THE TAKE

Fenerbahce Ulker aims for its second straight win when it hosts struggling Cibona on Wednesday at the Abdi Ipekci Sports Hall in Istanbul. After dropping its home opener, FB Ulker rebounded last week to best Asvel Basket on the road 76-78 in overtime behind a career-high 21 points from Tarence Kinsey and an Omer Asik double-double. However the availability of several key players is up in the air this week due to injuries and point guard Willie Solomon will sit out due to disciplinary issues. Kinsey, Gordan Giricek, Rasim Basak, Serhat Cetin and Emir Preldzic are all game day decisions. Meanwhile Cibona has struggled thus far this season, scoring the fewest points in the league (49.5 ppg.), ranking bottom of the league in two-point (34.8%) and three-point shooting (19.6%) and committing the most turnovers (22 TOpg.) Last week it fell 81-59 at Regal FC Barcelona. Small forward Marko Tomas has been the only bright spot so far, though Jamont Gordon showed promise with 12 points, 3 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks. That duo will need some help to lead the Croatian champs to a road victory in Istanbul. Gordon will find himself matching up against a proven Euroleague talent in Lynn Greer at point guard. On the wings Tomas, Antonio Graves and Bojan Bogdanovic will challenge Kinsey, Gordan Giricek and Omer Onan. Cibona’s starting power forward Vedran Vukusic must be ready to bang inside with the Semih Erden or to follow around big Emir Preldzic, when FB Ulker shakes things up and makes the 2.06-meter forward a playmaker. Cibona veteran Dalibor Bagaric and Luksa Andric will share time at center where they will face Asik and Oguz Savas. A healthy Fenerbahce would be the clear favorite to win this game due to its depth and Cibona’s recent performances, however with so many question marks surrounding the home team’s roster, it is hard to know what to expect. And head coach Velimir Perasovic built a talented squad this season and players like Graves, Bogdanovic and promising teenager Tomislav Zubcic could be just one good game away from turning the season around and they’ll be giving 100% to make that game is this next one against FB Ulker. One way or another, this game will deliver some real excitement.

GAME NOTES

Fenerbahce Ulker

Swingman Gordan Giricek’s professional career took off during five season he spent at Cibona from 1996 through 2001. During that period, he won five Croatian League championships and one Croatian Cup.

Rebounding king Mirsad Turkcan has scored in double figures in eight consecutive Euroleague games. He has made at least one three-pointer in each of those games.

Cibona Zagreb

Dalibor Bagaric and FB Ulker scorer Gordan Giricek were teammates early in their careers at Cibona. The two played together in the 1998-99 season, leading Cibona to the Croatian League crown.

Cibona went 2-8 on the road in the Euroleague last season, but one of those wins came at FB Ulker’s expense, 64-86 in the Top 16. Current Cibona players combined to score just 14 of the team’s points that day.

Quotes Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
“It’s another game we have to win. And at the same time we have plenty of injuries and illness which makes the game against Cibona Zagreb much more difficult for us. We have Emir Preldzic who has flu and has not practiced in two days. Tarence Kinsey has a problem with his ribs and trying to recover. Gordan Giricek also has a slight injury and Rasim Basak sprained his hand. All those things show that we are not ready for the game. We are not really ready inside. So we are a little bit melancholic before the game. We have another problem in playing our games in an empty gym. Both in the Euroleague and the Turkish League, we are still waiting for our fans to come and support us. I hope they will come and support us like the way they did before.”
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"Fenerbahce is one of three favorites of our group and we must keep that in mind. We are trying hard to play better and advance with each game, but many of our young players are in this situation and this level for the first time. So, sometimes we have problems, but we must stay concentrated. After Siena, which was really unpleasant, we played a bit better in Barcelona, so we just have to continue with hard work."

Players

SAVAS, OGUZ
Fenerbahce Ulker
“We are suffering many injuries and have a difficult situation. Cibona lost its first games with big differences, but we also lost against Regal Barcelona with a big difference. What we need to do is to work hard on the court and focus on defense especially. We have a difficult task for sure, but this is a home game anyway and we have to win in any case for the good of the future in the group for us.”
ANDRIC, LUKSA
Cibona
"We played already against Fenerbahce Ulker during the preseason in Sarajevo and we lost. That does not mean that it can be taken into account in this game's preview because many things changed since September. We showed that we can play well in the domestic league and now is time to show that we can be competitive in Euroleague, too. Two hard defeats have not been easy to cope with, but there are many more games to play."
Oguz savas - Fenerbahce UlkerAfter following its young big men most of the night, Fenerbahce Ulker turned to backcourt veterans to seal its second win of the new Euroleague season, 67-62 over visiting Cibona Zagreb on Wednesday. Fenerbahce now stands 2-1 in the middle of Group A, while Cibona's record dropped heavily to 0-3. Fenerbahce needed a 16-0 explosion in the second quarter just to get back into a game that swung back and forth until Omer Onan put the hosts ahead for good late in the third quarter and Damir Mrsic made sure of it down the stretch. Big man Oguz Savas ruled the inside to the tune of 14 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks for Fenerbahce. Onan scored 6 of his 11 points in a row to execute the last lead change, while Mrsic had 9 points on 3 triples that came when the hosts needed them most. Lynn Greer added 9 points for the winners, while Omer Asik had 8 and 3 blocks. Cibona fought back several times thanks to 15 points from Jamont Gordon, 14 from Antonio Graves and 10 each from Marin Rozic and teenage big man Leon Radosevic. Their efforts couldn't overcome disadvantages of 40-27 in rebounds and 6-1 in blocked shots, however.

