THE TAKE

Lietuvos Rytas looks to bounce back from its first loss of the season when it hosts Partizan Belgrade on Thursday at he Siemens Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania. L. Rytas fell hard at Olympiacos last week, losing by 24. And it didn’t get much better during the week as a number of players returned from the trip ill. And even though star playmaker Bojan Popovic and Milko Bjelica are expected to play, they did miss practice time during the week. And forward Justas Sinica could miss the game altogether. Meanwhile Partizan aims to keep up its momentum after its first Group B win over Entente Orleanaise last week, in which point guard Aleks Maric and playmaker Bo McCalebb shined again. The duel between McCalebb and Popovic could be the battle upon which this game is hinged. Popovic’s experience and leadership have been just as important as his court vision in getting the most of L. Rytas this season. McCalebb, a Euroleague rookie, has burst onto the scene with three strong performances backed by his speed, strength and court awareness. L. Rytas’s top scorer is Marty Gecevicius, who teams with Steponas Babrauskas to give head coach Rimas Kurtinaitis two of the best three-point shooting wings in the league. The aggressive Arturas Jomantas joins them at small forward. They’ll face a Partizan lineup featuring Euroleague champ Dusan Kecman, rising star Jan Vesely and Aleksandar Rasic as three very different, but very effective wing players. In the paint, rookie center Aron Baynes and veteran big man Donatas Zavackas for a strong one-two punch, with Bjelica doing his damage off the bench. Partizan has Maric and Lawrence Roberts as its projected starters and big Slavko Vranes and young Branislav Dekic in reserve. The health of the L. Rytas lineup could be a deciding factor, since Partizan has a deeper team and a lesser showing from the hosts’ regulars could hamper its chances. However, L’ Rytas’s home-court advantage should not be taken lightly. The Lithuanian champs have won 15 of their last 18 Euroleague contests at home. Of course head coach Dusko Vujosevic’s men have been known to steal road games on some of the toughest courts in Europe. Either way, this game has the makings of a 40-minute thriller that could come down to the final shot.

GAME NOTES

Lietuvos Rytas

Martynas Gecevicius has yet to miss a free throw in a Euroleague game, shooting 11 for 11 from the line in 21 career Euroleague appearances.

Gecevicius has made at least one three-pointer in six straight Euroleague games and is shooting 54.2% from downtown over that span.

Steponas Babrauskas leads the league in three-point shooting with a 63.64 % success rate (7 for 11), but is 0 for 6 on two-pointers so far this season.

Partizan Belgrade

Dusan Kecman has made his last 10 free throw attempts in Euroleague games.

After working on his three-point shooting over the summer, Jan Vesely has made 3 out of 4 tries this season. Last year Vesely was 1 for 18 from downtown.

Vesely is the only player in the league to foul out of all three games this season.

Quotes Head Coaches

KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"They are a young yet tough team. They showed their potential in games against Unicaja and Efes Pilsen. They could have won those two. Partizan has no obvious leaders, but I think it is a positive thing for them as they play as a team. It is going to be tough. However, we feel prepared for this game. At home we play with triple energy and we will need to try even more on Thursday because this game is very important for our chances to get to the Top 16. Partizan is one of our direct opponents on the road to advance to the next round. We had some problems with sick players this last week, but they're better now. I actually think they sort of needed a couple of days to rest."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"Lietuvos Rytas is a team without big names and stars. They are playing team basketball and the players are dedicated to the club. Of course, they have weaknesses, but they compensate for them with hard work. Their arena is huge, more than 10,000 fans. It is sold out all the time, so Lietuvos Rytas has a real homecourt advantage. In Belgrade, many people think that a team where Milko Bjelica and Dejan Borovnjak play could not beat Partizan. I don't know why, as they improved a lot after they moved from Partizan and Crvena Zvezda. We shall face a real heavy game. LietuvosRytas is the favorite and our chance is to play as a team. Maybe the pressure should be on Lietuvos Rytas and we should be ready to take advantage of that."

Players

BABRAUSKAS, STEPONAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"Partizan is a young team that's been in the Euroleague for a long, long time. They have changed drastically after last season, of course. But their great coach stayed as did their unique style of play. They are very sharp both in defense and offense. If we want to win, we have to improve our rebounding, avoid turnovers and hold our own on the defensive end. I always say there are no weak teams in the Euroleague. Especially now. This game is very important for us and our future in this year's competition. I suppose it is going to be very tough and 40 minutes may not be enough."
MARIC, ALEKS
Partizan
"We all expect a heavy game in Vilnus. The game is so important to both teams. We are encouraged with our young players' improvement before key games in the Euroleague. We are getting better and better with each practice or game, but we know well that other teams are working, too. I am sure we shall show our better face soon, maybe against Lietuvos Rytas on Thursday."
Martynas Gecevicius - Lietuvos RytasLietuvos Rytas put on a show for its fans as it pounded Partizan Belgrade 78-56 in a Group B contest at Siemens Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania. Martynas Gecevicus scored 19 to lead five L. Rytas scorers in double figures as the Lithuanian champs improved to 3-1. L. Rytas travels to Spain in Week 5 for a showdown with undefeated Group B leader Unicaja for first place. Partizan slipped to 1-3 ahead of a home contest against Olympiacos. L. Rytas surged ahead early as Donatas Zavackas sank 3 three-pointers in the first quarter. Bo McCalebb and Lawrence McCalebb sparker a late second-quarter Partizan run to trim the gap to 44-39 at halftime, but Aron Baynes led a 10-0 start to the second half as the hosts pulled away for good, seeing their lead peak at 25 in the fourth quarter. Zavackas finished with 13 points on 4-for-4 three-point shooting, Baynes and Milko Bjelica netted 12 apiece and Bojan Popovic scored 10 with 5 assists. Aleks Maric posted 16 points and 10 rebounds and McCalebb scored 16 in defeat.

