THE TAKE

Panellinios BC hosts Cajasol Sevilla to open Eurocup Last 16 Group L on Tuesday at the Lamia Arena in a matchup that showcases two teams with plenty of potential in a talent heavy group. Finishing 4-2 and second in Group E in the regular season, Panellinios won its last three games to overcome a poor start to the competition, while Cajasol qualified with a 3-3 record in Group G, where it finished a spot behind champion CEZ Nymburk, thanks to their Week 6 road victory over Hapoel Jerusalem. Panellinios guard Maurice Bailey is the team’s leading scorer at 11 points per game, but backcourt mate Manolis Papamakarios provides a steady force on the perimeter and small forward Joseph Krabbenhoft offers plenty of hustle for a squad that lives off defensive pressure and attacking the boards. Panellinios ranked second in the Eurocup in defensive rebounding thanks to Djuro Ostojic, Evangelos Sklavos and Krabbenhoft. Cajasol has guard Txemi Urtasun leading the charge at 14.2 points per game, but there’s plenty of help in forward Tariq Kirksay’s versatility, Louis Bullock’s silky wrist and Paul Davis’s muscle in the paint. Forward Mindaugas Katelynas can also score in double digits on any given night. Ostojic is a staple inside for Panellinios, which bolstered its frontcourt with the recent acquisitions of center Torin Francis and forward Steven Smith, who started the season with EWE Baskets Oldenburg. Samo Udrih has also proved his worth as a scorer for Panellinios, which was undefeated at home in the previous stage and plays with plenty of confidence, but don’t expect Cajasol to be intimidated after it already won two road games this season.

Quotes Head Coaches

SKOURTOPOULOS, ATHANASIOS
Panellinios BC
"The game against Cajasol Sevilla is very important to us. Cajasol is a strong team but we want to take the first step towards qualification. Our goal is to stop the fast basketball plays Cajasol and impose our own rhythm."
PLAZA, JOAN
Cajasol Sevilla
"For us, being in the Last 16 is already a success. We enter this phase as humble as we can and with the will to learn from the other teams, especially Alba and Benetton, who have been Euroleague teams not long ago. The opportunity to compete at this level is very good for us. Panellinios will be the first obstacle. Theyhave several players with European experience and they are tough at home."

Players

UDRIH, SAMO
Panellinios BC
"Cajasol Sevilla has a very good team but the game is a home and if we are to qualify, we must win all the games at home. I think that defense is what gives us the victory. The game will be tough and we hope to celebrate in the end."

Head Coaches

SKOURTOPOULOS, ATHANASIOS
Panellinios BC
"Unfortunately we did not. We wanted to start with a win but unfortunately with eight players we could not cope with such a game. We came close to taking the game to 68-65 but missed some free throws and missed some attacks that cost us. I am pleased with the effort of the young guys."
PLAZA, JOAN
Cajasol Sevilla
"It was a very important win for us for many reasons. Firstly because we had three games with defeats in a row in the Spanish League and we wanted to get the win to climb and our psychology. It was the first game in the series and we wanted to start winning. We know that Panellinios BC was a very good team last year and reached the Eurocup Finals. We were more calm in overtime, I saw improvement, although we made a mistake and I think the march will go even better."

Players

SKLAVOS, EVANGELOS
Panellinios BC
"We left a bitter outcome because we lost in the details. However, we showed that we are on the rise and we will try to go for all the games. When our players will return we will get stronger and we will show a better image than we have so far."
BULLOCK, LOUIS
Cajasol Sevilla
"It was a very important win for us because it was the first game of the Last 16 and we wanted to start winning. We did, although it was difficult enough. Panellinios BC is a very good team with the additions of new players will get even better in the process. We expect an equally good team and even better in Seville in the second game. We made some mistakes today, but fortunately did not cost us in overtime."
