THE TAKE

Two Group B teams in the heat of a three-way battle for one ticket to the Top 16 clash on Thursday when Zalgiris Kaunas hosts SLUC Nancy. Zalgiris, Nancy and Asseco Prokom are all within one win of each other with two games left to paly. Although Zalgiris won for the first time all season before the winter break, it still has a realistic chance of reaching the next stage if it beats Nancy. However the Lithuanian champs will fall out of contention if they lose. Meanwhile the French champions’ chances will get a big boost with a road win at Zalgiris, which would be their first road win of the campaign. Both teams’ preparations for the game have been less than ideal. Zalgiris’s top performer this season, center Loren Woods, who leads the Euroleague in rebounding and blocked shots, is a game-time decision due to a knee injury. Meanwhile Nancy’s newest signing, center Akin Akingbala, did not spend as much time with his new team as planned due to issues with his visa. Nancy was also without power forward Victor Samnick after he sprained his ankle in practice. Both are expected to play on Thursday. Nancy recorded its first win of the season against Zalgiris in November 69-64 behind Lamayne Wilson, who scored all of his 17 points in the second half. With so many question marks about the team’s inside players, this game could come down to the performances of their forwards. The duo of Paulius Jankunas and Jonas Maciulis are the focus of the Zalgiris attack, with Tadad Milimavicius helping off the bench. Veteran Eurelijus Zukauskas will likely see most of the minutes at center if Woods can’t play. Nancy is led by Wilson, small forward Ricardo Greer and veteran big man Cyril Julian in addition to Samnick and Akingbala. In the backcourt, Nancy turns to the trio of Steed Tchicamboud, John Cox and Jeff Greer, while Zalgiris leans on Mantas Kalnietis and Dainius Salenga, with youngsters Zygimantas Janavicius and Arturas Milanknis coming off the bench. The play of the guards could be crucial as these two teams lead the league in turnovers. Woods’s ability to play is central to Zalgiris’s hopes. He has more blocked shots than the entire Nancy team together, but without him the visitors could have a big advantage inside. Either way the game is certain to be an action-packed affair with two team fighting for their seasons.

GAME NOTES

Zalgiris Kaunas
  • Forward Paulius Jankunas is coming off a Euroleague career-high 23 points in Zalgiris’s last game before the winter break, a win over Asseco Prokom.
  • Guard Mantas Kalnietis raised his level of play in December, averaging 13.3 points, 4.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He recorded just 5 points, 1.8 assists and 0.8 steals per game in the first five games of the season.
  • Center Loren Woods leads the Euroleague in rebounding and blocked shots this season with 9 boards and 2.4 blocks per game.
  • Woods swatted 7 shots in the last game before the winter break, tying him for the third most ever in a Euroleague game with two other former Zalgiris players – Grygorii Khizhniak and Darjus Lavrinovic. In fact, After Stoyko Vrankovic, who holds the single-game record with 10 blocks, the next four spots on the list belong to former or current Zalgiris players.
SLUC Nancy
  • Big man Cyril Julian has performed at an elite level on the road this season, averaging 18.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2 steals in three games away from home so far.
  • Nine different players have appeared in Nancy’s starting lineup this season and only Ricardo Greer has started in every game.
  • Nancy has not won a road game in a European competition in over a year. The club’s last road win was at Frankfurt Skyliners in the ULEB Cup in November 2007. Since then the club lost three straight road games in the ULEB Cup and four in a row in the Euroleague. Nancy has never won a road game against a Lithuanian club, falling at Sialiai in the FIBA Eurocup in 2005 and at Lietuvos Rytas in the ULEB Cup in 2006.

Quotes Head Coaches

KRAPIKAS, GINTARAS
Zalgiris
"We have the same goal as we had in preseason and that goal is the Top 16. Now we know what we have to do if we want to achieve our goal. We need a 15-point margin of victory at home against Nancy. I want my players to play so hard and devoted that our opponents won't even count on defeat by less than 15 points. The game is very important and we are little bit nervous, but I hope that my players will go onto the court with cold heads. Our situation is bit difficult because Loren Woods is questionable for this game. He has a knee problem and so far he has no medical clearance to take part in full-contact basketball."
MONSCHAU, JEAN-LUC
SLUC Nancy
"It’s going to be a big game in Kaunas with both teams trying to keep their chances to qualify for the Top 16 alive. We know how difficult it is to win in Kaunas. So, we first need to have everybody healthy and then to believe in our chances and to play a consistent game."

