THE TAKE

Cedevita Zagreb hosts Adecco Estudiantes Wednesday night in Croatia for Game 1 of their Eurocup quarterfinals matchup, as two of the tournament’s most exciting teams go head-to-head. Estudiantes’ traditional fast-paced and offensively-aggressive basketball style ranked third in scoring in the Last 16 and is in full bloom with players like dynamic shooting guard Pancho Jasen and playmakers Jayson Granger and Albert Oliver pushing the tempo. Jasen plays with a high motor at both ends of the floor and will have to go full throttle against the likes of playmaker Dontaye Draper and big-time scorer Bracey Wright, as Cedevita was number one in Last 16 scoring and excels in the high-pick-and-roll offense. The Croatian club has made quite a splash with high-voltage games in its first Eurocup season and veteran head coach Aca Petrovic has put together a talented group that has played without fear throughout the tournament. Forward Damjan Rudez has had some big games, especially from three-point range, where Cedevita led all Last 16 squads making 69 of 162 attempts, but center Corsley Edwards allows for balance with his 12.9-point and 7-rebound-per-game average. Vedran Princ and Franko Kastropil also help out on the boards, while Robert Troha, Marino Bazdaric and Vedran Vukusic can spread the floor with their long-range shooting. If Estudiantes hopes to stop the visitors’ four-game winning streak, big man Josh Asselin and returning German Gabriel will have to be involved, although high-scoring forward Nik Caner-Medley has been leading the scoring charge, with Daniel Clark also contributing in many areas. Neither team is likely to abandon the style that has gotten them this far, so all signs point to an exciting and high-scoring matchup that should be fun to watch for fans and players alike.

Quotes Head Coaches

PETROVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Cedevita Zagreb
"Defensively, Estudiantes is quite similar to Gran Canaria - and we played two good matches against them, beating them twice. One of our strongest weapons is defending the pick-and-roll. Unfortunately, Andrija Zizic is not registered to play, Corsley Edwards is unavailable while Vedran Vukusic will not practice before the game. These are big problems, but we reached the Quarterfinals and want to have a good game in Zagreb to keep our options to win the series in Game 2 in Madrid. A small lead or deficit is acceptable. We cannot pretend to win the series if we go to Madrid with a 20-point deficit."

Players

BAZDARIC, MARINO
Cedevita Zagreb
"We are waiting for two big games. We have already done a great job in the Eurocup and anything extra happening will be a big plus for us. Despite out injury problems, I think we can battle against Estudiantes. We will give everything we have and I hope our fans will be there to givbe us extra strength in our attempt to beat Estudiantes. We have already proved that we can beat anyone. We have great offensive talent and a strong defense. If we have a good defensive game, we will be close to make it to the Finals."
JASEN, HERNAN
Asefa Estudiantes
"We have this game and the series with a lot of excitement. This is the most important part of the season and as far as the Eurocup, we really want to be in the Eurocup Finals in Treviso next month. Cedevita has several former Spanish League players like Wright, Bazdaric or Edwards, as well as a lot of players with talent and experience. They will not be an easy opponent, but more like the other way around. This is why they are in the Quarterfinals. We don't know what kind of atmosphere we will find, nobody knows. It is Cedevita's first Eurocup season so I guess their fans are excited to help their team to make it to the Finals."
Dontaye Draper - Cedevita Zagreb (photo Cedevita)Cedevita Zagreb defeated Asefa Estudiantes 90-81 Wednesday night at the Drazen Petrovic Basketball Center in the Croatian capital to get within one step of the Eurocup Finals in Treviso. The 9-point win by Cedevita means Estudiantes will have to make up the difference next Wednesday in Madrid for the second and definitive quarterfinals game between the teams. The hosts trailed by double figures in the first half, but took over in the third quarter and held on for a crucial win. Cedevita’s victory was its 5th in a row in the competition and broke a 3-game winning streak for Estu. Forward Damjan Rudez paced the winners with 21 points, while point guard Dontaye Draper added 20 to go with 5 assists and 3 steals, Marino Bazdaric scored 14 and Vedran Vukusic 10. The visitors were led by Nik Caner-Medlay’s 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Sergio Sanchez added 13 points and German Gabriel scored 11 and grabbed 9 boards in defeat. Game 2 will be played next Wednesday night at the Palacio Vistalegre in Madrid.

Draper started the game at full speed with a layup and triple and Cedevita quickly demonstrated why it finished No. 1 in three-point shooting in the Last 16 as Rudez added another before Caner-Medley and Sergio Sanchez answered from long range for Estudiantes. The visitors showed they could dance with the hosts’ up-tempo game and capped a 4-11 run with a Josh Asselin dunk and Jayson Granger penetration layup before Rudez scored on a running hook to set the score at 16-21. In what was expected to be a wide-open game, Caner-Medley provided some interior toughness for Estudiantes and he and Sanchez scored on back-to-back three-point plays before Granger assisted Tyrone Ellis on a fasbreak layup. Draper swished a triple to close the quarter at 21-33 after a couple of Caner-Medley free throws as time expired.

