THE TAKE

The curtain is rising on the final act of a season that has changed European basketball. The perfect stage is set: Game 5 of the Finals before 8,278 rabid fans at Palamalaguti Arena in Bologna, Italy, known proudly as Basket City. On Thursday night starting with the tipoff at 20:30 local time (CET), host Kinder Bologna and visiting Tau Ceramica of Spain will write their own ending. Regardless of the final score, each will have done its part in lifting pro basketball in Europe to a new level. But only one can be champion. They have dealt each other knockout blows through four games to end up tied 2-2. Now, everyone is expecting just the opposite in Game 5, a nailbiter that will keep us guessing about a champion until the final shot. A close ending would seem to favor Kinder, which enjoys the home court advantage and a deeper bench. But only five players can perform at one time and Tau is a marvel playing on the road. All of which promises drama of the first quality, Kinder and Tau battling for 40 exhilirating minutes on Thursday night with the Euroleague title awaiting one of them at the final buzzer. It doesn't get any better than this. May the best team win.

Forget about tactics, according to everyone on both teams. This is about heart. And how can that heart be measured? Two plays from the first four games spring to mind. First, the third quarter tipoff in Game 3, in which Kinder swingman Emanuel Ginobili had already shone before halftime to give his team a big lead. Now, he wanted that ball again. And as the tipoff ricocheted toward one Tau player and another, he arrived an instant before, tipping the ball away and chasing it down again. When Ginobili finally put his hands on the ball, he was close to scoring, but flipped it sideways to Alessandrio Abbio for a layup. The prospect of a Tau comeback was silenced with that play, and Kinder won going away.

The second play is none other than The Dunk in the second quarter of Game 4 by Mindaugas Timinskas. In Vitoria, Spain they will talk for years to come of how Timinskas rose over the storied Kinder defense and seemed to stuff it down the hoop along with the ball. It was a symbolic play. Against all predictions, a Tau bench player had taken over the game. And no amount of attention from that Kinder defense stopped him. It was pure determination. It also intimidated Kinder's defense, which proceeded to allow a total of 94 points. Nobody in their right mind, even a Tau fanatic, would have guessed that before the series started.

Unpredictability has been the hallmark of this series, but a few things might be expected of each team will all the chips down this Thursday. Kinder will try to get three players involved early no matter what: center Rashard Griffith, swingman Emanuel Ginobili and point guard Marko Jaric. As usual, Griffith will get the ball, but don't expect him to shoot each time. Coach Ettore Messina loves Griffith's passing, and Kinder needs that to set up Marko Jaric, whose disappearance in Game 4 was a huge negative factor. Like many point guards, Jaric needs to give up the ball in order to get it back later in position to make something happen. That means his teammates have to be looking for him.

Ginobili, too, will try to warm his scoring engine in the first quarter, but he will likely shoot more selectively under Game 5 conditions, even though his 27 points in Game 3 mark him as one of two players in the series who has taken over a game. Ginobili is a virtuoso on the brink of stardom. The final step is to learn the difference between forcing his talent on the game and letting the game come to him. Ginobili's first quarter may matter, but it isn't likely to matter as much on Thursday his fourth quarter, and not nearly as much as ensuring that his teammates come along for the ride with him.

One Kinder player who doesn't require an early start is Antoine Rigaudeau, who missed three practices until Wednesday with fever and flu, but is expected to play. Rigaudeau stands out precisely because he needs no special treatment on the court. He takes care of himself. But of course he needs the ball. Whether his teammates make sure to include others first, they have to look for Rigaudeau throughout the game, because there may be no player on either team who has a better sense of the moment. As for the benches, Tau's biggest problem has been the veteran Alessandro Abbio, who steps on to fill whatever gap appears in Kinder's perimeter game. Don't be surprised to see Abbio on the court when it matters most Thursday.