Players

SALENGA, DAINIUS
Zalgiris
"In modern basketball, it's not so difficult to win by 15 points if you play good. In the game against Prokom, we were only a few points ahead after the first half, but in the second half our lead extended to 19 points. Of course, it's hard to tell now if we will win by 15 points or not, but we are working hard and I hope it will pay off. We know they like to play one-on-one. They play more individually, so we don't have to let them feel the shooting touch, because otherwise it will be very hard to stop their players."
TCHICAMBOUD, STEED
SLUC Nancy
"We have no pressure. This is not a basketball game like the others, but we have already beaten them and we know how to beat them again. Their strength is on the wings with Salenga and Maciulis."
Jonas Maciulis - ZalgirisDespite losing its first seven games and missing its starting center, Zalgiris lives to fight another day for Group B's last Top 16 berth after it stopped visiting SLUC Nancy 105-94 on Thursday in Kaunas, Lithuania. The result left Zalgiris and Nancy tied for fourth place at 2-7 with Asseco Prokom Sopot of Poland. All three teams play the qualified trio above them next week: Nancy at home against Siena, Zalgiris at Barcelona and Prokom at Panathinaikos. Zalgiris will advance with a victory if either Nancy or Prokom lose. Nancy will advance only if it wins while both Zalgiris and Prokom lose. If all three win or all three lose, Prokom advances by a three-point difference in games among the three. Zalgiris prolonged Thursday's victory trying to make up that difference, as a triple by Jonas Maciulis to start the final minute effectively sealed the outcome, 87-79. A total of 33 points were shared after that thanks to many fouls. However, despite tying the Euroleague record for points in a quarter, 41, Zalgiris could not overcome, in the end, Prokom's 29-point victory against Nancy in the second game of the season. Maciulis finished with 29 points for the winners, who played without their second-best scorer and top rebounder, Loren Woods. Dainius Salenga added 18 points, Tadas Klimavicius 15, Mantas Kalnietis 12 and Andrius Milaknis 11. Paulius Jankunas shined with 15 points and 17 rebounds. For Nancy, Steed Tchicamboud led teh way with 21 points, while Ricardo Greer had 19, Cyril Julian 16 and Lamayne Wilson 10.

Eurelijus Zukauskas tried to set the tone for Zalgiris by blocking a Ricardo Greer shot, but Greer grabbed the ball and scored. Zukauskas was hit in the face on the play and left the floor with a bloody nose. Klimavicius stepped in and made his presence felt, scoring twice as Zalgiris went up 8-4. Julian closed the gap with a three-point play, but Maciulis and Jankunas kept the hosts rolling. Julian flicked in a one-hander only to see Kalnietis connect from downtown and soon add free throws to make it 17-9. Nancy came back to life with baskets on consecutive trips downcourt from Victor Samnick and Tchicamboud. Akin Akinbala followed with his first Euroleague basket – a short jumper – and then Jeff Greer knotted the game with a long jumper. Ricardo Greer went to the glass and then penetrated inside to complete a 0-12 charge for reenergized Nancy. Salenga’s layup in transition drew Zalgiris back to 19-21 after 10 minutes.

Steed Tchicamboud - SLUC NancyTchicamboud and Klimavicus traded baskets before Salenga’s jumper tied the score at 23-23. Tchicamboud then fed Akingbala for a monster jam that silenced the crowd and Wilson added to Zalgiris’s woes with a bucket in the paint. Michel Moraindais flew in for another impressive dunk to give the visitors a 23-29 lead. Maciulis revived Zalgiris with a triple, but baskets by Julian and John Cox kept Nancy in control. Jankunas brought Zalgiris all the way back with a triple that tied the score at 35-35 and Klimavicus converted a three-point play to put the Lithuanian champs ahead. Wilson rose high for a one-handed slam, but Zalgiris finished the half on a high note as Kalnietis’s jumper beat the buzzer to make it 40-37.

