THE TAKE

Fenerbahce Ulker will make its Euroleague home debut on Wednesday when it hosts Pau-Orthez in Istanbul, Turkey. Both teams played well before losing on opening night and will be looking to avoid an 0-2 start to the season. Fenerbahce lost 66-58 at Aris, while Pau blew a fourth-quarter lead against Winterthur Barcelona and fell 66-72. Fenerbahce's veterans played well, giving the team plenty of hope for this week's encounter. Ibrahim Kutluay drilled four three-pointers on his way to 18 points, Kaspars Kambala added 12 and Mirsad Turkcan produced 10 points and 14 rebounds. Pau's Michael Bauer came off the bench for 17 in his Euroleague debut, while Michael Wright, who spent last season in Turkey with Besiktas, added 14 in 16 minutes. With Wright and point guard Aaron Miles, nether of whom started the season with the club, gaining more practice time, Pau will only become tougher to beat. Wright and Thierry Rupert bring experience to an otherwise rather young Pau frontline, a needed ingredient against the veteran Fenerbahce big men. Ian Mahinmi, who debuted with promise last week, will be needed to put a body on Kambala or Ira Clark and to help keep Turkcan off the glass. One thing that makes Fenerbahce even stronger is its corps of young reserves, like Oguz Savas and Semih Erden. Point guard Will Solomon wasn't at his best for Fenerbahce last week, but matchup with Miles could be crucial on Wednesday. Solomon, Damir Mrsic and Omer Onan make up the Fenerbahce guard rotation that will challenge Miles, C.C. Harrison and Ricardo Greer. Small forward Kutluay remains Fenerbahce's go-to guy, but Britton Johnsen and Bauer will be out to limit his effectiveness. Motivation will surely run high in this game as both teams look for a first victory. The play of young Mahinmi and the speed with which Miles and Wright mesh with their teammates are the two biggest factors for Pau going into the game. Fenerbahce is the favorite for its veteran squad and homecourt advantage, but it still has to prove so on the floor.

Quotes Head Coaches

ORS, AYDIN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"This is going to be the first game in front of our own fans, so we want to give them a good start at home. But the way to victory is clear: we need concentration for the whole 40 minutes. We have to keep our motivation at the highest level for all the game. And of course, we need to reduce our mistakes to a minimum, because in this kind of tough league, mistakes are answered with big punishment on the court. So we will try to be careful, aggressive and patient, and we'll try to feel the harmony of good team defense from the beginning until the end."
HERBERT, GORDON
Pau-Orthez

"We face a team with a spirit of revenge after the game they lost in Thessaloniki last week. It is a strong team with well-known Euroleague players. The danger is the same inside and outside, which is difficult to solve for our defense. We will need a maximum of intensity and
concentration to keep our options."

"We had a bad game against Aris TT Bank and this is a good chance for us to apologize to our fans, by beating Pau-Orthez at home. It’s sure that our fans are a big weapon for us in our home games. But as a team, we have to do our best on the court for the joy of it. Pau-Orthez is one of the traditional teams of the Euroleague and we must never underestimate them. We have the capacity to do everything in this league, but first of all, we have to start playing much better from now on."

RUPERT, THIERRY
Pau-Orthez

"Our capacity to control the rhythm of the game will be very important if we want to stop such a big team. Guys like Kambala, Kutluay, Solomon or Turkcan are used to this kind of game. They lost the first game so they have no more alternatives than to win. Let's go there to give the maximum in terms of determination and agressiveness. Each game is important in this difficult group, so I hope we will be ready."

Michael Wright - Pau-Orthez Pau-Orthez was the protagonist of an upset on Wednesday night as it defeated Fenerbahce Ulker on the road in Istanbul by 66-68 in Group C. Pau lifted its record to 1-1 while Fenerbahce still looks for its first victory after two tries. The game was close throughout all 40 minutes and Ibrahim Kutluay even got the hosts within a point with the last of his 4 three-pointers landing with 6.7 seconds left. But a last free throw by Aaron Miles was enough to secur Pau's first win this season. Michael Wright led Pau back from consistent first-half deficits and finished with 22 points. Clint Harrison added 13 while Britton Johnsen and Ricardo Greer posted 9 apiece. Kutluay was Fenerbahce's best scorer again with 19 points, Will Solomon chipped in 13 and Kaspars Kambala added 12 for the hosts.

Both teams missed a lot of chances to score in the opening minutes of the game, but went back and forth on the scoreboard until Britton Johnsen's three-pointer made it 11-11 midway through the quarter. Fenerbahce soon took control thanks to Kutluay, however. Having already buried a three-pointer, the veteran Fenerbahce scored another among 5 points in a single minute that put the hosts up by 16-13. Pau struggled to defend Kambala now, but Wright and Greer kept the visitors within striking distance for awhile. Kambala hammered in a layup and made the free throw that came with it for a 21-15 score and Fenerbahce's biggest lead yet. He and Damir Mrsic would make 1 of 2 free throws each to extend the difference by the end of the quarter to 23-15.

