THE TAKE

After becoming the first Group C team to reach the Top 16 last week, CSKA Moscow will look to climb a step higher in its battle for first place when it hosts rival Maccabi Electra in the Russian capital on Thursday. The two teams are tied with Caja Laboral for the top spot at 5-2, but one will have to drop back this week. CSKA has reeled off four straight wins – three by double-figure margins – since falling 71-54 at Maccabi in November. An awful long-range shooting night (3 for 21) and 24 turnovers doomed the Russian champs that night. However head coach Evgeny Pashutin’s men have turned things around since then and are averaging more than 20 points per game more than they scored in Tel Aviv. The biggest difference in the CSKA lineup in recent weeks has been the insertion of center Sasha Kaun to the starting five, where he has blossomed. Kaun teams with Dmitry Sokolov to give CSKA two big bodies to bang with inside, while the versatile Viktor Khryapa stands out at power forward. Maccabi will look to shot-blocker D’Or Fischer, the bruising Yaniv Green and low-post scorer Maciej Lampe to get the job done against Kaun and co., while the athletic Stephane Lasme matches up well with Khryapa. Maccabi can also use sharpshooter David Bluthenthal at power forward to draw Khryapa outside and prevent him from helping on defense. Both teams feature their best scorers on the wings. CSKA relies on Trajan Langdon and Euroleague MVP Ramunas Siskauskas with Anton Ponkrashov growing into an increased role off the bench. Maccabi counters with the athletic Alan Anderson and all-around threat Chuck Eidson, who has been in great form recently, while the feisty Guy Pnini brings intensity and three-point shooting off the bench. CSKA has two game-changing weapons at point guard in veteran J.R. Holden and tall playmaker Zoran Planinic. Andrew Wisniewski, who is familiar with the surroundings after playing in Russia last year, starts for Maccabi with the explosive Doron Perkins, who often saves his best stuff for the second half of games, is an ideal compliment off the bench. One key stat to keep an eye on is rebounding: Maccabi is the No. 1 defensive rebounding side in the competition and CSKA is last in offensive rebounding. This game promises 40 minutes of passion and intensity from two teams that know each other well and know how much this victory could mean to the rest of the season.

GAME NOTES

CSKA Moscow

Trajan Langdon was named Final Four MVP in 2007 after recording 21 points on near-perfect shooting, 7 rebounds and 2 steals for a career-best 33 index in the championship game as CSKA beat Maccabi 77-91.

Langdon needs 1 more three-pointer to become the sixth player in Euroleague Basketball history to make 300 triples in his career.

Ramunas Siskauskas and Maccabi forward David Bluthenthal were teammates at Benetton Treviso in the 2004-05 season.

Head coach Evgeny Pashutin played in Israel during the 1999-2000 season for Maccabi Ra’anana. His head coach there was current Maccabi assistant Sharon Drucker.

Pashutin coached Maccabi point guard Andrew Wisniewski last season at Spartak St. Petersburg.

Sasha Kaun picked up his first career Euroleague double-double last week against Lottomatica.

Viktor Khryapa needs just 4 more blocked shots to reach the career top 10 in that category. He enters this game in 15th place with 76 blocks from 79 games.

Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv

Derrick Sharp has lost to CSKA twice in Euroleague title games. He came off the bench for Maccabi when it lost to CSKA in 2006 in Prague and in 2008 in Madrid.

Center Maciej Lampe and CSKA guard Anton Ponkrashov were teammates over the last two seasons at Khimki Moscow Region. They helped the team reach the 2009 Eurocup title game.

Andrew Wisniewski played alongside CSKA big man Nikita Kurbanov last season at Spartak St. Petersburg.

Maccabi leads the league in steals (9.4 spg.) and blocked shots (4.9 bpg.) per game.

Guy Pnini scored a season-high 18 points last week against Caja Laboral. He had combined for 18 points in the previous six games.

Chuck Eidson scored a season-high 19 points last week against Caja Laboral.

Stephane Lasme scored a season-high 14 points in a Week 3 win over CSKA.