The hosts won the opening tip and went to Baynes, who drew a foul and scored the game’s first point from the line. Maric countered at the other end with the game’s first basket. Jan Vesely and Baynes traded baskets in the paint before Zavackas drilled a three-pointer. Maric scored a second-chance basket to tie the game at 6-6. Zavackas drilled a second three, but Maric continued his strong start with a basket-plus-foul. A basket by Baynes in the paint and a three-point play by Arturas Jomantas on a fast break gave L. Rytas the upper hand and after Zavackas drilled another three, Partizan took a timeout trailing 16-9. Roberts fed Maric inside for another basket, then found McCalebb for a triple and finished a fast break himself, but L. Rytas had a fresh Bjelica off the bench who scored twice, including with a pretty spin move. Roberts powered his way to the basket and later added a free throw to get Partizan within 26-22 after 10 minutes.

Gecevicus hit a jumper with his foot on the three-point line and then stepped back and buried a triple a minute later as the L. Rytas lead reached 9. Maric blocked Baynes at one end and McCalebb drilled a three at the other as the visitors looked to gain some momentum. Popovic and Gecevicius both sank free throws that took the lead to double figures. Baynes further stretched the lead with a basket inside. Zavackas took a seat after a hard foul on Slavko Vranes – his third foul. After Vranes sank the free throws, Popovic darted through the Partizan defense to make it 40-29. McCalebb went to work with a runner and 2 free throws on successive possessions and Aleksandar Rasic fed Maric on a pick-and-roll as the deficit started to shrink. Dusan Kecman capped an 8-0 run with 2 free throws to get Partizan within 3. Bjelica ended the L. Rytas dry spell with a basket inside. Vranes grabbed an offensive rebound for a slam, but Bjelica twisted for a bucket in the final seconds to make it 44-39 at the break.

Bo McCalebb - PartizanBaynes took passes from Gecevicus and Popovic for a pair of two-handed slams as L. Rytas quickly re-established a 10-point lead at the start of the second half. Gecevicus added a jumper and then Popovic rifled in a three from the top of the key to cap a 10-0 charge and make it 54-39. Maric ended a three-and-a-half minute Partizan scoring drought with a free throw, but Zavackas fired in a three, Vesely displayed his athleticism with a slam and soon an opportunity opened up for the visitors as both Baynes and Zavackas sat with their fourth fouls. Maric took advantage with a slam on the offensive glass, but Popovic was open underneath to keep L. Rytas ahead 61-44. Neither team could get a ball in the net for the next few minutes, but that was five with the hosts, who sat on a comfortable lead. With 45 seconds left in the quarter, Gecevicus drilled a step-back three and then Bjelica scored inside to put L. Rytas up 22. McCalebb sank 2 free throws in the closing seconds to make it 66-46 at the end of the quarter.

McCalebb made a layup early in the fourth quarter, but Dejan Borovnjak matched him with a jumper. The action lacked any real intensity as the outcome looked obvious. A Gecevicius jumper saw the L. Rytas lead peak at 73-48. The delighted fans in Vilnius began doing the wave in the final minutes. McCalebb intercepted a pass and took it in for a layup. Promising teenager Aleksandar Mitrovic scored his first Euroleague point from the line as the teams played out the closing minutes without incident.

Head Coaches

KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"It's a very important win. To put it simply, we couldn't lose this game because we see Partizan as our direct opponents to qualify for the Top 16. During the halftime break we discussed problems we had with Maric, who played great tonight. We kind of knew their leaders would reach their averages, but our goal was also to stop all the others. It was a nice game that I'm glad we won. Of course, we don't know what's waiting for us in the future, however, I think we're on the right path."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"Congratulations to Lietuvos Rytas, they deserved this win. They won the game big, and it is very important for the future. They played much harder. However, they won the way we could have assumed they could. Lietuvos Rytas played good enough to win, and, again, deserved this victory. It was a good game played in a great atmosphere. Lietuvos Rytas has great fans. The way they play, like a team, is a merit to Coach Kurtinaitis."

Players

GECEVICIUS, MARTYNAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"I could feel a bit that I was looked after more than in previous games. I got a bit more attention as a threat tonight. But it's normal, besides, we play as a team. I think Partizan felt irritated by our hard and strictly organized defense. Offense, too. They weren't ready and we played really good. It's going to be tougher in Belgrade but we won by 22 points so maybe it will be easier psychologically."