Almost any of the Kinder players mentioned - Ginobili, Rigaudeau, Griffith, Jaric and Abbio - is an MVP candidate, but when it comes to Tau, two players stand out as the lead actors, Elmer Bennett and Victor Alexander. Playing the point guard and center spots, respectively, Bennett and Alexander have given Tau surety in the two strategic positions. Bennett's 40-minute reliability in each game despite extreme pressure from Kinder allows Tau's other players to do their jobs better. Meanwhile, Alexander's reliability underneath, both as a scorer who occupies Griffith's attention and a rebounding force, accounts for another great source of confidence in Tau. To be able to say that Alexander practically cancels out Griffith and Bennett is winning his matchup with Marko Jaric means, for Tau fans, that two-fifths of the battle is won.

That's why so much attention is played to the other three-fifths of Tau's lineup. Starting off-guard Laurent Foirest turned his right ankle in practice on Tuesday and may be hobbled in Game 5. Foirest was key to the upset victory in the opener, but without his three-point shot since, has been relied on mostly for his stellar defense. If he can hit a few shots in Game 5 - and they need not be three-pointers - Tau will be much better for it. Sharp-shooting forward Saulius Stombergas continues to be unpredictable, but his defense outside of Game 3 has not hurt Tau, so he has remained on the court as a potential game-breaker. But to break games he must also shoot, and that requires getting open and pulling the trigger, especially playing on the road. Stombergas is the one Tau player whose early scoring could change the equation for the visitors.

That leaves Timinskas, the supersub for either Foirest or Stombergas, and the powerforward duo of Fabricio Oberto and Luis Scola. Timinskas was key in the Game 1 victory and absolutely huge in Game 4. His minutes were down for some reason in Game 2, and in Game 3 he didn't stop Ginobili, either, though perhaps no one could have. The mix of minutes between him, Foirest and Stombergas is a key part of Tau's chemistry. At power forward, Oberto's first strong game coincided with Tau's Game 4 resurrection, while Scola's spark off the bench throughout the series has only been mitigated by his over-anxious fouling. The power forward is a matchup that Tau could win or lose, and it depends on how smart the Argentine duo of Oberto and Scola play. Oberto's talent for rebounding is unquestioned, as is Scola's for scoring. As such, the measure of their effectiveness is in how many mistakes - namely fouls and turnovers - they can avoid.

So there you have it, the stage, the set and the stars. It's up to the actors now. Expect 40 minutes of the best basketball available anywhere on the planet. Unless, of course, we go to overtime.

Quotes Head Coaches

MESSINA, ETTORE
Kinder Bologna
"It's possible that this game will be more equal than the others, but I can't say for sure because there are no rules in this series. We're ready to play a good game. If Tau wants to beat us, they'll have to be ready to play a great game. And then if they beat us, we can only congratulate them. Among the six games we've played against them this season, in the two we've lost there have been a couple things that influenced us mentally. Game 1, we had the absence of Rashard Griffith. In Game 4, after spending our physical strength to win the Italian Cup and Game 3, we had the festival atmosphere of one more game to win it all. That cost us. Now the team is ready. We only have Antoine Rigaudeau getting over the fever he has had. We have matured this year with the five games we have played against Paf, each one like a university exam. As for the public, they always demand a lot and Tau is going to feel a high level of pressure. Do we have a bench advantage? Well, yes, I try to use 9 or 10 players, but sometimes it works and sometimes not. We've tried to use that theoretical advantage from the first game of this series, but there are no guarantees. Finally, I recognize that there is some fear of losing. That's normal and logical, considering how important the game is."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"I think we are quite well prepared for this game. There are small problems, like an ankle twist that Foirest suffered in our practice on Tuesday, but I expect he'll be able to play and everything will be fine. Now, we have to think that every player must play with his heart for 40 minutes, but keep his head clear. This will also be the most important game of my career as a coach, the final of the strongest league. For the club, it's the same. Arriving at the final game with a chance to win is a great success. If we don't defend well, it will be difficult to win. If both teams defend well and they are both prepared well mentally, maybe the individual skill of one player can make a difference. I'm sure that Kinder's perimeter defense on our guys will be very tough, but the inspiration of one player at the right moments can be decisive, I think. There's no reason to be nervous playing in the Finals, just when you are not playing in them. Fear? There is none. In sports, you can win or you can lose, and you have to accept that fact. If you have that straight, you won't be afraid to play in the final game of the season."