Quotes Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
CSKA Moscow
"Maccabi is a well-disciplined, athletic team. Coach Pini Gershon always implemented fast basketball with different types of defenses – switching, zone. Our main goal is to play disciplined defense and not to let Maccabi score on easy baskets. Our defense wasn’t bad in Tel Aviv as we allowed 71 points only, but we played poorly offensively. Now we are improving game by game, we are demonstrating better team basketball, our team chemistry is better. And we are approaching the game against Maccabi especially attentively. We want to play good defense again and to play more focused, organized offense."
GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"Everybody knows by now that the CSKA Moscow we beat in Tel Aviv in the first round isn't the same team we will meet on Thursday. They have glued together and made some small adjustments that show a totally different face of the team. We will need to find answers to their backcourt and stay focused on the rebound to allow them as few possible chances to score. If we make as few turnovers as we did last week, we'll be in a very good position, but just like last week it might not be enough. We'll need to execute our game plan to the max to get this victory. Maccabi has had some big days and big wins in Moscow, but every game has a different story. This one is more difficult than the one we had last week in Tel Aviv and lost, which means we'll have to play much better in order to win. Last week we missed a chance to make our lives easier in this group, so we need to step up and fix it. We go there to win, clear and simple, and every player on the team knows what this game means to the team as a whole and to them as individuals."

Players

KHRYAPA, VICTOR
CSKA Moscow
"Our opponent is a very strong team and is having a good season both in Europe and at home. We suffered a painful loss against Maccabi in Tel Aviv so we are dreaming about revenge. They are fast and athletic but we can manage that."
FISCHER, D'OR
Maccabi Electra
"It's going to be a great challenge for us, but this is what the Euroleague is all about - step up every time you see such big challenge in front of you. When you get your butt kicked, like happened to us last week, you must get up and respond, and this is what we'll try to do in Moscow. We need to handle our business now. We can get this win, which is very important for us, and separate ourselves again from CSKA."
Sasha Kaun - CSKA MoscowCSKA Moscow held on a strong Maccabi Electra charge to record a 77-72 victory on Thursday in the Russian capital. Sasha Kaun scored a career-high 21 points and Ramunas Siskauskas drained 4 clutch free throws in the final minute to lead CSKA to its fifth straight win and a share of the Group A lead at 6-2. The Russian champs visit Union Olimpija in their next game after the winter break before a showdown with group co-leader Caja Laboral in Week 10. Maccabi slipped to 5-3 and third place in the group, though it retains the potential head-to-head tiebreaker against CSKA. Maccabi hosts Lottomatica Roma in Week 9. Trajan Langdon shined early with 3 three-pointers in an 11-0 run as the hosts went ahead 28-11 after 10 minutes. The lead reached 21 in the second quarter, but Maccabi fought back with 15 unanswered points bridging the second and third quarters. The Israeli champs managed to tie the score four times in the closing minutes, the last at 72-72, but came up short on the key plays at the end. Langdon, Zoran Planinic and Siskauskas scored 13 points apiece for the winners, while Viktor Khryapa dished a career-high 8 assists – all in the first half. Chuck Eidson scored 17 to lead Maccabi, which was undone by its 20 turnovers. Andrew Wisniewski added 16 points and 9 rebounds and D’Or Fischer added 10 points in defeat.

Langdon opened the scoring with a foul-line jumper before Fischer sank a long jumper for the visitors. Khryapa fed Kaun for a slam in transition and then the big man muscled his way through a double team as CSKA grabbed the early lead. Eidson sank a mid-range jumper, but a Langdon sandwiched a pair of threes around a Khryapa bucket to build a commanding 14-4 lead. Maccabi head coach Pini Gershon shook things up by pulling his starting backcourt of Wisniewski and Guy Pnini for Doron Perkins and Alan Anderson, hoping to find someone to stop Langdon, but it did not work as Langdon sank his third three of the night to cap an 11-0 run. Eidson answered from downtown for Maccabi, only for Khryapa to lob Planinic to keep the hosts cruising. J.R. Holden came off the bench and drilled a three and Khryapa found Kaun for another slam as the CSKA lead reached 15. Maciej Lampe scored for the visitors, but Maccabi could not gain any momentum. Holden ended the quarter with a long jumper to make it 28-11.

