THE TAKE

The post-Tanoka Beard era begins for Zalgiris Kaunas when the club hosts red-hot Union Olimpija Ljubljana on Thursday for a Group A encounter. Beard officially left the club over the weekend after playing parts of six seasons with the Lithuanian champs, but he left the club in good hands with a group of young big men ready to shine. Paulius Jankunas and teenage reserve center Donatas Motiejunas are two players who will see more playing time as a direct result of Beard leaving. The club enters the game with a 1-2 record, but more importantly has won its lone home game to date and is only one victory behind the five teams tied for the group lead. Olimpija is one of those five after taking back-to-back stunners over Final Four contenders Olympiacos and CSKA Moscow in the last two weeks. Though head coach Memi Becirovic's side is based on young talents, it has been veteran forwards Marko Milic and Jasmin Hukic who had led the team to it's surprising start. By the numbers, Olimpija has not done what it takes to be a winning team, but the team's spirit more than makes up for that, as players like young point guard Goran Dragic, big man Miha Zupan and the athletic Ronnie Taylor have come through when needed. Meanwhile Zalgiris presents a big challenge for Olimpija's big men as the top rebounding team in the league. The team's weakness though has been ball-handling, as it also leads the league in turnovers committed. Point guard De Juan Collins is the focal point of the Zalgiris attack, while center Eureljus Zukauskas can also set others up from the low post. Forwards Jonas Maciulis and Goran Jurak and explosive reserve guard Marko Popovic are head coach Rimantas Grigas's top scorers. Shooting guard Marcus Brown is one big night away from taking over as the Euroleague's alltime leading scorer. If Brown puts up 20 on Thursday, he'll regain that title from Luis Scola, the current leader with 2054 career points. The two classic Euroleague squads have met numerous times over the years. Zalgiris won the last two by sweeping the season series in the 2005-06 season, but Olimpija still leads the overall head-to-head tally 9-3. Expect the unexpected, as Olimpija seeks an important road win that will show that this club is a real contender, while Zalgiris fights for a crucial home win to stay on pace for a spot in the Top 16.

Zalgiris Kaunas head coach, Rimantas Grigas
"Union Olimpija is a very motivated team. They are very energetic both on defense and offense. I would say they are better on the defensive end, as their offense sometimes seems to be stagnant. But they are a very ambitious team. They have both experienced players and young Slovenian talents. I would say the three main weapons in this team are Marko Milic, Goran Dragic and Jasmin Hukic. Our players Eurelijus Zukauskas and Dainius Salenga missed last weekend’s games due to minor injury and illness, but they will be back in action on Thursday. We have one Slovenian player, Goran Jurak, so he gave us some advice about Union Olimpija, about their defense and players. Marko Popovic also knows that system quite well so he helped us as well."

Zalgiris Kaunas forward, Goran Jurak
"I am happy to meet my ex-teammates, but on the court there will be no friends, only players, and I want to beat them. I haven’t talked to Olimpija players this week, because I want to concentrate only on the game, but we talked last week, when they played against CSKA. Olimpija at the moment is in a good shape, they won against strong teams. But we play at home, where we have fan support and we expect to win. I think the [Olimpija] team itself is the most dangerous, but they have three key players: Jasmin Hukic, who can open the floor with his shooting, Marko Milic, who is the motor of the team and the most experienced player, and Goran Dragic, who is a young and very talented player."

Union Olimpija Ljubljana head coach, Memi Becirovic
"We are facing a series of difficult games. I have spoken with the players and all are committed to giving their maximum. We travel to Kaunas with mixed emotions, since we played so bad in our last away game at Siena. History should not repeat itself and I am conviced we'll play better than we did against Montepaschi. Zalgiris at home is always a team to be feared, and for that reason, we'll have respect for our opponent."

Union Olimpija Ljubljana center, Chris Booker
"This is our second game away from home. Our memories of the first one are ugly, so we'll go to Kaunas with the idea of playing a better game than we did in Siena. After winning two in a row at home, we have to give our all against Zalgiris and show our fans that we know how to play well away from Hala Tivoli as well."

De Juan Collins - Zalgiris Kaunas On a record-breaking night for one of its players, Zalgiris joined a knot of four teams in the middle of Group A by blowing away red-hot Union Olimpija 91-72 on Thursday in Kaunas, Lithuania. Marcus Brown led the winners with 28 points that vaulted him to the top of the Euroleague's all-time scoring list, with 2,063 points. With a jump shot soon after halftime, Brown surpassed Luis Scola, who had been first with 2,054 points. The outcome left both Zalgiris and Olimpija with 2-2 records, part of a four-way tie for third place in the group. Brown's explosive scoring on either side halftime put Zalgiris in charge with double-digit leads that the hosts refused to give up easily after that. To his scoring barrage, Brown added 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Dainius Salenga and DeJuan Collins added 17 points each for the winners and Jonas Maciulis 12. Collins also dished 8 assists. Marko Milic scored 14 of his team-high 21 points in the first quarter for Olimpija and also pulled 11 rebounds. Ronell Taylor followed him with 18 points and Maurice Bailey with 13.

