes
"The Eurocup is going to help us. It will make the waiting between games shorter, and that is good for the team. We will have more minutes of competition and all the players in the team will be able to pick up more minutes and develop a competition rhythm. PAOK is a classic European team that is back to the top this year. I have played them several times and they are always a tough rival. I know Lazaros Papadopoulos from when he was playing in Spain. He is a great player."
PAPADOPOULOS, LAZAROS
PAOK BC
"I’m very happy that PAOK is participating in European competitions after so many years. PAOK needs to gain experience, that’s our main goal and through experience results will follow. All premiere games, whether it is Eurobasket, World Championships, Euroleague or Eurocup always hide surprises and if a surprise is to be made in this game, we would like it to be a pleasant one for us. Estudiantes is a classic Spanish team that plays fast, with quick offenses, goes after the offensive rebounds and we need to build our tactics on all of these. We need to pay extra attention to defensive rebounding and to the first pass, in order to have a good development of our game."

Gecevski scored down low immediately after the break and than matched Asselin's free throws with a layup to keep PAOK within 39-37. Caner-Medley hit foul shots and Asselin scored twice in the paint to give Estudiantes some fresh air at 45-39. PAOK went back to its go-to guy, as Papadopoulos scored three times in the low post to get his team as close as 47-45. Ty Ellis rescued Estudiantes with back-to-back three-pointers in an 8-0 run that boosted the hosts' lead to 55-45. Gecevski scored inside and Marshall added a triple to give PAOK some hope at 55-50. Head Coaches

PALOMO, LUIS CASIMIRO
Asefa Estudiantes
"It took us a while to get into the competition rhythm, but I guess everything will be easier from now on. We had a tough game this weekend and didn't play badly today. We improved in defense and I think we had a good game in offense, too. We improved our shooting percentages and that will help us to get better."
