THE TAKE

Olympiacos will look to wrap up a berth in the Quarterfinal Playoffs when it hosts Armani Jeans Milano on Thursday at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus, Greece. The Reds enter the game tied with Tau Ceramica for first place in Top 16 Group E with a 3-1 record. Their only loss came in the Top 16 opener at Milano, which has since dropped to 2-2 with back-to-back losses against Tau and must win in Athens to keep its playoff hopes alive. Milano led from start to finish as it beat Olympiacos 76-74 in January behind 15 points each from Luca Vitali and David Hawkins and some late heroics from Mike Hall. But head coach Piero Bucchi's men have struggled as of late, losing their games against Tau by a combined 51 points. Now fully healthy and with midseason signings Hollis Price and Maurice Taylor more integrated with the team, Milano is as ready as ever for its biggest game of the season. Meanwhile Olympiacos has positive forward momentum after winning three straight Last 16 games, not to mention a weekend derby with Panathinaikos. Center Nikola Vujcic is coming off back-to-back 20-plus point games, power forward Ioannis Bourousis is at his best and former Euroleague MVP Theo Papaloukas has racked up more assists than any other player this season as he orchestrates the offense. Their strong play has helped people forget about the shoulder injury that has sidelined Josh Childress for the Top 16, but Childress will be back and on the Reds bench, though whether he will play is not known. The Reds might need him, too, because a foot injury has hampered forward Giorgios Printezis, who netted a Euroleague career-high 22 points against Milano when they last met. Milano will challenge the Reds in the paint with a combination of Pape Sow, Mason Rocca, Taylor and Mindaugas Katelynas, while Olympiacos will counter with Vujcic, Bourousis, Zoran Erceg and possibly Sofoklis Schortsanitis, who missed a practice earlier this week, but is apparently healthy. The battle at point guard could be the key to the game, with Price and backup Yohann Sangare looking to create against Lyn Greer and Jannero Pargo. Papaloukas, Yotam Halperin and Milos Teodosic complete the backcourt for head coach Panagiotis Giannakis. Bucchi turns to shooting threats Jobey Thomas and Vitali as well as athletic swingman Hawkins to ignite his team from the wings. Hall will face Panagiotis Vasilopoulos at small forward. Coming off its big win against rival Panathinaikos in the Greek League shows that Olympiacos is in peak form for this matchup and the fact that the Reds are 6-1 at home this season makes them the clear favorite. However Milano’s spirit has triumphed with its back to the wall many times this season – including its regular-season finale in Athens to reach the Top 16.

GAME NOTES

Olympiacos
  • Guard Lynn Greer played under current Armani Jeans Milano head coach Piero Bucchi at Eldo Napoli in the 2005-06 season. Greer led the Italian League in scoring with 23.5 points per game that season. Milano center Mason Rocca was also a teammate of Greer’s at Milano.
  • The longest game of center Nikola Vujcic’s lengthy career came against Armani Jeans Milano. Vujcic, then with Maccabi Tel Aviv, played just over 48 minutes in Maccabi’s 96-95 double overtime win over Milano in December 2005. He finished that game with 26 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists.
  • Vujcic scored at least 20 points in both of his last two games. It marked the first time he has reached the 10-point mark in back-to-back games since the 2006-07 regular season.
  • Forward Giorgios Printezis scored a season-high 22 points in the Top 16 opener this season against Armani Jeans.
  • The Reds faced Milano for the first time in the Champions Cup in 1996-97, in two thrilling games. They lost on the road 71-73 and won at home, 84-75, on the way to winning the trophy at the Final Four in Rome.
Armani Jeans Milano
  • Guard David Hawkins was a college teammate of Olympiacos’s Lynn Greer at Temple University. They played together for two seasons from 2000 to 2002. Greer and Hawkins were first and second, respectively, in scoring and assists in for the Owls in that second season.
  • Hawkins has scored in double figures and made at least 1 three-pointer in seven straight Euroleague appearances. His 14.2 points, 82.3% free-throw shooting and 2.9 assists per game al represent Euroleague career highs for a season.
  • Point guard Hollis Price has made a three-pointer in each of his 24 career Euroleague appearances.
  • Price began the season at Dynamo Moscow, where he was a teammate of current Olympiacos guard Jannero Pargo. Both left Moscow to join their new clubs prior to the Top 16.
  • Guard Jobey Thomas has made at least 1 three-pointer in all 13 games in which he has played this season.

