THE TAKE

Prokom Trefl will try and take another step towards the Top 16 when it hosts Olympiacos Piraeus on Thursday in Sopot, Poland. The Polish champs are currently in fifth place in Group A with a 4-5 record, but lead the sixth place team, Le Mans, by just one win. Only the top five teams in each group are guaranteed a spot in the Top 16. Olympiacos, meanwhile, is second in the group with a 7-2 record and could theoretically punch its ticket to the next round with a win in Sopot, if Le Mans also loses its game. The Reds had an easy time with Prokom when they met in November, dominating inside on the way to a 97-74 win. Anrija Zizic scored 22 and Ryan Stack had 11 points and 10 rebounds as Olympiacos outrebounded Prokom 42-26. Danatos Slanina led Prokom with a season-high 19 points in 19 minutes off the bench. Prokom centers Husein Besok (11.1 ppg., 5.4 rpg.) and Michael Andersen will need to lead the Prokom charge on defense and on the boards against Olympiacos, the top rebounding team in the Euroleague with 37.4 rebounds per game. Forwards Tomas Masiulis, Adam Wojcik (8.8 ppg.) and Jasmin Hukic will also need to rise to the occasion against the visiting frontline that boasts Zizic (15.6 ppg.), Stack, Sofoklis Schortsanitis, Ioannis Bourousis (8 ppg.) and small forward Alex Acker (16.7 ppg., 7.2 rpg., 2.6 spg.), the team's leading rebounder, who is sixth in the Euroleague in steals. Point guard Scoonie Penn (13.4 ppg., 3.9 apg.) and swingman Henry Domercant (12 ppg.) are the main weapons in the Olympiacos backcourt that also features Panagiotis Vasilopoulos and Manolis Papamakarios. Prokom's guard rotation is full of seasoned veterans with Christian Dalmau (11.8 ppg.), Justin Hamilton and Rashid Atkins sharing playmaking duties and Slanina (10.9 ppg.) and ex-Olympiacos player Jeff Nordgaard coming off the bench to provide outside shooting. One risky, but potentially rewarding way for coach Eugeniusz Kijewski's side to neutralize the Olympiacos big men is by having his own shoot from downtown. Besok, Wojcik, Masiulis and Hukic are averaging a combined 2.6 threes per game. If they can make their first few and force Pini Gershon's charges to step out, it will change the dynamic of the game in the hosts favor. However if they miss their first few, Olympiacos may be happy to pack the paint, control the glass and run for easy transition points as the team edges closer to the Top 16.

Quotes Head Coaches

KIJEWSKI, EUGENIUSZ
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"Surely we have to play better than in our first game in Pireaus. At that time, we could not find a way to beat the Greek team, and now we haver to learn from that and try to beat them again. The key to the game will be stopping their fast attack. In Pireaus, we could not do it, but I hope we can manage it. We have to play with our maximum concentration. Each player has to give 100 percent because only then can we think about a victory."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"It is good that we have our first game on the road after the break, because we will be more focused and serious. And definitely it is not going to be easy to escape from Poland with a win. Prokom is a very tough opponent with constant steps the last couple of years and many experienced players. They want to win since they fight to get the ticket towards the Euroleague Top 16, but we want this victory as well to keep on chasing the first place of our group and to start the New Year successfully."

BESOK, HUSEYIN
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"Olympiacos is a very good team, one of the main favorites to get to the Final Four. Our goals don't aim so high, but I think we can beat the Greek team. We play at home, so we have a big advantage. Our fans give us great support and with their help we can play really good basketball. Olympiacos is a very balanced team. We cannot concentrate on specific players. We have to stop the whole team. Olympiacos has a deep roster with many stars, however, I hope we'll be able to win and give a present to our fans."
PENN, SCOONIE
Olympiacos
"Prokom is a very good team, which becomes even stronger when they compete at home. The point is to see in what kind of shape we are after the break. They fight hard on defense and what we should do is not allow them play their game. We have to establish our rhythm on the court and if we manage to do that, we will be the winners. We know we have a good team, but we need to prove it during the game."
Andrija Zizic - Olympiacos Olympiacos became the second Group A team to advance to the Top 16 in when it defeated difficult Prokom Trefl 64-73 on the road in Sopot, Poland on Thursday. Olympiacos improved to 8-2 and is second in the Group A standings right behind another Top 16 qualifier, Tau Ceramica, first at 9-1. Prokom dropped to 4-6 but keeps all-important fifth place, the last guaranteed Top 16 spot in any group. Scoonie Penn, Alex Acker and Andrija Zizic led the winners each with 13 points, while Ryan Stack posted a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds and Henry Domercant scored all of 11 points in the fourth quarter. Michael Andersen was the only Prokom player in double digits with 19 points. Penn and Stack each had 6 points in a 1-18 opening run which gave the Reds full control of the game. Prokom did not surrender, however, as Andersen and Jasmin Hukic managed to get Prokom within 32-38 early in the third quarter. Zizic and Penn rescued Olympiacos, which used outstanding defense and several quick baskets early in the fourth quarter to seal the win long before the final buzzer.

