THE TAKE

Prokom Trefl continues its hunt for a spot in the Top 16 when it hosts RheinEnergie Cologne in Sopot, Poland, on Thursday. Despite losing its last two games, Prokom is 4-7 in Group A and currently holds fifth place – the last spot that guarantees promotion to the Top 16. On the other hand, RheinEnergie (2-7) has dropped six straight to fall to last place in the group and is down to its last chance for survival. The German champs last won against Prokom in November, but the team has undergone a major change since then, as Marcus Faison, who was RheinEnergie's leading scorer and had 22 points that night, has left the team. The rematch features an interesting matchup at center where RheinEnergie's Marcin Gortat, a Polish national team player, will square off against the Prokom duo of Huseyin Besok and Michael Andersen. Gortat (10.4 ppg., 5.2 rpg., 1.2 bpg.) is coming off his best game of the season with 19 points and 12 boards last week and will be anxious to show friends and family in Poland all of his skills. Meanwhile, Besok (10.6 ppg., 5 rpg.) is one of the best European centers of his generation and Andersen has rediscovered his game in recent weeks. The keys for RheinEnergie are at forward where Devin Green (14.5 ppg.) and reserve Aleksandar Nadjfeji (9 ppg., 3.3 apg.) must excel against Jasmin Hukic (7.4 ppg.), Adam Wojcik (7.5 ppg.) and Tomas Masiulis (4.3 rpg.). The absences of forward Ronnie Burrell (13.1 ppg., 6.3 rpg.) and shooter Mladjen Sljivancanin will not help the guests. On the other side, Prokom's deep backcourt, which features playmakers Justin Hamilton and Rashid Atkins and shooters Christian Dalmau (11 ppg.) and Donatas Slanina (10.5 ppg.), will look to attack Immanuel McElroy (9.4 ppg., 2.9 apg.) and Demond Mallet (11.9 ppg.). Fans can expect a slow-paced affair, but plenty of action in the paint. Ultimately, the battle inside could open up space for the teams' shooters to decide the outcome.

Quotes Head Coaches

KIJEWSKI, EUGENIUSZ
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"This is a very important game, maybe the most important of our whole Euroleague season. We have to win it. No doubt about it. We must not repeat our game form in Germany, where we played really badly. On Thursday, we have to play good defense, and our goal is to stop their fast attack. We have to be careful about their outside players and, of course, Marcin Gortat, who is very good inside player."
OBRADOVIC, SASA
RheinEnergie
"We lost badly in our domestic league, and the way we lost is a reflection of our situation right now, having important players coming back from injuries who are a little bit out of shape. We were always one second late. We need some continuity in practice, and in a couple of weeks we’ll be okay. In Prokom Trefl, we face a good team that in my mind has to be in the next round of the Euroleague. For us, it is important to improve and keep integrating Devin Green to adapt to our game. As of now, our team is not at 100 percent, nor 90, nor even 80."

DALMAU, CHRISTIAN
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"We have no choice. We have to win and prove that we are a better team than RheinEnergie. I know that we lost the first game with them, but at that time we could not keep concentration through the whole game. On Thursday, we have to play our game and make our rival play our game, too. The key will be to stop their transition game. If we do it, I think we will win."
GREEN, DEVIN
RheinEnergie
"It’s just been a couple of weeks in Europe for me so far. There is a high level of basketball here, but very different, and I still have got to get adjusted to the pace of the game and the philosophy around here. But, at the end of the day, it’s still just basketball. So far, I’d give myself a ‘C’. I’m still waiting on my first win in the Euroleague. So far, in every game that I played, we had some key players missing, and we still have got to get used to playing with each other."
Cristian Dalmau - Prokom Trefl Adam Wojcik came off the bench for a season-high 22 points to lead Prokom Trefl to a 72-61 over RheinEnergie Cologne in a Group B encounter in Sopot, Poland. Prokom improved to 5-7 and edged closer to its goal of advancing to the Top 16. RheinEnergie on the other hand dropped to 2-10 and lost any mathematical chance of reaching the next stage. The visitors actually started strong, riding Emmanuel McElroy, Devin Green and Demond Mallet to an 11-19 lead after 10 minutes. RheinEnergie led 33-40 at halftime, but Wojcik and Huseyin Besok led Prokom back for a 53-49 lead after three periods. Wojcik continued to shine in the last 10 minutes leading Prokom to the win. Christian Dalmau added 17 for Prokom, while Besok and Donatas Slanina had 11 apiece. Aleksander Nadjfeji led RheinEnergie with 16 points, 4 assists and 5 steals, McElroy added 14, Marcin Gortat 12 points and 13 rebounds and Mallet finished with 11.

