THE TAKE

Turk Telekom (3-1) can book its spot in the Last 16 with another Group D victory at home in Ankara, Turkey over Bnei Hasharon (1-3) of Israel on Tuesday. Head coach Ercument Sunter's Turkish side improved to 3-1 before the winter break by beating Aris 78-65 at home to also gain the tie-breaker advantage in the race for first place. If Turk Telecom defeats Bnei Hasharon and Panellinios defeats Aris, the Turks will also clinch first place in Group D. Sunter went mainly with an eight-man rotation against Aris with reserve forward Michael Wright leading the team with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. Forward Winston Kennedy and center Erwin Dudley both had 10 points and combined for 14 rebounds and 3 blocks while four other players scored at least 8 points. Turk Telecom dominated Aris on defense, allowing the guests to shoot just 34% from the floor. And Turk Telecom also committed just 8 turnovers. Sunter will undoubtedly stress the importance of not looking past Bnei despite winning 76-54 in Week 1 in Hasharon. Turk Telekom held Hasharon to just 31% shooting for that game and was balanced offensively, with four players scoring in double figures. Bnei Hasharon meanwhile is not yet eliminated from the next round after beating Panellinois 78-76 to improve to 1-3. Still, it must have plenty of luck. Head coach Ariel Beit Halahmy's Israeli side needs to win both games against Aris and Turk Telekom, get the tie-break advantage and wait for one of those teams to lose again. In Bnei's victory, guard Meir Tapiro made five of six free throws in the final seconds for 21 points in helping secure the win. And guard Segado Belcher had 15 points and 5 steals. Halahmy's men forced 20 turnovers but also committed 20 turnovers and shot just 40% for the game. Those are not the kind of numbers which will get the job done against Turk Telekom.