Nik Caner-Medley - Asefa Estudiantes (photo Cedevita)Cedevita went inside early to start the second quarter and found Franko Kastropil on a backdoor cut for an easy two-pointer. But Estudiantes countered by getting Gabriel involved in the paint, as the Spanish team kept the hosts at bay with Hernan Jasen’s first bucket of the night, a step-in triple, and a Caner-Medley layup to stretch the lead to 23-40. Cedevita kept moving the ball crisply on offense, but the open perimeter looks weren’t falling, while head coach Luis Casimiro’s crew capitalized on a more-balanced attack with good positioning and passing near the rim. The hosts finally nailed consecutive long-range bombs by Robert Troha and Rudez, and added a Vedran Princ layup to close in at 35-45. Suddenly, Estudiantes was having trouble scoring against Cedevita’s tight defensive, and the hosts strung 10 unanswered points to get to within 5 before Gabriel hit a cutting Jiri Welsch for a basket. The Croatian squad finally got to the line on a Vukusic drive, and the forward capitalized to make it a one-possession game before Troha added another free throw to reach halftime at 47-49.

Marino Bazdaric finally hit the bottom of the net with a triple after the break and with the game within reach Cedevita seemed to settle down and play more patiently on offense. Draper put them back in the driver’s seat for the first time since the opening quarter with a couple of free throws in a 10-0 run. Sanchez again answered the call for the visitors with a much-needed three-pointer, but Aca Petrovic’s crew was determined not to let the lead slip away and combined its perimeter shooting with persistent basket penetration by the likes of Vukusic and Rudez. Draper dropped a long-range bomb with a hand in his face to make it a double-digit lead at 64-54 and Bazdaric made it a 12-point affair before Jasen closed the 9-0 run with a jumper. The visitors tried to counter the Cedevita offensive barrage with some inside looks, but Cedevita sealed the paint and only Caner-Medley gave his team a spark with a gutsy three-point play before the Jasen fouled out with his 5th personal and the final quarter was reached at 76-61 after a 29-12 trouncing by Cedevita in the period.

With 10 minutes to go, Estudiantes tried to slow the game down in order to keep the result in the low-scoring numbers with hopes to make up the difference in the return game in Madrid. As Cedevita keyed in on Gabriel in the post, Ellis dropped a triple and 4 quick points by Albert Oliver made for a 7-12 start that forced Petrovic to use a timeout. A spectacular diving layup by Bracey Wright got the home crowd on its feet again, as the teams traded blows, with Gabriel finally dropped a turnaround and Asselin converted on a gorgeous no-look pass from Welsch to get the visitors within 82-74 at the 3:30 mark. With Luis Casimiro’s crew managing to control the tempo in the final quarter, Cedevita struggled to heat up again until Tomislav Petrovic swished a corner three-pointer and Draper scored on a beautiful bank-in penetration bucket to put his team ahead, 88-79 in the game’s final minute. With Game 2 looming, both contenders focused on getting maximum results from their last possessions, but only Rudez was able to hit the bottom of the net on a long two-pointer, and the stage was set for the definitive game with Cedevita arriving with a 9-point edge.

Head Coaches

PETROVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Cedevita Zagreb
"We played in a fantastic atmosphere, but what is more important is we refused to give up when we were down by 17. The main reason for this deficit was an injury to Vukusic, who needed some more time to warm up due to his injury. Once he got into his rhythm and we started defending their pick-and-roll differently, we started to catch up. The third quarter was unforgettable, we got to a 16-point lead, but you have to be aware that we could not play on such a high level the entire 40 minutes. This victory is a great advantage for the return game, but nothing can guarantee us it will be us going to the Finals."
PALOMO, LUIS CASIMIRO
Asefa Estudiantes
"It was a nice game with a lot of people in the gym. The game had two different halves. The first was good for us, we passed and shot the ball well, but in the second it was difficult. We are behind 9 points, but that is possible to overcome. Cedevita is a good team and it is difficult to defend them with their three-point shooting and their point guard Draper, who is strong in penetration and passing the ball. There is a reason Cedevita is in the Eurocup Quarterfinals."

Players

PETROVIC, TOMISLAV
Cedevita Zagreb
"This was a very important game for us, and this was a very interesting game. I am glad that I have experienced playing in front of a full Drazen Petrovic Arena. It was unbelievable. We had problems in the first half when they went up by 17 points, but in the second half it was a whole different story. We deserved to win, but this is only a first step. Now we have to win in Madrid too. Yes, we have 9 points to spare, but we cannot think about that game like that. We have to go and win it too."
CANER-MEDLEY, NIK
Asefa Estudiantes
"They shoot the ball incredibly well. They got hot, got some momentum going and we let that 17-point lead slip away. Their guards got them going. They get to the hoop or shot threes from the corner. But 9 points is doable. We have a great home court, it is a tough place to play and we know their team now and know what to do to cover the 9-point deficit. There are still 40 minutes to go."
