THE TAKE

Cajasol Sevilla and Alba Berlin clash Tuesday night at the Palacio Municipal de Deportes de San Pablo in Spain in a game for the top of Group L. Cajasol is riding high after breaking Benetton’s seven-game winning streak last week in Sevilla and notching its third victory in a row. Alba Berlin (1-1) defeated Panellinios in Germany last week after suffering their its Eurocup loss in its Last 16 opener the week before. Cajasol’s Paul Davis was last week’s MVP and leads the Last 16 in average performance index rating and is tied for second in rebounding. Veteran guard Louis Bullock is averaging 17 points a game in Last 16 play to lead his team in scoring. They combined for 33 points in last week’s win and will hope to do the same once more. Athletic forward Mindaugas Katelynas, wily all-around stud Tariq Kirksay and sharpshooter Txemi Urtasun can take some of the offensive scoring load off their shoulders too. Alba hopes new head coach Muli Katzurin can duplicate the result of his debut against Panellinios, when the German side came out on top, 68-65, thanks to an impressive performance by guard Julius Jenkins and a solid game by big man Derrick Allen. Guards Immanuel McElroy and Hollis Price should also command some attention from Cajasol’s defense, while Patrcik Femerling is a pillar at center and Tadja Dragicevic can take over games from the forward spot.

PLAZA, JOAN
Cajasol Sevilla
"We are in front of a chance that almost nobody expected and we must try to make the best of it. If we do not get four wins in the Last 16, the win in Greece will be useless for us. Alba will come having lost a game and having suffered in the other so they really want to beat us. They have a new coach and that makes them a Euroleague-level team with new expectations. However, we must think about ourselves and try to do our best during the 40 minutes."

Paul Davis - Cajasol (photo baloncestosevilla.com)Cajasol stayed undefeated in Last 16 Group L and got closer to clinch a Quarterfinals spot by downing Alba Berlin 76-67 in Sevilla, Spain on Tuesday. Cajasol improved to 3-0 and will mathematically make it to the next round if it beats Alba at the O2 World in Berlin, Germany in two weeks' time. Alba dropped to 1-2 and needs to bounce back right away to keep its Quarterfinals options alive. Paul Davis led the winners with 17 points. Tomas Satoransky added 14 on 4-of-4 three-pointers while Tariq Kirksay and Mindaugas Katelynas each had 10 for Cajasol. Patrick Femerling led Alba with 14 points on 7-of-8 two-pointers. Derrick Allen added 11 while Julius Jenkins had 10 for last season's Eurocup finalists. Cajasol opened the game with a 14-2 run but Femerling and Jenkins allowed Alba to rally and get a nine-point lead, 30-39, near halftime. Davis, Satoransky and Katelynas fueled a 22-4 run that Louis Bullock capped with a triple for a 59-46 Cajasol margin late in the third quarter. Nothing changed since that moment, as Cajasol kept a safe lead all the way until the final buzzer.

Kirksay got Cajasol going with a three-pointer and Davis added a layup-plus-foul for a 6-0 lead. Alba committed 3 consecutive turnovers against the hosts' aggressive defense. Meanwhile, Satoransky struck from downtown and fed Katelynas for a jumper that made Alba call timeout at 11-0. Immanuel McElroy stepped up for the guests with a jumper that Davis bettered with a three-point play. Tadija Dragicevic stepped up with a triple and Femerling dunked it to get Alba within 14-7. Kirksay and Bojan Popovic hit free throws but Femerling singlehandedly kept Alba within 18-13. Bryce Taylor followed a jumper with a layup and Jenkins added a three-pointer to give Alba its first lead, 19-20, after 10 minutes. Femerling hit a mid-range shot early in the second quarter but Satoransky answered from downtown for a 22-22 tie. Taylor shined with a three-point play and a jumper by Jenkins soon gave Alba a 24-27 edge. Heiko Schaffartzik followed a jumper with a bomb from downtown to make Cajasol stop the game at 26-32. Marko Marinovic joined the three-point shootout but Davis and Jenkins traded foul shots for a 28-37 score. Davis kept pacing Cajasol with a layup, Yassin Idbihi and Katelynas traded baskets while a buzzer-beating triple by Satoransky brought the hosts within 35-39 at halftime.

Katelynas scored down low immediately after the break but Dragicevic answered from downtown fot a 37-42 score. Cajasol had improved its defense, forcing Alba to go scoreless for more than 3 minutes. Meanwhile, a triple by Kirksay and back-to-back baskets by Katelynas and Txemi Urtasun ignited a 10-0 run that Davis capped with a layup that sent the crowd to their feet at 47-42. Femerling tried to change things with consecutive layups but Satoransky buried his fourth three-pointer, Urtasun added a layup and a put-back basket by Katelynas made Alba call timeout at 54-46. Cajasol was all over the place in defense while free throws by Davis and a triple by Bullock made it a 13-point game, 59-46. Allen followed free throws with a power basket and a jumper by Schaffartzik got the guests within 61-52 after 30 minutes. Dragicevic nailed a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter but Davis and Satoransky kept Cajasol way ahead, 65-55. Allen shined with a layup-plus-foul but free throws by Popovic and Kaloyan Ivanov gave Cajasol a 69-58 edge with over 4 minutes left. Marinovic and Allen took over with consecutive baskets and Jenkins bettered Ivanov's alleyoop layup with a triple for a 71-65 score. More foul shots by Popovic and a buzzer-beating triple by Bullock allowed Cajasol to seal an important win in style.

Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Cajasol Sevilla
"We are very happy to be 3-0 in a difficult competition and in one of the most difficult Last 16 groups, with teams at the Euroleague level and that played the Eurocup Finals last season. Nothing we did will mean anything if we are not able to finish our job. Just a few days after hosting Unicaja in the Spanish League, we will play at home again against Panellinios and need San Pablo to be packed to be able to get our fourth win - if we don't manage to get it in Berlin. Even when we missed easy shots and had our own doubts, we bounced back with a great third quarter that catapulted us. We hope to continue playing well to get a Quarterfinals spot."
KATZURIN, MULI
Alba Berlin
"I want to congratulate Cajasol for the win. We had problems from the beginning of the game, but managed to find our rhythm little by little. The big problem for us is that we committed a lot of turnovers. We have to learn from this loss and work hard. I hope we can win the next game. This is a very difficult group and Cajasol broke it by winning the first game on the road. When you play in a four-team group and win your first game on the road, you get an advantage on everyone else."

Players

DAVIS, PAUL
Cajasol Sevilla
"Alba is one of the best teams in the Last 16. We made mistakes but managed to find the way to solve them and win the game. It is a win, no matter how we played, we are very happy with it. They are a hard team to play against, because they don't have any big guy on the floor sometimes and move very fast. We have managed to win several games in a row and only think to keep playing this way to make it to the Quarterfinals. We are satisfied, practices are good, we are playing well and even when there are moments when we struggle, we find the way to overcome that. We just think to keep working and improving."
FEMERLING, PATRICK
Alba Berlin
"It has been a great game in which we played good basketball against a tough team like Cajasol. We controlled the game most of the way, but made too many mistakes at the end of the first half and had many turnovers after that. We changed the team, but that is no excuse for losing today. We improved with our new coach in the last few games but must keep getting better. We played great basketball in the first half, but didn't do so after the break and this is why we have to improve. We will try to win our last three games to make it to the quarterfinals, but we will take one game at the time, too."
