The Take

Two teams on an upward swing will duel in the Spanish capital on Thursday when Real Madrid hosts Zalgiris Kaunas at Barclaycard Center. Marid saw its three-game winning streak come to an end last week when it lost by a single point on the road at Fenerbahce Istanbul. Zalgiris has found its form by winning three of its last four, including its first road win last week at Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade. Madrid has dominated the meetings over the years between the clubs, with a resounding 13-1 mark in the EuroLeague, including six in a row over the past two seasons. Los Blancos enter the game tied for the second-best record in the competition at 7-3 led by November MVP Sergio Llull (18.9 ppg., 6.0 apg.). Jaycee Carroll (10.5ppg.) and Rudy Fernandez (9.3 ppg., 3.7 apg.) are two more premier perimeter weapons for Coach Pablo Laso, while Anthony Randolph (11.4 ppg., 6.5 rpg.), Gustavo Ayon (8.2 ppg.) and Othello Hunter form an intimidating frontline. The Lithuanian champs come in tied for 11th place with a 4-6 record. Forwards Brock Motum (13.2 ppg.) and Paulius. Jankunas (12.8 ppg., 6.7 rpg.) are Zalgiris’s top scorers, while Leo Westermann (10.8 ppg., 5.4 apg.) directs the action at point guard. Sharpshooter Arturas Milaknis (8.7 ppg.) is an important piece for Coach Jasikevicius, too. Zalgiris attacks the glass and is ranked second in the league with 14 offensive rebounds per game and will need to convert those into points against the second-best scoring team in the league.
