The Take

Menora Mivtachim Arena will be hopping as Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv returns from an encouraging road win to host Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz on Thursday. This will be their 25th game since 2002 and Baskonia holds a slight 11-13 edge. Maccabi rallied to beat Brose Bamberg in Germany behind Pierre Jackson's opening-night blow-up last week, which earned him the MVP of the Round honor. Baskonia needs to rebound from a double-digit loss at Olympiacos. Rebounding will be a key point of improvement for the visitors, who were overwhelmed on the boards by 40-27 last week. Still dealing with early injuries, Baskonia will need a couple players to step up big in Tel Aviv, with Johannes Voigtmann, Tornike Shengelia and Marcelinho Huertas being the main candidates. Maccabi, meanwhile, had great shooting percentages from Jackson, Michael Roll, Alex Tyus and Artsiom Parakhouski, especially, and will be hard to beat at home if that keeps up. Any EuroLeague game night in Tel Aviv is cause for celebration, but the home opener for a team trying to bounce back from a tough season should be truly festive.

Head Coaches

PRIGIONI, PABLO
Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz
"We have a very difficult opponent ahead of us, but we also have time to prepare and go out there and compete. The group must remain united and compete against Maccabi. We must play with heart and start the game concentrated. We must also focus on small details. I think we are not far from what we want."

Players

HUERTAS, MARCELINHO
Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz
"We are going to Tel Aviv with the idea of winning the game and being aware that we can all give a little more. We must play in transition, with speed and be a bit more unpredictable. We must read the games quickly. Maccabi has loads of individual quality and many players who can score. The one on one defense will be the key. We must take care of the ball and control the tempo."

Maccabi and Baskonia have been closely matched in their meetings this century, including two victories for the Israeli team in consecutive Final Fours in 2005 and 2006 - the former of which came in the championship game in Moscow, where Maccabi successfully defended its title by beating Baskonia 90-78. Final Four MVP and current Zalgiris coach Sarunas Jasikevicius led the winners with 22 points.

Maccabi coach Neven Spahija coached Baskonia during the 2007-08 season, when the club was known as Tau Ceramica. He led Baskonia to one of the most successful seasons in club history with a EuroLeague Final Four appearance and Spanish League championship. Current Baskonia head coach Pablo Prigioni was the Baskonia point guard that season. Maccabi forward DeShaun Thomas was a teammate of Baskonia point guard Marcelinho Huertas during the 2014-15 season at FC Barcelona.

Toko Shengelia set his EuroLeague career scoring with 22 points against Maccabi last season.

Baskonia set its club record for three-pointers made in a EuroLeague game with 16 against Maccabi on December 10, 2009.
