Darussafaka stuns CSKA, delivers champs’ first loss

There are no undefeated teams left in the 2016-17 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague after Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul defeated reigning champion CSKA Moscow 91-83 at home on Wednesday. Darussafaka improved to 5-2, while CSKA still leads the standings with a 6-1 record. James Anderson led the winners with 20 points on 5-of-9 three-point shooting. Brad Wanamaker collected 18 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals, Will Clyburn added 14 points and Adrien Moerman 11. Cory Higgins and Nando De Colo led CSKA with 17 points apiece. Milos Teodosic added 15 and 10 assists, while Kyle Hines had 11 points and 8 rebounds for the visitors. Darussafaka made 10 of 21 three-point shots (47.6%) and forced CSKA into 18 turnovers.

CSKA struggled to score early, while Semih Erden and Anderson combined for 9 points in a 13-0 opening run that caused Coach Dimitris Itoudis to stop the game. Hines got CSKA going with a put-back layup and Higgins struck from downtown, but Anderson kept Darussafaka far ahead, 18-5. Wanamaker finished a 6-0 run with a dunk that made it a 17-point game. Higgins pushed CSKA and got help from De Colo and Nikita Kurbanov to keep the guests within 30-18 after 10 minutes. Wanamaker hit a triple early in the second quarter and an unstoppable Anderson kept Darussafaka in charge at 37-23. Wanamaker and Clyburn stepped up with back-to-back layup-plus-fouls, but James Augustine and Higgins brought CSKA within 45-34. A jumper by Semen Antonov got CSKA within single digits, however Scottie Wilbekin followed a close basket with a driving layup to fix the halftime score at 49-37. Anderson hit one from beyond the arc right after the break, but a three-point play by Teodosic and back-to-back layups by De Colo gave CSKA hope at 55-44. Slaughter rescued Darussafaka with a slam and a jumper by Moerman gave the hosts a 61-51 cushion. Moerman stayed on fire and got help from Birkan Batuk and Wilbekin to break the game open, 73-57, at the end of the third quarter. Three-pointers by Teodosic, Jackson and Victor Khryapa brought CSKA within 73-66 early in the fourth quarter. Vitaly Fridzon and De Colo joined the three-point shootout and a jumper by Higgins got the guests within 4. A jumper by Teodosic and free throws by De Colo made it 84-83 with 1:27 left. Clyburn made free throws and buried a critical three-pointer, which allowed Darussafaka to seal a truly historic win!

BLATT, DAVID
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"We played against a great opponent, and we fought very hard and managed to win a game that means a lot to our club, means a lot to our project. It says a lot about our players. But still, it is only one game. This is a very tough league, and very, very challenging schedule for all teams, particularly Turkish teams, because we do this every week in Turkish League, as well. It just goes to show, if you play hard and play together, you like what you are doing, you have a chance to good things. That’s what happened tonight. First quarter we started with a different kind of lineup, and did so because we felt that we had to fight this battle with different type of weapons. If you just play standard, our chances of winning are not great. We had to do something different. That is why we started a different lineup, played different style. It paid off in the beginning of the game, and that lead really helped because it was hard to maintain a 17-18 difference against such a great team."
ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"Congrats to Darussafaka on the win. They deserved to win. They played better than us. I don't recall many games since I came to CSKA when we had such a bad start and such bad attitude. [Not doing things] like we prepared for. We realized too late how we have to play the game on offense and defense. We won the last three quarters, but that start hurt us. Darussafaka deserved to win."

BATUK, BIRKAN
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"That’s a crucial win against last season’s EuroLeague champions, CSKA. They have many weapons on offense, but we managed to keep them under their season average as we came out with a great team effort and energy on defense. We were able to keep that intensity through 40 minutes. We can say that we are on the right path to becoming a team. We will just get better and better in the upcoming weeks."
WANAMAKER, BRAD
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"It was a total team effort. We had to bounce back from a tough loss [in the Turkish League] this weekend. Will [Clyburn] made some big shots and big plays down the stretch. This win means a great deal for our confidence. Right now, we played against the best team in Europe, the defending champion, and being able to come out and get this win is great."
HIGGINS, CORY
CSKA Moscow
"We almost stole the game, but we can't dig ourselves a hole like we did. We've just got to be ready to play from the very beginning and respect every game and hopefully we'll have a better result."
AUGUSTINE, JAMES
CSKA Moscow
"Well, we didn't start off good. I think that's what killed us. That's the main thing that brought us down. You know, everybody's down, but we have a quick turnaround so we have to be ready to bounce back."
