THE TAKE

CSKA Moscow will aim to take a 2-0 lead in its best-of-five Quarterfinal Playoffs series when it hosts Partizan Belgrade in Game 2 on Thursday. CSKA’s iron-clad defense was at its best in Tuesday’s series opener as it set a number of records in controlling the pace of the 56-47 victory. CSKA held Partizan to a playoff record 3 points in the opening period as it jumped out to a controlling lead. The 47 points allowed were also a playoff record, as were the combined 103 scored by both teams. CSKA never trailed, but was unable to pull away due to a woeful shooting night from outside. CSKA, the league’s best three-point shooting team this season entering the game, finished 2 for 22 from downtown. The heroes for the hosts were Erazem Lorbek, who established an inside presence early en route to 16 points, and reserve forward Viktor Khryapa, who totaled 8 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks – much of which came in the fourth quarter as the reigning champs fended off Partizan’s late rally. The visitors walk away from the game with some hope after outscoring CSKA by 1 over the final three periods. Partizan will hope that a better effort over the full 40 minutes on Thursday will result in a different outcome. One are Partizan will look to fix is its scoring in the paint as only one member of head coach Dusko Vujoevic’s frontcourt shot better than 50% (Jan Vesely – 3 for 3). Partizan, one of the league’s top rebounding clubs, managed only 8 offensive rebounds and was matched 34-34 by CSKA on the glass overall. Partizan averaged 15 offensive rebounds and outrebounded CSKA by a total of 30 in their two previous meetings this season. One advantage that Partizan can look forward to in Game 2 is fresher legs: No visiting players came close to playing 30 minutes while three CSKA starters played more than 33. That could help the Partizan backcourt of Milenko Tepic, Aleksandar Rasic and Uros Tripkovic against the likes of J.R. Holden and Trajan Langdon. However CSKA;s bench still features the likes of Zoran Planinic, Nikos Zisis and Euroleague MVP Ramunas Siskauskas, who all saw limited action in Game 1. Likewise in the paint, even if Erazem Lorbek (37 minutes) tires, a fresh Terence Morris is waiting in the wings to team with Matjaz Smodis against Partizan’s Novica Velickovic, Stephane Lasme and Vesely. It’s hard to imagine CSKA struggling from outside again regardless of Partizan’s defensive strategy, a fact combined with CSKA’s home court advantage makes head coach Ettore Messina’s men favorites to win Game 2.

  • The best individual performance of Zoran Planinic’s career came in Belgrade against Partizan. Planinic scored a career-best 30 points on 5-for-5 three-point shooting for Cibona Zagreb in an 81-76 loss at Pionir Hall in November 2001.
  • Planinic is 1 assist away from tying Willie Solomon for 25th place on the Euroleague Basketball career assists charts. Planinic enters Thursday’s playoff game with 257 career assists.
  • Guard Nikos Zisis is 6 assists behind Panathinaikos guard Dimitris Diamantidis for 10th place on the Euroleague Basketball career charts in that category. Diamantidis, who is currently injured, has 351 career assists.

  • Guard Uros Tripkovic has made at least one three-pointer in 15 consecutive Euroleague games. He is shooting 43.3% from downtown over that span. He ranks second in the league this season with 40 triples. (39 of 90)
  • Milenko Tepic’s best all-around game of the season came in the win over CSKA in Moscow. Tepic produced 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists to lead Partizan to the win.

Erazem Lorbek - CSKA MoscowA second defensive clinic in as many games led CSKA Moscow to a convincing 77-50 win over Partizan Belgrade on Tuesday and a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five Quarterfinal Playoffs series. After two games in the Russian capital, the series heads to Serbia next week where CSKA can close it out and advance to its seventh consecutive Final Four with one more win. CSKA never trailed, pulling away early and relying on its defense to coast to the win. After a Uros Tripkovic triple made it 8-5 in the opening minutes, CSKA went on a 22-3 tear to take control for good. The hosts led 43-22 at halftime and scored the first 10 points of the second half to erase any doubts. The lead peaked at 33 before Stephane Lasme tried to ignite a Partizan comeback. But that wasn’t in the cards as the champs continued to dominate the rest of the way, never letting Partizan closer than 20 in the second half. Erazem Lorbek paced the winners with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Ramunas Siskauskas and Terence Morris added 11 points each and Nikos Zisis scored 10 for the winners, who outrebounded Partizan 40-25. Lasme led the Serbian champs with 15 points. He was one of three Partizan players that fouled out.

