The Torneo Citta di Roma has a new champion! It is none other than Fenerbahce Ulker from Turkey, who defeated Montepaschi Siena on the final game played
Wednesday by 65-63. Thanks to domination in the first half, FB Ulker resisted all the attempts from the Italian team to come back, even a late 0-11 run for
62-63, and managed to punch a ticket to the final round of the Nike International Junior Tournament to be played in Barcelona, Spain from May 5 to 8, 2011
coinciding with the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Basketball Final Four! Candan Berkay led the winners with 19 points. Oguzhan Turan added 10. For Siena, Diego Monaldi almost gave the win to his team with his 17 points as Giovanni Severini added 15.
The first quarter was close all along as both teams alternated leads until after 10 minutes Fenerbahce Ulker was leading by five points, 19-14. The second
period started with a 0-6 Montepaschi Siena burst that put them ahead 19-20, but the reply was an 11-5 charge led by Candan Berkay, who was becoming the main
referent of the Turkish team in offense. After that, Fener dominated at ease until the halftime buzzer, 40-27. The third period also started with a new 0-7
burst by Siena to get back into the game at 40-34 until Nuri Gul Gunei broke the spell with a free throw. Fenerbahce came back to life soon enough but
Montepaschi had trimmed the deficit down to 55-48 as the game entered the final and decisive quarter. Fenerbahce Ulker kept the rival away with a double-
digit margin in minute 33 as Mehmet Sanli lifted the layup, 62-52. Right after that however, Siena was back on track with a 0-8 run capped by Diego Monaldi
to make it 62-60 in minute 38. Monaldi was back on track with another huge three that put Siena in command after many minutes, 62-63 entering minute 39. Erbil Eroglu gave Fener some much needed oxygen but Monaldi's one-man show was still driving the Turks crazy but Marco Perin's turnover in the last minute led to a few Siena fouls that allowed Fener to make it 65-63 as Kerem Hotic posted a free throw. Monaldi went to the line, but missed both attempts when it was most important to let Fenerbahce escape with the final win.
