THE TAKE

The pressure will be high at the Gdynia Sprts Arena on Wednesday when Asseco Prokom hosts Olympiacos Piraeus in Group E. Asseco Prokom enters the game 0-2 in the Top 16 and with a nine-game losing streak overall knowing that anything but a victory would essentially end the Polish champs’ hopes of reaching the Quarterfinal Playoffs for the first time. Meanwhile the Reds scored a crucial home win over Tau Ceramica last week to snap a three-game slide and must win in Poland to keep the momentum going as it looks to return to the quarterfinals. This marks the fifth season in a row in which these two teams will meet and Prokom boasts a 3-1 home record against Olympiacos in those clashes. Last season Prokom’s Week 12 win started a five-game losing streak for head coach Panagiotis Giannakis’s men that nearly ended Olympiacos’s season. But with reserve forward Filip Dylewicz the only Prokom player still on the roster that played in that game, it will have little impact on Wednesday’s match. One interesting note to this game will by newly signed Prokom forward Qyntel Woods facing his former foes after playing for the Reds last season. Woods’s success is crucial to his team’s hopes in this game. He teams with forwards Ronnie Burrell and Koko Archibong and big man Pat Burke to form the frontline that must stand up to Olympiacos’s deep rotation of big men Nikola Vujcic, Ioannis Bourousis, Sofoklis Schortsanitis and Zoran Erceg and forwards Panos Vasilopoulos and Georgios Printezis. The Reds also have a deeper backcourt with Yotam Halperin, Lynn Greer, Jannero Pargo, Theo Papaloukas and Milos Teodosic, but the addition of Tyrone Brazelton to David Logan and Dan Ewing gives head coach Tomas Pacesas more freedom with his guards. Olympiacos’s depth is not only an advantage in terms of having fresh players at the end of games or in the event of foul trouble, but the trouble it causes the opponents in scouting and preparing for so many players could do Prokom in. Neverthe less, with a savvy veteran like Burke anchoring the team inside, a trio of electrifying scorers on the perimeter and a number of gutsy players willing to step in when needed from the bench, Prokom has the makeup to cause an upset if Olympiacos doesn’t bring its ‘A’ game.

GAME NOTES

Asseco Prokom
  • Center Pat Burke has scored in double figures and recorded a steal in five straight appearances. He leads the Top 16 in rebounding with 9.5 per game.
  • Forward Qyntel Woods will face his former team this week. Woods made his Euroleague debut last season with Olympiacos and played under its head coach Panagiotis Giannakis and alongside six of its current players.
  • Guard David Logan has recorded at least 1 steal in 11 straight games this season. Logan has scored in double figures and drilled at least 1 three-pointer in seven straight games.
  • Prokom bested Olympiacos 63-59 the last time these two teams met last January. Forward Filip Dylewicz is the only current Prokom players to play for the club in that game, although Qyntel Woods started for Olympiacos that night. Ioannis Bourousis netted 11 for the Reds in defeat.
Olympiacos
  • Guard Theo Papaloukas leads the Euroleague with 5 assists per game. He has recorded at least 4 assists in 13 consecutive Euroleague games dating back to last season’s Euroleague championship game.
  • Papaloukas became the first player in Euroleague Basketball history to amass 250 career steals when he recorded 2 steals last week.
  • Center Nikola Vujcic recorded the first triple-double of Euroleague Basketball history against Prokom in the 2005-06 season opener. Vujcic, then with Maccabi Tel Aviv, recorded 11 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in guiding his team to a 95-68 win. He was named MVP for the week after that performance.
  • Guard Lynn Greer spent the 2003-04 season playing in Poland for Slask Wroclaw, with whom he led the Euroleague in scoring with 25.1 points per game as well as the Polish League with 20.4 points per game. Greer also helped Wroclaw win the 2004 Polish Cup and played in the 2004 Polish All-Star Game, where he was named MVP.

Quotes Head Coaches

PACESAS, TOMAS
Asseco Prokom
"Although Armani Jeans is the leader of our group, I am still of the opinion that it is Tau Ceramica and Olympiacos who are the main favourites. This game is the last chance for my team to recover after two consecutive defeats. I hope to see my players at their best. If we perform in the defense as we did aginst Armani and add to it our offensive play from the latest game in Polish Leeague against Anwil Wloclawek, we have the chance to beat the famous Olympiacos."
GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"Prokom Trefl is playing its last card in the competition and they will do it in front of their fans. They have a really tough team, especially when they compete at home and they proved it against most of the teams they played in Poland. We have to be serious and focused against a team that likes to run. The key to the game will be controlling the tempo and reducing our turnovers. Especially the second will be really important for us."

Players

DYLEWICZ, FILIP
Asseco Prokom
"I know that Olympiacos is one of the top European teams and I agree with the experts' opinion that the leader of the Greek League is the favourite of this game. But on the other hand I remember three Euroleague games when we defeated them. I believe that we are able to do it once again."
BOUROUSIS, IOANNIS
Olympiacos
"I believe there is not much to say about this game. Based on the group's results so far, things are really simple. The upcoming game is like a final for us and we have to win it. In fact it is the first of the four finals that are in front of us until the end of the Top 16. Prokom doesn't have too many chances to make it to the playoffs and they will not have much pressure. That is their big advantage. Meanwhile, they are an athletic team that likes to run and shoot the ball a lot. The antidote could be controlling the boards and establishing our rhythm without any kind of rush. Whenever we have done this, we have not faced any problems."
Nikola Vujcic - OlympiacosOlympiacos took care of business on the road and beat Asseco Prokom 68-93 in Group E of the Euroleague. Olympiacos improved to 2-1 in the Top 16 and joins a three-way tie with Tau Ceramica and Armani Jeans for first place at 2-1. Meanwhile Prokom dropped to 0-3 and is just about out of hunt to advance. The Reds dominated Prokom by hitting a blistering 81% from two-point range as well as 46% of its three-pointers while outrebounding the hosts 39-20. Head coach Panagiotis Giannakis's side led by 4 points after one period and began taking control in the second quarter with runs of 5-14 and 2-11. Prokom was dominated in the third period as the deficit grew to 23 points, though the hosts tried to get back into the contest trailing by 17 going into the fourth. But Olympiacos used a 0-8 run in the final period to make it a 25-point game. Nikola Vujcic collected 21 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 1 block to pace Olympiacos. Ioannis Bourousis and Georgios Printezis both added 12 points and Lynn Greer scored 10 points for the winners. Theo Papaloukas and Jannero Langdon both had 7 points and 6 assists. Prokom was led by David Logan's 18 points and 4 steals. Qyntel Woods had 12 points and Ronnie Burrell added 10 points in a losing effort.