Both teams struggled on offense at the beginning before Marcin Gortat finally opened the score with a point from the line. Hukic responded with a layup that turned out to be Prokom's only lead in the first half. It was 4-4 following Besok's first basket, but then the guests scored 7 points in a row to escape. McElroy, Green and Mallet with a triple were on target during the run, which forced Prokom's first timeout. After that, the hosts still couldn't find their rhythm although Hukic finally scored again. On the other end, however, McElroy and Nadjfeji made sure that RheinEnergie maintained its advantage at 11-19 at the end of the first quarter.

Nadjfeji continued pushing the guests as he opened the second quarter with a three-point play good for a 11-22 lead. Prokom saw the danger and reacted with its first run, 7-0, to close the gap as Wojcik scored twice from the paint and Dalmau added a spectacular triple off a screen. RheinEnergie did not flinch, however, as Mallet hit a triple to ignite a 2-9 response with which the guests reestablished a double-digit advantage, 20-31. A spectacular drive by visiting forward Devin Green earned even ovation from the home supperters and forced another Prokom timeout. The hosts became more efficient on the offensive boards after that, but weren't able to close the gap to fewer than 6 points. Prokom tried zone defense for a while, but it didn't succeed as RheinEnergie's own Polish player, Gortat, dunked over his idol, Wojcik. Finally, Slanina brought some help from the bench and hit a seven-meter triple to close the half with a 33-40 scoreboard in RheinEnergie's favor. Besok and Gortat - Prokom and RheinEnergie

Prokom tightened its defense to start the second half and quickly took control. It forced the game inside, where Wojcik and Besok were on target. Slanina finished the fastbreak that made it 39-40. Prokom would have a few chances to take the lead as Rhein Energie struggled now to find open shots of any kind. The guests did not score for almost 5 minutes until McElroy finally made a layup. But Prokom was ready then with another 7-0 run, ending with an acrobatic drive by Dalmau that gave Prokom its second lead of the evening, 43-42. Dalmau made sure by followed it with a bomb from the left wing, but now Nadjfeji and Mallet reemerged for RheinEnergie with 6 points in a row to put the guests back ahead, 47-48. Prokom needed to gain control of its home court and did so with a 6-1 run ended with another basket by Dalmau that was good for a 53-49 advantage after 30 minutes.

Early in the final quarter, Filip Dylewicz got some important rebounds for Prokom and Rashid Atkins scored an easy fastbreak, but Nadjfeji kept the guests in touch with a pair of layups. With a scoreboard showing 58-57, RheinEnergie had a chance to take the lead, but instead commited a turnover, the break Prokom was looking for. Slanina hit the first jumper in an 8-2 run that gave the hosts control for good, but the go-to guy was the veteran Wojcik, who to pour in 7 consecutive points that left Prokom ahead 67-59 with under 4 minutes left. Green got a quick basket back, but the Prokom defense ruled the rest of the way with a game-ending 5-0 run to push the Polish champs closer to another Top 16 appearance.

Head Coaches

KIJEWSKI, EUGENIUSZ
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"It was a very important step toward the Top 16, but we still need one more victory. The game against Climamio will be decisive. We played two different halves, the first one without defense, and much better the second one. Bad defense cost us the result at the half, when we were down, but the players realized that in the Euroleague, without defense, nobody can win. We improved that, we came back and won."
OBRADOVIC, SASA
RheinEnergie
"Congratulations to Prokom. The hosts used their advantage in the paint, they forced the game inside and we didn't have the answer. We performed without two key players and it was a problems for us. We have troubles with rotation. Down the stretch we were tired. We made 20 turnovers and it was too much to win."

Players

ATKINS, RASHID
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"It was a very tough game for us, we knew that, but for me it was a suprise that the guests played with such intensity. We had problems with that, particurarly at the beginning. After the break, it was much better from our side. That's why we won."
GORTAT, MARCIN
RheinEnergie
"We were trying our best, but Prokom played fantastic defense in the second half. The hosts deserved the victory and the Top 16. For us, the Euroleague season will finish after two more games. I'd like to thank the supporters in Sopot. Their ovation before the game was really nice."