Savas got Fenerbahce off on the right foot with an offensive rebound for a three-point play to open the scoring. Graves matched him with one shot, from downtown, and soon gave Cibona its first lead, 5-7, by feeding Radosevic for a dunk. Radosevic dunked again on an assist from Jamont Gordon, who then drove the lane to put the guests up 7-11. Onan broke the slide for the hosts, but Tomas scored the next 3 points to make it 9-14. Although Savas got to the line for Fenerbahce, Rozic and Gordon sliced through the hosts' defense as Cibona cruised to the end of the first quarter in control at 11-18.

Another layup by Gordon stretched Cibona's lead to 11-20 to open the second quartrer, not giving a clue what was about to come. Mrsic's triple sparked a reaction from the Fenerbahce bench that continues with Asik dunking and Gordan Giricek burying a three-pointer, too. The next basket, by Asik, put Fenerbahce in the lead again, while its defense kept harassing Cibona into one miss after another. Giricek came back with a basket to which Savas and Tarence Kinsey added free throws and Asik another layup to cap a 16-0 run with the scoreboard showing a sudden 27-20 lead for Fenerbahce. Graves and Rozic broke the spell for Cibona, but when Giricek canned another triple, the Fenerbahce lead was 32-24 - a 17-point swing from earlier in the quarter. Cibona realized there were 2 minutes left in the half, however. So after Graves beat the shot-clock from long range and Vedran Vukusic joined him with his own strike from downtown, Graves finished the half with a shorter jumper good for an 8-0 run and a 32-32 tie on the scoreboard.

Antonio Graves - CibonaRozic scored inside to complete the Cibona comeback at 32-34 to open the second half. Fenerbahce responded by finding Asik open for a dunk and Savas for a hook to lead again. Graves was able to tie it up again with a driving layup, but Onan blasted an open triple to keep Fenerbahce a step ahead at 39-36. Again, the hosts could not hold the edge, however. Rozic made a pair of free throws and Vukusic lined up another big triple as Cibona took a new lead, 39-41. After a timeout, Fenerbahce swung the scoreboard again as the veteran Onan took matters into his own hands. His three-point basket-plus-free throw got the lead back, then his big triple assisted by Asik after an offensive rebound made it 45-41. Kinsey hit a layup and Semih Erden a tip-in as the hosts reached the 30-minute mark holding a 49-43 advantage.

Cibona failed to take advantage of an intentional foul called early in the fourth quarter, getting just a free throw out of that possession. The visitors tried a zone defense to stop Fenerbahce's inside scoring, but a patient Erden found Savas for another layup. Gordon answered with a three-point shot from high then a steal out of the zone let Marko Tomas make a nice feed to Radosevic that trimmed the difference to a single basket, 51-49. That's when Mrsic stepped up again for the hosts, burying a triple while falling down that lifted Fenerbahce's spirits and its lead, to 54-49. An offensive rebound and put-back by Savas with just under 5 minutes left put Cibona's back to the wall again, 56-49. After a delay of several minutes due to a scoreboard problem, Cibona came back to Radosevic for a quick score and locked into its zone to get Fenerbahce's 15th turnover of the night. That zone left Greer alone, however, and he drilled a big shot from the arc at 59-51, after which Cibona's eighth turnover cost a lot more. After another timeout, Mrsic set up in the corner and buried his third three-point shot in as many tries to make it 62-51. Gordan and Rozic got 5 points back for Cibona, but time ran out on the guests as Fenerbahce's game-long resilience paid off with another Group B victory.

Head Coaches

TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We didn't play good enough but I'm happy for the win. We hope to play better in our next games. Now we will play very tough games against Efes Pilsen in the Turkish League and then against Montepaschi Siena in the Euroleague. Cibona was always in the game, ready to win. They beat Partizan and Hemofarm in the last two games on the road in the Adriatic League. They were dangerous all game. We fell down at the end of the first half and at the end of the game and missed the chance to win the game with a bigger difference like 10 or 15 points. We got to 11 points, but missed four straight chances then. This was an important and key win for us to remain in the top four places in the group. I must compliment of the great captain of our team, Damir Mrsic. He showed great heart, which is a good example for the young guys. He is not ready yet, but performed very well in defense and also scored 9 points, which was the key for the win. I'm also happy about the performances of Oguz Savas, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Omer Onan, who fought on defense and made key points in the game, and Emir Preldzic, who played despite being sick and made 5 assists to help the team for good organization."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"I congratulate Fenerbahce Ulker for their win, which is very important for them. Especially in the first half, we played a great defensive game with out zone defense, but our offense was not good enough to dominate the game. The rebounds were equal in the first half, but Fener changed the balance and dominated the rebounds and that was the key. We couldn't balance the game in the paint. This was a very important game for both sides and they did the things needed to win it."

Players

MRSIC, DAMIR
Fenerbahce Ulker
"I'm really very happy to come back in action with a very important win for us. I tried to do my best on the court as I always do, but after missing one month without any games, it is not easy to perform as usual. I felt comfortable after hitting my first shot and that helped my motivation, to do the things as good as I can. We knew that this game is one of the key matches in our group for the next stage. And I'm really very happy for my team that we won this very important game."
GRAVES, ANTONIO
Cibona
"It was a very important and tough game for both teams. We tried to do everything we could to win the game, but failed at the end. They had big guys dominating the inside game. It was a pity for us to lose our big guy Dalibor Bagaric due to injury. But there was no one to blame for the loss. We fought, but it was not enough."