Ankingbala opened the second half with a dunk and Ricardo Greer soon penetrated to tie it up, 41-41. Jankunas’s slam and Maciulis’s three thrilled the crowd, as did blocks by Jankunas and Klimavicus at the other end, helping the hosts go up 48-43. But a foul on Tadavicius and a technical on the Zalgiris bench threatened to shift the momentum. Nancy didn't take advantage, however, making just 2 of 6 free throws to get within 48-45. Zalgiris turned around and got a Klimavicius layup, a Salenga free throw and a Jankunas jumper to make it 53-45. A fourth-chance basket by Greer rallied Nancy within 53-49, but Maciulis did the same thing on the other end. His came with a free throw plus a technical on Samnick, so when Arturas Milaknis ended the possession with a driving layup, Zalgiris had 6 more points and a 59-49 lead. Julian got a basket back for Nancy, Layman a free throw and Cox a big triple to make it 61-55. Before the quarter could end, Jankunas completed a three-point play for Zalgiris, but despite his fourth foul on that play, Julian did the same, leaving a 64-58 scoreboard after 30 minutes

Dainius Salenga - ZalgirisRicardo Greer struck first in the fourth quarter, with an acrobatic layup and free throw at 64-61. Klimavicius answered for Zalgiris, but Tchicamboud soon got it back with a full-court drive. He then drew a fourth foul on Jankunas and followed it with another basket at 66-65. Milaknis came out of nowhere to give Zalgiris new life with a big triple, but Greer got another easy layup for a 69-67 score with 6 mintues left. Sarunas Vasiliauskis and Milanknis scored for Zalgiris around a basket by Akingbala before Morandais nailed a triple to make it 73-72. Another big offensive rebound let Maciulis bury a huge three-pointer at 76-72. Tchicamboud next hit 3 of 4 free throws, again cutting the difference to a point, 76-75. After a timeout with 3 minutes left, Wilson put Nancy ahead with an out-and-in triple from the top, but Salenga drove, dunk and hit the go-ahead free throw. Seconds later, he blasted a triple to make it 82-78 and added a pair of free throws for good measure. When, entering the final minute, Maciulis followed him from downtown to make it 87-79, the outcome was clear. And the fouling started. When the scoring finally ended 33 points later, Zalgiris had tied the single-quarter record of 41 points held since 2000 by Real Madrid. That didn't suppply all the tie-break advantages Zalgiris wanted, but after seven straight losses to open the season, its Top 16 fate was largely in its own hands now.

Head Coaches

KRAPIKAS, GINTARAS
Zalgiris
"Life is a strange thing. In the beginning of the season, we were happy about every win in any tournament. Tonight we got the second win in Euroleague, but we don't share happiness. However, we won by 11 points, and it is a good result. We are getting better but tonight we needed to play just a little bit better. We still have a tiny chance. What we need to do now is to win in Barcelona."
MONSCHAU, JEAN-LUC
SLUC Nancy
"After this even and interesting game, both teams are disappointed. We needed a win while Zalgiris needed a win by 15 points. We had an opportunity to win when we were leading by two points with two minutes to go in the final quarter, but Zalgiris executed a few three-point plays, hit a few three-pointers and made some free throws. They took over control of the game at the end. It was nice game to watch, with many highlights."

Players

KALNIETIS, MANTAS
Zalgiris
"I cannot say that we had a bad game tonight. We played hard and gave our hearts. Tonight, it was a lot of open shots from outside as well as under the basket that should go in but it just didn't. Another key factor was our defense. We ran offense really well and scored a lot of points, but on defense we didn't play well. Our defense failed us. We didn't stick with our defensive plan."
JULIAN, CYRIL
SLUC Nancy
"We couldn't get the rebounds and when you cannot get rebounds, you cannot run fastbreaks and control the game. Now, we have to look forward and think about next week's game. We had a good opportunity tonight, but we let it go. Zalgiris played very good and had a fantastic crowd behind them. They played fast and hit some big shots. Tonight we lost, but next week we definitely are going to win."