David Logan - Asseco ProkomBurrell opened the game with a dunk for Prokom after a nice dish from Pat Burke. And Burrell's jumper from the foul line made it 4-0. Printezis's jumper in lane got Olympiacos on the board and Yotam Halperin knotted the game with a driving layup before Printezis's dunk on the break gave the Reds the lead 4-6. Logan gave Prokom back the lead with back-to-back driving lay-ups and a Burrell three from the right wing gave the Polish champs an 11-6 advantage. Vujcic hit two tough baskets as Olympiacos regained the lead 11-12 only to see Woods knock down a triple for the hosts. Baskets by Burrell and Logan kept Prokom ahead 18-16 before a Printezis lay-in evened the game again and started a 1-7 run to finish the first quarter including Vujcic hitting a put-back after having his first attempt blocked and draining a three-ball from the left wing for a 19-23 lead after one period.

Bourousis opened the second quarter with a lay-in and a Tyrone Brazelton three-pointer from the left corner made it 22-25. Olympiacos used its advantage in the paint as Bourousis scored over Burke and then Vujcic scored with an easy lay-in after an inside pass by Bourousis to make it 22-29. Sofoklis Schortsanitis hit a right-handed hook and the gap grew to 10 points on Theo Papaloukas's driving lay-up to make it 24-34. Papaloukas's behind-the-back pass landed at Bourousis, who fought in the lay-up and converted the three-point play for a 26-37 lead. Schortsanitis's lay-up pushed the lead to 12 points and completed a 5-14 Olympiacos run. Logan drained a triple from the right wing to get the deficit down to 30-39. Olympiacos answered by finishing the first half on a 2-11 run with Schortsanitis making three free throws; Panagiotis Vasilopoulos nailing a three-ball from top of the key and Pargo knocking down a triple just before the buzzer to give the Reds a 32-50 lead at the break.

Georgios Printezis - OlympiacosVujcic's driving lay-up to start the second half pushed the lead to 20 points. Woods hit a tough lay-up and then a three-ball from the left wing to bring Prokom within 37-53. Printezis's lefty dunk was followed by Logan's steal and lay-up. Vujcic continued his superb with a lay-up and then he hit Papaloukas for a break-away lay-up and a 41-60 lead and a Prokom time-out. Woods came out of the time-out with a lay-up but Papaloukas and Printezis hit inside lay-ups and Printezis scored again inside after a fine pass by Vujcic as the lead grew to 23 points - 43-66. Woods stopped the surge with two foul shots but Papaloukas fed a driving Vujcic for a dunk and a 45-68 cushion. Prokom would try to come back. Filip Dylewicz tipped in a miss for Assesco and then nailed a three-ball. Przemyslaw Zamojski followed with a foul shot to trim the margin to 51-68. But Lynn Greer answered with a tough three to re-establish a 20-point lead. Zamojski however hit a triple from the right corner to leave Prokom trailing 54-71 after three periods.

Halperin's free throws opened the fourth and Koko Archibong hit Prokom's first basket of the quarter with a jumper in the lane to make it 56-73. Olympiacos refused to let the hosts back into the game. Greer nailed a three-ball before Vujcic fed Bourousis for an easy lay-up. And Greer's driving lay-up gave Olympiacos its biggest lead of the game, 25 points - 56-81. The Reds began bringing in its reserves and Prokom was able to cut into the lead with Logan hitting two baskets in the lane as well as a three-pointer to bring the margin to 65-85. Zoran Erceg hit his second inside lay-in before Zamojski drained a triple to make it 68-87. But Michalis Pelekanos and Halperin finished off the game with three-balls.

Head Coaches

PACESAS, TOMAS
Asseco Prokom
"I was surprised with the lack of energy of my team. It is impossible to beat such a strong team like Olympiacos when most of the players play worse than they are able to. Olympiacos confirmed its reputation of one of the favorites of the whole competition. I am really impressed by their performance."
GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"Before the game I told my players that Asseco Prokom is really dangerous at home and we must be very careful. Now I can say that I am really satisfied with our performance. We outrebounded Asseco Prokom and scored many easy points after counter-attacks. It was the key to our easy win. I wish Asseco Prokom good luck in the next part of the season."

Players

ZAMOJSKI, PRZEMYSLAW
Asseco Prokom
"The score of the game was known after the third quarter. They were too strong for us, but I am satisfied with the opportunity to play against such fantastic players like Vujcic, Papaloukas and others. It is great experience for me and I will try to learn much from this lesson of basketball."
VUJCIC, NIKOLA
Olympiacos
"We still remember our defeat in the first game in Milan and that is why we were so concentrated today. We dominated the boards and that let us play our game from the beginning until the end. We were calm, patient and self-confident and there was no doubt which team was better this evening."