Quotes Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"Armani Jeans Milano shows its good face in the Euroleague, as they have played very well, especially when they face teams that are supposed to be stronger than them. We have to be really concentrated and have patience in our game. Perhaps it sounds monotone, but this is what we need at this moment. I want to believe that our team and our fans will not loosen up after the win we accomplished over Panathinaikos in the Greek League. This must not and I am positive it will not happen on Thursday."
BUCCHI, PIERO
AJ Milano
"It will be a very difficult game against such a deep roster, with great talent, athleticism, and a team that was built to win this competition. We know they have a great crowd to support them in a very hot arena. We know all these things, but we go to Greece willing to play a good game to advance in the Euroleague. We played a very good game at home in the first leg, we have to repeat it, but playing in their house will be harder."

Players

ERCEG, ZORAN
Olympiacos
"The upcoming game is a no-tomorrow game for both teams. The winner continues towards the Euroleague playoffs, while the loser says goodbye to the competition. I think we hold our luck in our hands. We compete on our home court and we have to take advantage of our fans’ help like we did in all the home games so far. The win over Panathinaikos belongs to the past and our full attention goes to the upcoming game. The battle against Armani Jeans Milano means the whole year for us and we are determined to give our best to beat them."
MORDENTE, MARCO
AJ Milano
"It will be a great game at Piraeus, which is a very difficult, but also a very exciting play to play. We will bet all of our European season at the Peace and Friendship Stadium, and we have to be ready, we will be ready. We have to try to win because we deserve to be qualified for the playoffs, looking at what we did all over this season in the Euroleague. It will be a battle, and we'll have to fight from the first ball of the game. These kind of games are beautiful."
Nikola Vujcic - OlympiacosIn a thriller on Thursday, Olympiacos found its way to the Quarterfinal Playoffs for a fourth consecutive season by outlasting direct rival Milano Jeans Milan by 84-81 at home in Piraeus, Greece. Olympiacos lifted its record to 4-1 and, by eliminating Milano, joined co-leader Tau Ceramica, also 4-1, in taking Group E's two playoff spots. Olympiacos visits Tau next week for a winner-take-all finale for first place, which comes with homecourt advantage in the playoffs. The Reds suffered to stay ahead of Milano all the way to the finish on Thursday before a late triple by Lynn Greer and layup by Theodoros Papaloukas opened up the margin to victory. Nikola Vujcic led the winners with 27 points, while Ioannis Bourousis seconded his team's dominance inside with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Yotam Halperin added 10 points for the winners. Milano got a huge game of 27 points and 9 rebounds from Mike Hall, mostly in the first three quarters, before David Hawkins took over with 21.

Bourousis scored the first 13 points for Olympiacos but Milano was never far behind and tied at 39-39 by halftime and 59-59 after three quarters. Back-to-back threes-pointers down the stretch by Hawkins cut the difference to 74-70 before Papaloukas found Greer for a triple that kept Milano at a distance until the finish. Bourousis scored 3 consecutive baskets to get Olympiacos started at 6-2. But, Milano feed the ball inside, too, as Hall connected for a nice dunk-plus-free throw at 6-5. Bourousis kept on dominating, though, offering the home crowd a magnificent one-man show. After four-and-a-half minutes of play, Bourousis had scored all his team's points as Olympiacos led 13-9. Milano was not executing well from the perimeter, but the visitors did a great job on offensive rebounding, having collected 7 of them so far. Hall and Pape Sow put two of them back in the basket for a 13-13 tie. Jannero Pargo became the first Olympiacos player not named Bourousis to score as his three-pointer made it 16-13. Vujcic got the hint and added consecutive baskets at 20-13. Milano connected with a three-pointer by Hall after almost 4 minutes of scoring silence, the Hawkins nailed a jumper. He later drove to the basket to allow the guests stay close at 24-20 after 10 minutes.

