THE TAKE

Aris BSA 2003 and Hapoel Gilbo/Galil will play for pride on Tuesday in Thessaloniki, Greece, with Aris already locked into first place in Group D and Galil eliminated from Last 16 contention. Aris (4-1) beat Galil (1-4) by 83-92 last month in Israel as Christos Tapoutos and PJ Tucker both 24 points. Though Tucker ranks fourth in Eurocup scoring with 19.6 points per game, Aris is much more than him and Tapoutos, as guard Nikos Hatzivrettas and Bryant Dunston, the tournament’s second-leading shot blocker, can both log offensive responsibilities as well, and Kostas Charalampidis and Dejan Borovnjak can pick up the slack when needed. Still, Galil is strong in the perimeter with guards Gal Mekel and high-scoring Jack McClinton, plus Tyler Wilkerson and Leo Lyons at forward. Their go-to guy in the paint is Warren Carter, a scoring and rebounding machine. Dagann Yizvori has been solid in the backcourt with his scoring for Galil, currently the fifth-best rebounding team of the Eurocup. It will be interesting to see if the visitors can control the boards and keep the game in the low scoring numbers, as Aris stands third in that department, with 84.6 per game.

Bobby Brown - Aris BSA 2003Aris BSA 2003 rounded out its Eurocup regular season with a 91-70 victory over Hapoel Galil Gilboa in a game that was essentially for protocol only with Aris already locked into first place and Galil into fourth before the game began. Bobby Brown scored 19 points and dished 4 assists to lead the hosts, as he asserted control on the Aris offense. P.J. Tucker and Dejan Borovnjak added 13 points apiece, Kostas Sloukas scored 11 and dished 6 assists and Kostas Charalampidis came through with 10 points to help Aris finish with a 5-1 record. Aris will now face Le Mans, BG Goettingen and the team that finishes second in Group C in the next stage. Rodney Green and Anton Kazarnovski scored 14 points apiece for Gilboa and Dagan Yivzori and Gal Mekel tallied 10 each as Galil exited the competition with a 1-5 mark.

The visitors started strong with Mekel and Yivzori giving Galil a 6-12 lead. Tucker led Aris back and Brown gave the hosts a 19-17 lead only to see a pair of Yivzori triples lift Hapoel to a 21-25 lead after 10 minutes. Kazarnovski and Jack McClinton worked hard to keep the visitors ahead, though Brown and Borovnjak kept Aris close. A pair of baskets by Kazarnovski put Aris on alert at 33-43 and the home team responded through Brown to climb within 42-45 by halftime. The momentum remained with Aris in the third quarter and after a Yavzori score, the hosts scored the game’s next 16 points – 5 each from Borovnjak and Sloukas – to take control for good. Despite its best efforts, Galil trailed 68-55 after three quarters and when Chrisots Tapoutos scored half the points in a 10-0 blitz early in the fourth quarter, the outcome was clear.

Head Coaches

DRUCKER, SHARON
Aris BSA 2003
"We finished today the first phase of Eurocup taking the first position in our group. We knew it one week before but we have pride as a team, we played very well today and we won the game. We wanted before the Christmas break to give to our fans a message about good basketball. We achieved that we wanted and we will continue our effort to the next round."
LUBIN, LIOR
Hapoel Gilboa Galil
"We played two different halves today. At the first we played very good basketball but at the second it was a terrible game for us. We showed the ugly side of the team. We couldn't find solutions and our statistics were terrible. Aris is a very balanced team. Aris has some players like Brown and Tucker who play well and have experienced Greek players who can help the team as well."