Ibrahim Kutluay - Fenerbahce UlkerA spectacular dunk by Ira Clark to open the second quarter kept Fenerbahce going, but Pau now tried to stop Fenerbahce by going inside on offense and turning to a zone on defense. The idea of forcing Fenerbahce to shoot from outside worked well for the visitors, who stopped the hosts from scoring any points over 2 minutes. In the meantime, Pau added points until Johnsen's fastbreak layup got his team as back in the game at 25-21. Despite back-to-back-to-back three-pointers by Omer Onan, Kutluay and Willie Solomon, Pau used the defensive mistakes of Fenerbahce, especially inside the paint, to keep breathing down the neck of the hosts. Clint Harrison with free throws and Michael Bauer with a layup got Pau closer still, but Solomon canned another three-pointer before the half ended with Fenerbahce holding a 37-33 margin.

Kambala and Kutluay for Fenerbahce traded baskets with Harrison and Aaron Miles of Pau as the four-point halftime difference was maintained early in the third quarter. Kambala added another layup to up the hosts' edge to 43-37 before Pau made its big move. While the visitors' defense closed down Fenerbahce for several possessions, Wright combined with Bauer and Miles in an 0-7 run that made for a whole new ballgame at 43-43. Clarke regained the lead for Fenerbahce, but Wright answered with 4 more points to take it back before Solomon's jumper tied it, 47-47. But Pau wasn't done and Wright wasn't alone. Ian Mahinmi got loose inside for a go-ahead layup and Johnsen finished the quarter with a dunk that put Pau ahead 47-51 after 30 minutes.

Fenerbahce fired up the home fans to start the final quarter as Clark dunked and Onan drove to the basket to tie, then Solomon drilled a three-pointer to finish a 7-0 run that put the hosts up again, 54-51. But Pau never gave up and despite huge pressure levelled the score at 54-54 on a jumper by Johnsen. Fenerbahce tried to race away again as Mrsic and Kutluay rained down a triple each, but no sooner had they fallen than Harrison put in 4 points to keep Pau close, at 60-58, halfway through the quarter. Wright took over from there, scoring his own 6 points in a row to push Pau in front, 60-64, with just over 2 minutes left. Onan's three-pointer soon restored Fenerbahce's hope at 63-64, but those were his team's last points for awhile. Pau didn't score again either until Wright was fouled and hit 1 of 2 free throws with 25 seconds left. When he missed the second, however, Greer was there to take the rebound to give another chance to Pau. Fenerbahce had to commit 3 quick fouls to get Pau to the free throw line, where Harrison hit a pair to make it 63-67. Kutluay drilled a triple to make it 66-67, but only 6.7 seconds remained, and after Aaron Miles made 1 of 2 free throws, Fenerbahce had too little time to prevent Pau from walking off with a huge 66-68 victory.

Head Coaches

ORS, AYDIN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"First of all, I have to say that we did not expect to lose this game. We we prepared very well and we started the game as planned. We knew that the game wouldn't be easy. They became a very athletic team with Michael Wright. They used Wright at the center position very well. We weren't able to help each other, especially inside. And we made many mistakes on offense. If you keep your opponent at 68 points in this kind of game at home, you should win. We also feel the lack of experience from a few players who are not ready to play in front of big crowds at home. They were nervous and missed some good opportunities. But it will be ok for the future games. There's nothing much to say but to congratulate Pau Orthez."
HERBERT, GORDON
Pau-Orthez
"I think we played excellent defense in the last 30 minutes of the game. In the first period, we struggled defensively, but then we got our defense set and we could run the fast breaks. It's very difficult to play in front of these fans. The crowd is a huge factor, very emotional. So for a young team, I'm very proud that we stayed focused on the game. Michael Wright played very very well. He's just getting back into shape."

Players

KAMBALA, KASPARS
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We lost a game that we must win tonight. The home games are really important in this league, but unfortunately we were not good enough, both on defense and offense. We still need time to play together to become a better team. But at the same time, luck was not on our side tonight. I'm really sad to see our fans unhappy. We will try to do everything we can in the next games."
WRIGHT, MICHAEL
Pau-Orthez
"I knew that there was going to be a lot of pressure from the Fenerbahce fans from my experience with Besiktas Cola Turka last season. We got what we expected here. We had a bad first quarter, but recovered in the second period. We played good defense, played hard especially in the third quarter. Despite starting the last quarter under pressure, we took advantage of Fenerbahce's weak points and that's how we won the game."