Olimpija started with confidence as Mirza Begic blocked the first Zalgiris layup attempt, while Milic and Taylor drove inside for layups and a quick 0-4 advantage. That woke up the hosts, who responded by tying on a long jumper by Paulius Jankunas and free throws by Collins. Milic provided a highlight with a two-handed breakaway dunk, worth as much as the next mid-range jumper by Collins. Brown got going by hitting a corner jumper and assisting Jankunas on a fastbreak dunk. Brown then nailed a triple before Maciulis also dunked, forcing Olimpija's first timeout. The visitors tightened up their defense and used 5 unanswered points shared by Milic and Bailey to close within 19-17. Goran Jurak hit 1 of 2 free throws for Zalgiris before Taylor and Milic, the latter with 14 points already, scored inside. Brown got his rhythm too, however, and finished the first quarter with a jumper that put Zalgiris ahead at 25-22.

Maurice Bailey - Union OlimpijaBailey's coast-to-coast layup to start the second quarter was answered by Marko Popovic drilling a triple to extend the Zalgiris lead to 28-22. Milic remained unstoppable, however, scoring back-to-back baskets to keep Olimpija close enough that Sas Doncic's easy layup off a steal returned the lead back to the visitors at 28-30. Bailey and Jasmin Hukic added back-to-back bombs from the downtown for Olimpija, but Dainius Salenga and Collins bettered them by combining for 8 points. After strong defense by Zalgiris forced Olimpija into a shot-clock violation, Brown got the lead back for the hosts with a basket that made it 37-36. Collins, with nice penetration, and Maciulis, with a difficult fadeaway jumper, boosted the margin. Brown continued the Zalgiris assault as he drove for a basket-plus-free throw and shot the lights out with long three-pointer on the very next possession. Olimpija struggled to score until Milic broke the dry spell, but Salenga saved the last word of the first half - a baseline jumper and a fastbreak layup that meant a double-diogit 54-42 advantage for Zalgiris at halftime.

Olimpija struggled to start the second half, taking another shot-clock violation, while Brown hit the jumper that made him the Euroleague's all-time top scorer. That didn't slowed down the veteran, as he drilled from downtown on his next try. Jankunas added a put-back basket and an open mid-range jumper as the Zalgiris defense did its job, too, and the advantage climbed. When a wide-open Maciulis buried his next shot from the arc, the difference was 68-49. A turnover by Collins was converted into a spectacular dunk by Taylor. Hazan Rizvic hit from under the basket after fake move and Taylor added difficult three-pointer as Olimpija started to come back. The visitors' outside shooting started to pay off as Bailey nailed a triple and Hukic added a free throw as the third quarter closed with a 70-59 scoreboard.

Goran Jurak and Marcus Brown - Zalgiris KaunasPopovic started the final quarter with a baseline drive that Rzivic matched with a layup. Maciulis hit a jumper off the dribble, but Milic and Bailey got the next 3 points from the line for Olimpija. Zalgiris, angered at an intentional foul call that sent Popovic to the bench, responded with back-to-back triples by Salenga and Brown that charged up the crowd. Olimpija called for a timeout after which Taylor got a layup and Bailey a jumper before Salenga hit free throws. Taylor found enough free space under the Zalgiris basket to make another put-back, but Olimpija couldn't unlock the rim from the outside, even on open shots. Meanwhile, Collins grabbed an offensive rebound and dished an excellent assist to Salenga, whose subsequent in-your-face dunk on the baseline told the crowd all it needed to know. Collins played the final note with another dunk before the buzzer that announced a second Group A victory for hosts, 91-72.

Head Coaches

GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
“I am very happy that we won. Despite the fact that we built a solid lead at the end, it was a tough game. We stopped their leaders while our key players played well and contributed. Our biggest problem so far was that we used to get too slowly back on defense. Tonight we eliminated this problem. Marcus Brown played as real sharpshooter and all the team worked for him, he was not freezed out. I hope he will be playing better and better with every game. He has to keep playing on a high level.”

Players

COLLINS, DeJUAN
Zalgiris
“Pretty much for the whole game we had control in our hands. Our fans gave us a good welcome. In the absence of Tanoka, Zukauskas did a hell of a job. Congratulations to our coaches and staff.”
BROWN, MARCUS
Zalgiris
“We played good as a team. I played aggressively tonight and it paid off. I didn’t play good in previous games because I tried to find my rhythm. Now I am more comfortable with the team and my game will improve. I’m very proud of the guys and the way we played and the way we concentrated tonight. We rebounded well and shot the ball well. As long as the team wins, individual performances aren't important.”
TAYLOR, RONELL
Union Olimpija
“In the second quarter they got more aggressive, they were doing everything right and we were doing everything wrong. They are fast break team, and though we tried to slow them down, we didn't manage that. Of course, this is a tough loss, but we have to forget it and get ready for the next game. We are working alright and we have to continue doing the same thing and we will be alright.”