Players

GINOBILI, EMANUEL

"In the fourth game, Tau was very angry after losing the third one. We stepped on the court very soft, and we didn't play defense as before. We were very bad, they were very good, and the truth is somewhere in between. The fact is the team that has shot better three-pointers in the first four games has won. It depens on what kind of shots you allow them to take. If we get our hands in the faces of Tau's shooters, we don't know what they'll do. I don't know what to expect. One of the players who can help Tau is Oberto, who's playing well in last months. He always helps with rebounds and with switches on defense, the work you don't see in the stat shet. But I don't think individuals will decide the game. I only ask the usual suppport from our fans, and that they let Tau know that we are playing in Bologna."
ABBIO, ALESSANDRO
Kinder Bologna
"In Game 5, it will be important for us to dictate the play, or to avoid that Tau dictates it. There is a lot to play for, even after we have won one title, the Italian Cup. The Euroleauge is more important, the most important for our prestige. We don't have to think about the two games we lost. We have to be opportunisitic. I don't think there is a big gap between us and Tau, but I think we have a 51 percent chance to win, playing at home. We have to exploit that one percent more. The key is the defense, of course. On these occasions, playing tough defense is a must. The expectations are high for the fans and the players. We have to avoid our mistakes from the first and fourth games. We expected in the fourth game a team ready to give up, but Tau didn't give up. They gave all they had on the court and we didn't. Now, we can't afford not to."
JARIC, MARKO
Kinder Bologna
"The mistake we all made after third game in Vitoria was thinking we were finished our work and that we winning the fourth one was only a formality. Everyone in the press talked about us as champions already. We lacked concentration and we can't play without it this time.
It is normal to feel pressure, as we play at the highest level, but we have to get used to it. We have the homecourt advantage, and we have to exploit it. The key will be the defense on their drives inside, most of all on Bennet's. Even if he is not a scorer, he is the engine of the team, everything starts from him. Maybe I'll try to exploit the mismatch against him, but I saw they always double team on us in those situations. Maybe I'll be able to make some more assists. However, I feel these kinds of games are going to be decided by small things."
SCOLA, LUIS
Tau Ceramica
"This is the most important game of the season. We all expected to be here, and I expect that now it will come out well for us. I don't have any special feelings yet, but maybe as the game gets closer, I will. There won't be any surprises. It will be a very tough game that will be decided at the finish. We can't let them, and they can't let us, get any sizable leads. Every time that has happened in the previous games, that team has won by a lot."
OBERTO, FABRICIO
Tau Ceramica
"It's going to be a very interesting fifth game, the most important game we have played to this point. After last Thursday in Game 4, I'd say we are the favorites if the game developes along the same lines. But it's just as possible that this game is played differently. We have to have a lot of heart, but play with our minds clear. Any other way, and in the difficult moments you can lose control, and that can't happen."
Manu Ginobili - Kinder Bologna - Euroleague 2000-01 The team that refused to lose throughout this revolutionary season made European basketball history on Thursday with a commanding 82-74 victory in Game 5 of the Finals against Tau Ceramica. Kinder's third win in the best-of-five Finals allowed coach Ettore Messina and his players to lift the championship trophy at center court without a doubt about their deservedness to be called the best team in Europe this season. Kinder posted the Euroleague's best regular season record, 9-1, and outdid itself with a 11-2 run against four elite opponents in the playoffs. Its intense, full-speed team play fuelled Kinder's success since October, and the Game 5 tie-breaker in the Finals was no exception. Perimeter stars Emanuel Ginobili, who was the unanimous MVP with 16 points, and Antoine Rigaudeau, who led his team with 18 points, took turns lifting up Kinder in the middle quarters. "I'm so happy, but it's not so important that I'm the MVP," said Ginobili. "I'm happy for our victory. We are a great team, we keep together well and my MVP award, it's secondary." Sub forward Matjaz Smodis was Thursday's timely star off the bench, scoring the last five points of the third quarter to fend off Tau's best comeback attempt. It all added up to a title-clinching performance for the 2000-2001 Euroleague champs: Kinder Bologna! "We have played under enormous psychological pressure, but we've been able to withstand everything and win this great title," coach Ettore Messina said. "I'm very proud of my players because they are very young."