Uros Tripkovic - PartizanCSKA won the opening tip and went inside, drawing a quick foul from Partizan’s top shot-blocking threat, Lasme, who started in place of center Slavko Vranes. Lorbek put the hosts on the scoreboard, before Lasme fed a cutting Jan Vesely for a dunk and Partizan’s first points. Matjaz Smodis drained a three and Viktor Khryapa and Lorbek added free throws as the champs showed patience on offense and an aggressive temperament on defense that stifled Partizan. Tripkovic came off the bench to drill a three-pointer for the visitors, however a defensive lapse allowed Lorbek an uncontested slam at the other end. Siskauskas started to heat up with a three-point play and a jumper to give CSKA a 15-5 lead. A Tripkovic free throw ended a 9-0 CKSA charge, but Morris completed a rare four-point play and gave the hosts a 21-6 lead after 10 minutes.

Milenko Tepic penetrated to start the second quarter in promising fashion, but a technical foul on the visiting bench allowed Siskauskas to add 2 free throws and Zisis to stretch the lead to 17 with a jumper. Zoran Planinic fed Lorbek for a slam and Morris hit his second three – already matching his team’s total from Game 1 – as CSKA took total control of the game, 30-8. Zarko Rakocevic showed signs of life for Partizan with a pair of baskets and Lasme added another bucket and later 2 free throws to complete a 0-8 Partizan push. Trajan Langdon got a friendly roll and Lorbek scored over Vranes to reassert the hosts’ dominance. Lasme attacked the rim for a vicious slam and foul, however the momentum switched hands when head coach Dusko Vujosevic was slapped with a technical foul and Siskauskas nailed 2 free throws. Zisis flew in for a layup and later added free throws to increase the gap to 20. A pair of Smodis free throws and 1 from Vesely made it 43-22 at the half.

Ramunas Siskauskas - CSKA Moscow and Stephane Lasme - PartizanA combination of strong defense and poor shooting produced a slow start to the third quarter, with the first field goal coming only after three-and-a-half minutes when Lorbek made a long jumper. A second Lorbek three and 4 Khryapa free throws capped a 10-0 run that put the champs up 31. Tripkovic ended Partizan’s drought, but CSKA continued to get to the line and score. Strahinja Milosevic and Vranes scored for the visitors only for Planinic’s three to keep CSKA ahead by more than 30. Tripkovic became the first Partizan player to foul out. Threes by Tepic and Lasme only narrowed the gap to 61-34 after three quarters.

Lasme led Partizan on a last-effort run to save the game and his three brought the visitors within 20, 61-41. Langdon answered with a jumper before Partizan used a timeout to plan one last attack. CSKA restored a 25-point gap when Zisis scored on the break and then added a basket on the offensive glass. Lasme fouled out with five-minutes to go, signaling the end for Partizan. Both teams emptied their benches in the final minutes with a steal and three by Cedomir Vitkovac in the closing seconds that denied CSKA another defensive record the only highlight in the end.

"We played good and solid game from minute one. It was important that we were able to stay concentrated on defense and at the same time improved our offense – with better ball movement and higher shooting percentage. But the win means only that we will play a probable deciding game at home. Siskauskas played off the bench because I asked him before the series began if he's comfortable to do that. It was very important for us to stay with Khryapa as the starting small forward. Victor helps us to deal with Partizan's big men, who make the team from Belgrade the bestr rebounding team in the Euroleague, and Khryapa also helps us with defense and passing. And Siskauskas scored a number of baskets today when his teammates couldn't score. Holden did not score a point today but I am absolutely satisfied with his play, because he controlled the tempo of the game and shut down Tripkovic, the best scorer on the other team."