Olympiacos succeeded with a very aggressive defense to start the game, holding Prokom scoreless on its own floor for the first 3 minutes. Meanwhile, an easy layup by Andrija Zizic sparked a 0-6 opening run that Penn capped with a running jumper. A free throw by Huseyin Besok put Prokom on the scoreboard at last, but it was misleading. The hosts still could not find the basket, while a fallaway jumper by Penn sparked a 0-10 Olympiacos run run in which Stack had 6 points, including back-to-back jumpers for a mammoth 1-16 lead. Prokom made only free throws until its first basket after 11 missed attempts came as Hamilton buried a shot from downtown. Soon, Hamilton and Rashid Atkins brought Prokom within 9-18. Foul shots by Acker and Penn, as well as another triple by Hamilton, fixed the score at 13-22 after 10 minutes.

Michael Andersen - Prokom TreflJasmin Hukic and Michael Andersen kept feeding the Prokom comeback with free throws for a 16-22 scoreboard early in the second quarter. Acker revived the Reds with a second-chance basket while Zizic slammed a fastbreak dunk to force another Prokom timeout at 16-26. Adam Wojcik downed a tough jump-hook for the hosts, but Acker bested him with a high-flying three-point play. Andersen scored twice around the basket to get Prokom within 22-29, but Penn canned a four-meter jumper to start another Olympiacos run. Zisis stepped up with a put-back basket and Manolis Papamakarios buried a corner triple to finish off a 0-7 spurt that was good for a 14-point lead, 22-36. Donatas Slanina found his first basket in transition for Prokom but Zizic answered the same way. Hukic hit a corner three-pointer and Filip Dylewicz added a free throw to get Prokom closer, but the visitors still held a double-digit advantage, 28-38, at halftime.

Prokom improved its defense after the break, making the Reds go scoreless for 3 minutes. Meanwhile, Andersen fired in a baseline jumper and added a put-back layup to get the hosts within 32-38. Olympiacos did not panic, however, as Zizic and Stack hit free throws to restore a double-digit advantage, 32-42. The guests did not allow easy points now, while Zizic capped a 0-6 Olympiacos run with a fastbreak layup. Stack matched a layup by Atkins, and while Proom also got free throws from Besok and a power dunk by Dylewicz, Penn and Stack kept the Reds ahead, 38-50, after 27 minutes. Prokom opted to attack the rim once the Reds entered the foul bonus. Atkins hit free throws and Hukic added a big triple, but Vasilopoulos answered from downtown for a 43-54 Olympiacos lead. Dylewicz rolled off a high post pick to score and get Prokom within 45-54 after three quarters.

Penn returned to help the Reds to control the game rhythm at the start of the fourth quarter. Olympiacos kept controlling the boards, too, while Acker hit free throws and Domercant added a long two-pointer to make it a 13-point game, 45-58. Besok answered with a quick layup but Sofoklis Schortsianitis did better with a three-point play. A subsequent layup by Domercant made Prokom call timeout at 48-63, with 6 minutes to go. Andersen woke the hosts up with a layup-plus-free throw, the first of 5 points in a row for Prokom. The hosts' hopes faded, however, Acker made free throws and fed Domercant for an easy basket. Prokom would have to keep fighting to make the next round, while Olympiacos could look ahead to bigger goals now.

Head Coaches

KIJEWSKI, EUGENIUSZ
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"We started really badly. It is a very rare situation like today when the team starts the game so badly. The first minutes were decisive. Then we tried to come back to the game but we could not. We missed too many open shots and from the baseline. If we won we would have a great situation. But the loss does not mean the end of our chances. The decicive games are ahead of us."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"The teams coming to Prokom had hard games. Tau, Efes won luckily, Dynamo even lost. We expected a tough game also and it was a hard game like I had thought earlier. We played brilliant at the beginning of the game. The good start let us then control the game. We played good defense. Usually we need score more than 80 points to win the game. Today we limited Prokom to 64 so we should not score more than 80 in order to win the game."

Players

ANDERSEN, MICHAEL
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"I played well, but I'm not satisfied because my team lost the game. We cannot play so bad like in the first minutes if we think about beating such teams as Olympiacos. If we want to win such games we have to play perfect. Unfortunately our performance was not good and the guests executed all our weak moments in the game."
PENN, SCOONIE
Olympiacos
"I'm very happy because of the victory. We expected a tough game. At its own gym Prokom plays really good. In this arena there are specific hoops, which are very hard. We won the game, and the key was the defense. We started really good. In the first minutes we did not let Prokom score easy points and we were able to create a big advantage."