A stellar all-court performance by a team that doesn't mind sharing the load was again the key for Kinder, whose four main starters all coincided with solid scoring games. Point guard Marko Jaric added 16 points, including 8 of 12 free throws, while center Rashard Griffith registered a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Griffith joined Ginobili and Rigaudeau on the all-Finals team for Kinder while Elmer Bennett (24 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists) and Victor Alexander were chosen for Tau, whose 19 of 34 shooting at the foulline didn't help the cause. Perhaps the most interesting statistic on Thursday were the fouls, which seemed to keep Tau in trouble constantly. As it turned out, both teams were called for 30 fouls each, but it was less notable for Kinder because of its deep bench.

Elmer Bennett - Tau Ceramica - Euroleague 2000-01Kinder started on the right foot, with a three-point play by Griffith that opened the scoring and a triple from outside by Rigaudeau. Two more inside baskets by Griffith and Alessandro Frosini made it 10-3 and forced Tau coach Dusko Ivanovic to call timeout. Ginobili, who had missed a dunk earlier, drove for a basket to make it 12-5, but then a rash of fouls were called affecting key players. First Bennett was called for his second, but he stayed on the court. Then Rigaudeau and Griffith got two fouls each for Kinder, and they were replaced by David Andersen and Alessandro Abbio, respectively. No sooner did they leave the court than Saulius Stombergas hit Tau's first three-pointer, but missed the additional free throw given on a foul by Abbio. Next up, Fabricio Oberto and Victor Alexander scored on the inside, the former on an offensive rebound. Oberto would put back another one to cut the lead again, and Laurent Foirest completed Tau's surge with a three-pointer at the buzzer. Kinder's lead was down to 19-18, and the battle was joined.

To start the second quarter, with Andersen making his second basket and Rigaudeau back on the floor to make 3 free throws, Kinder got back into a comfort zone at 29-22. That foul on Rigaudeau was also the third by Stombergas, who had just walked back on court. After a Tau timeout, fouls soon became a big issue for the visitors. No sooner was Tau out of the huddle than Foirest committed two more fouls, his third and fourth. And no sooner had he left than Stombergas returned and was called for his fourth. Foul trouble on its entire perimeter (Bennett and Timinskas 2 each, Stombergas and Foirest 4 each) halfway through the second quarter was not a good sign for Tau. Niether was its total of six points in 6 minutes and a 33-24 deficit. Tau had to look to Alexander and Bennett, and they responded with six points in a minute to pull their team within 36-31. But now it was time for Kinder's one-two punch, Griffith and Ginobili, to respond. With six points on drives and dunks, they bumped the lead back up to eight, at 42-34. Bennett was cut on a foul and had to leave the court for the first time in the whole series, but he returned in time to hit and end-of-the-half buzzer-beating three-pointer that lowered Kinder's lead to 42-37.

Kinder Bologna - Euroleague 2000-01As might have been expected, Ginobili and Bennett led their teams at the half with 11 points each. Griffith was a perfect 3 for 3 from the field and the foulline for 8 points to go with 6 rebounds, more than any player on the floor. Tau was only in striking distance thanks to its 8-2 edge in offensive rebounds (3 by Oberto) and by virtue of having made 3 three-pointers to just 1 for Kinder. Things could have soured for Kinder early in the second half, however, as Griffith was the victim of a couple whistles, his third and fourth fouls. Tau nudged as close as 44-41 on a fastbreak connection between Bennett and Alexander, but then Rigaudeau, who was also saddled with 3 fouls, took over. He drove the lane for an acrobatic two-pointer then stepped out to nail a three-pointer to boost Kinder's lead into double-digits 52-42. At the same time, Jaric was clamping down defensively on Bennett, blocking his shot at one end and then slamming down an alley-oop dunk to make it 54-44. Now, Foirest went off with his fifth foul and Ginobili struck gold from three-point distance as a Kinder possession expired. The lead was at 13, 57-44.