CSKA continued to pad the lead as Khryapa fed Kaun underneath for another dunk and an 18-point lead. Wisniewski countered with a three-pointer. Andrey Vorontsevich came off the bench and made a hook shot for a 34-15 lead. Planinic assisted Siskauskas for a fast-break layup as the CSKA lead moved past 20. Anderson and Wisniewski scored from the line, but a long Planinic jumper made it 40-19. Maccabi showed signs of life when David Bluthenthal drilled a three and Anderson fed Stephane Lasme for a slam to get within 15. After Kaun sank 2 free throws, Eidson drained a triple and Wisniewski got to the line to trim the deficit to a 13. Anderson ended the half with a follow on a Pnini miss to make it 45-34.

Chuck Eidson - Maccabi ElectraFischer buried an open jumper a minute into the second half to push the deficit below 10 for the first time sine the first quarter. Planinic missed 2 free throws and Wisniewski darted upcourt where he drilled a jumper. CSKA head coach Evgeny Pashutin called a prompt timeout to try and ignite his charges before Maccabi grabbed the momentum. But a 24-second violation on CSKA and a fade-away jumper by Eidson brought the visitors within 45-40. Anderson scored a basket-plus-foul on the break to complete a 0-15 Maccabi charge. Khryapa sank a pair of free throws nearly three minutes into the third quarter to end the drought, but Eidson got a roll as his jumper fell. Khryapa and Langdon both netted free throws to increase the CSKA cushion to 6. Pnini responded from downtown and on the next play drew a foul while shooting a three, sank 2 free throws and made it a 2-point game. Planinic buried a three over Perkins, but Kaun missed twice from the line in trying to grow the lead more. Perkins made a free throw and set Bluthenthal up for 2 more to make it 55-53. Free throws by Siskauskas and Planinic put the hosts up 5. Wisniewski muscled his way through the CSKA defense to bring Maccabi to 58-56 with 10 minutes to go.

Planinic opened the fourth quarter with a clutch three-pointer before Eidson pulled up for a mid-range jumper. Holden sank a long jumper and Kaun added a free throw to put CSKA up by 6. Khryapa fouled Fischer who was attempting a slam. He argued the call and received a technical, which was his fifth foul and ended his night. Fischer sank all 4 free throws Eidson banked a shot on the resulting possession and tied the game at 66-66. Siskauskas sank a pair of free throws to restore a slim CSKA edge. Anderson silenced the crowd with pass to Fischer for an alley-oop slam to retie the score. Kaun made it 70-68 from the line with just under three minutes to play, but Wisniewski matched him at the other end. Kaun scored down low and Eidson missed a jumper. But Planinic missed at the other end and Wisniewski went to the line and tied it at 72-72. Bluthenthal send Kaun back to the line with 1:09 remaining and the center made just 1. But a bad pass by Wisniewski took away Maccabi’s chance to take the lead. Siskauskas made it a 3-point game with 2 free throws and 35 seconds remaining and Gershon called for a timeout to draw up a play. But Bluthenthal missed from close range and CSKA managed to kill the clock, with Siskauskas sealing the win with 2 final free throws.

Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
CSKA Moscow
"A game of this level is a jewel for the Euroleague. The fans saw the battle of CSKA, who played last four final games and Maccabi which opposed to our team in two of those games. We thought that we won too early and allowed our opponent to get back into the game. When you score one easy basket after another you begin to think that your opponent gave up already. And the team stopped playing defense. Maccabi has a number of great scorers who come from the bench and they scored 3 three-pointers to get back on track. If we were able to defend and to keep 20-point difference at the break, I think the opponent could not compete. In the third and fourth quarters our visitors played zone, and in the end, after losing Khryapa we took a risk of playing Siskauskas at four. And we succeeded. First they did not get help from the power forward position and second, Ramunas scored 4 key free throws in the end."
GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"We expected a tough game here as usual. We started badly allowing CSKA to control offensive rebounds and we turned the ball over too much. But in the second quarter we started to play better defense, took over control of the game and were able to get close after trailing by 21 points. It was very important to take right decisions in the end – both for players and referees – but we took two wrong decisions and got two wrong calls. After the first quarter we tried not to let Kaun catch the ball inside and if he did get the ball – not to let him score easily. And you can see that CSKA had 6 offensive rebounds in the first period and only rebound after that."