Mike Hall - AJ MilanoHall continued to hurt Olympiacos with the first basket of the second quarter as Milano's zone defense momentarily hurt the hosts' ability to create opportunities. Vujcic then took over for Olympiacos for points from the line and a nice fade-away at 28-22. The Reds kept trying to solve the zone by feeding the ball inside, where Vujcic kept scoring or dishing to a 30-26 score. Still, Hall was unstoppable for the visitors despite four different Olympiacos defenders - Bourousis, Vujcic, Ian Vouyoukas, and Zoran Erceg - having taken turns on him. When Hollis Price put his name on the scoreboard, too, Milano had cut the difference to 31-29. Vujcic dominated the paint again for 5 points in the row at 36-31, but Milano kept playing with confidence and plenty second chances as Maurice Taylor scored inside and Marco Mordente from behind the arc to tie it up, 36-36. Hall then grabbed another offensive board and scored for a 39-39 halftime score to give himself 16 points already.

Vujcic and Bourousis kept on proving that they could dominate inside with a total of 7 points between them for a 46-41 Olympiacos advantage right after halftime. On the other hand, Hall continued to prove that he was too quick for the Olympiacos big man, as his triple made it 46-44. The story did not alter; Vujcic dominated inside with another couple of baskets, but Hall punished the Reds from outside with another three-pointer. When Price added Milano's third triple in the row the score was tied at 50-50. Josh Childress returned to action after two months sidelined with injury to play at power forward as the fifth Olympiacos player to to guard Hall. However, the latter was in the zone and buried another three-pointer to give Milano its first lead all game, 53-55. Panagiotis Vassilopoulos tied it and then was ordered to man-to-man Hall. But, Hall had no trouble connecting again on the way to another tie, 59-59, after 30 minutes.

Ioannis Bourousis - OlympiacosBoth teams shared some bad decisions to open the final period before Taylor and Bourousis exchanged baskets at 62-61. Erceg connected and Yotam Halperin stole the ball to finish a fastbreak that allowed Olympiacos to take a 66-61 advantage. Price stepped up for Milano to net an off-balance triple, but immediately Halperin answered back in the same way, 69-64. Erceg was accurate from the line and Papaloukas nailed a jumper to build a seemingly safe 73-64 cushion for Olympiacos. Milano was not ready to surrender, however. Hawkins fired in back-to-back triples to cut the difference to 74-71 with 3 minutes still to play. Greer popped in his three-pointer to curb the visitors' enthusiasm at 77-71. Sow and Luca Vitali brought Milano close again at 77-74, but Papaloukas connected from the base-line and when Hawkins missed a three-pointer the odds were now clearly in favor of the hosts. Vujcic increased the lead to 81-74 with less than a minute left until the buzzer. Vitali and Hawkins trimmed it again, to 81-78, as Halperin missed 2 free throws. Greer made both of his at 83-78, however, and when Hall and Price did not find the target from the arc, the winner was decided as Olympiacos sealed a 84-81 victory over mighty Milano.

Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"We expected that this game would have been a tough one. We used a lot of our energy in the game against Panathinaikos in the Greek League, and we knew we had to be patient and focused against Milano in order to win. We were facing some trouble setting up good opportunities on the offensive end. Things become even more difficult when we started to play nervous. We are building our character. A game like this one helps us to become stronger. That’s not the case when we win by 20 points. We had a hard time playing for 35 minutes against a zone defense."
BUCCHI, PIERO
AJ Milano
"We had a difficult job. We knew that before the tip-off. We tried to play our best. We had to play the perfect game in order to win. We used the zone defense to help us to control the rebounds and run the floor. In that way we never allowed Olympiacos to dictate the tempo and managed to connect for some easy baskets. But, we didn’t make it at the end."

Players

VUJCIC, NIKOLA
Olympiacos
"We didn’t expect to have such a difficult, pressed night. We started the game as planned, and hurt the visitors’ defense according to the orders. But, we lost some rebounds and weren’t concentrated at times. Anyway, we finally did what we had to do; we won, end of story. The next game at Tau is very important. We want to qualify for the quarterfinals from the first spot and not at second."
PRICE, HOLLIS
AJ Milano
"We knew that this was going to be a tough game. Olympiacos has a great team and it’s difficult to handle, especially in Athens. But, we managed to stay in the game and even got a slight edge. We did a good job against Olympiacos’s perimeter players, but their big men hurt us a lot. We lost our concentration on some plays and they build a small margin down the stretch. We didn’t give up, however we lacked luck in some details."