Only six straight points from Bennett - a three-pointer, a two-pointer and 1 of 2 free throws - saved Tau from sinking towards the end of the third quarter. Kinder coach Ettore Messina needed a timeout, but no sooner did the teams return to the floor than Bennett got a steal and a layup. Just like that, the Tau point guard had his team back within 57-52. But one more weapon was ready on the Kinder side of the court. Matjaz Smodis, the sharpshooting powerforward who even guards centers, had his own ideas, and they included a huge three-pointer and an offensive rebound put back at the buzzer. While Tau was running out of men, Kinder was running new ones out there and giving them the ball. The lead was back to 10, 62-52, going into the fourth quarter, and Kinder's incredible depth was showing dividends.

A stalemate to star the fourth quarter favored Kinder, but a Timinskas three-pointer halfway through gave Tau life at 65-58. But Marko Jaric was as fresh as ever for Kinder and rolled off his own points in response as the lead was back to double-digits, 67-57. Kinder not only had the homecourt now, but the strength and the numbers on its side.

Head Coaches

MESSINA, ETTORE
Kinder Bologna
"We have played under enormous psychological pressure, but we've been able to withstand everything and win this great title. I'm very proud of my players because they are very young and this title reminds me a little of the titles won years ago by Jugoplastika and Partizan, also with very young players. This is also a great success for our club, a club that is very well-organized. This victory is the fruit of that good organization. I am really happy and i hope that this title opens the road to a third one in the Italian League, since we have already won the Italian Cup and the Euroleague."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"Kinder has played a great game, and it is OK they have won. We cannot miss all those free throws and win a game, and also we had too many fouls troubles. I have intelligent players. They all have played a great game tonight and a great series. Now, we have to continue in the Spanish League. Next season, I hope to have the same team to try to conquer the Euroleague again. We lost in Game 2 and Game 3 our real chance too win the title, not tonight. We have played always with a great attitude through all five games, and I appreciate this. In sports you can win or you can lose, and we have to accept the result tonight. You have to know that when your opponent plays better and is a great team, you can lose."

Players

GINOBILI, EMANUEL
Kinder Bologna
"This was the best day of my career. I'm so happy, but it's not so important that I'm the MVP. I'm happy for our victory. We are a great team, we keep together well and my MVP award, it's secondary. I want to thank all my teammates and my coaches for the opportunity to live this fantastic moment. To win the Euroleague is very important for a young team. I'm very proud to be part of Kinder. When you play for this team, you always have to think you play for first place, never for second, but I never expected something like this at the beginning of the season. We could not expect such a large victory tonight. We improved our intensity, and that's what we needed. But I can't believe I'm the MVP, and I don't know if I deserve it. This is a team with no stars. Any player can make the last shot or all the other ones."
SMODIS, MATJAZ
Kinder Bologna
"It was a great night, I know I scored five straight important points, but that's not so important, because everybody has done his part on the floor. Our victory is a team vctory. We have played a great game, a great defense, and now we have to think about the Italian League title. We want to win all!"
RIGAUDEAU, ANTOINE
Kinder Bologna
"We have been working 8 or 9 months for this goal and we did what we had to do in the big game. This is our second title this season, after the Italian Cup. It is not usual to have the chance to win three trophies in a year, but we have the Italian League playoffs coming up, so we have to stay focused. We have to go onward with the same attitude. We have just showed we are the strongest team and that is the best part of all."
ABBIO, ALESSANDRO
Kinder Bologna
"I'm happy to win such a tough series. Tau is a great team. We succeeded in defeating them only after five games. We have already won the Italian Cup and now we have to stay focused on the Italian League title. This is our chance for three and we have to take that opportunity, because you don't find it very often. There was a lot of pressure tonight, especially with the referees, who called the game differently from the first four games. We had to adjust to it. I succeeded in making that adjustment, and we stayed in the lead until the end and took cup home."

"We had problem with fouls and on the perimeter and from the foulline, where we didn't have good percentage, but we played with attitude. Now we have just to think ahead to our Spanish League playoffs. All my teammtes had the desire to win, but we didn't make it. I'm sorry, too, for our fans. We'll try to go win the Spanish League for them."
