THE TAKE

Red-hot GHP Bamberg hosts Climamio Bologna on Wednesday in Germany for a clash between two of the teams tied for third place in Group A and crowding in on the co-leaders. Euroleague newcomer Bamberg (6-4) has won four games in a row – including the last two on the road – and now returns home, where it holds a 4-1 record so far. Climamio (6-4), which has won three of its last four, is just 1-4 on the road this season. This game will have a little extra meaning for both sides, since there is a chance that the winner could advance to the Top 16 already this week, although that will also depend on other results. When these teams met in November, Kiwane Garris and Marco Belinelli scored 16 apiece as Climamio dominated from start to finish in a 94-64 win. Climamio's potent attack outdid itself in that game, nailing 11-of-18 three-pointers, making 64.7 percent of its two-pointers and dishing 19 assists. Climamio 81.3 points per game ranks third in the Euroleague. It is also among the top four teams in two-point (55%) and three-point (39.4%) accuracy, as well as assists (14.2 apg.), while leading all teams with 12.3 steals per game. Bamberg's team stats may not be as impressive, but it boasts fine defense, lasting power and a trio of dangerous players in Spencer Nelson, Demond Mallett and Derrick Phelps. Nelson (13.4 ppg., 9.7 rpg.), the Euroleague's third-ranked rebounder, had this season's best individual performance with 23 points and 20 boards in Week 8 against Benetton. Phelps (7.8 ppg., 3.2 apg.) has become a master of game-winning shots after his triple decided last week's win at Strasbourg, just as another of his shots beat Union Olimpija a week before. Bamberg's top scorer, Mallett (14.7 ppg.), will be fortunate not to have injured Climamio guard Nate Green to deal with, but still must contend with Garris (9.7 ppg., 47.3% 3FG) and Sani Becirovic (12.1 ppg.) among the plentiful talents on the perimeter for the visitors. Up front Climamio will turn to Travis Watson (7.8 ppg.), Stefano Mancinelli and perhaps even Erazem Lorbek (8.4 ppg.) to stop Nelson. The game also promises an interesting duel in the pivot between Bamberg's Chris Ensminger and Climamio's Dalibor Bagaric (9.4 ppg.). Both teams feature three-point specialists whose performances could also impact the game. Climamio top scorer Belinelli (14 ppg.) has made half of his 46 three-point tries this season, while Tim Begley (7.8 ppg.) is 15-of-33 from the arc for Bamberg. Climamio will look upon this game as a test of its road readiness, and in doing so should expect to play all 40 minutes to have a chance, since Bamberg has been an expert second-half team throughout its surprising season so far.

Climamio Bologna put itself on the brink of qualification to the Euroleague Top 16 from Group A by rallying from 13 points down in the second half to beat GHP Bamberg 67-76 on the road in Germany on Wednesday. Climamio improved to 7-4 in the Group A standings while Bamberg dropped to 6-5. Bamberg would have qualified had it won, but Climamio must wait until Thursday, when it can do so if Union Olimpija defeats Strasbourg. Otherwise, Climamio will have the chance when it hosts Strasbourg in Week 12. With fellow guard Nate Green out due to injury, Kiwane Garris led the winners with 20 points. Sani Becirovic added 16 while making 8 of 8 free throws, while Dalibor Bagaric had 10 for Climamio, which spent 25 hours reaching Bamberg due to various weather problems during its trip to Germany. Demond Mallet led Bamberg with 20 points. Robert Garrett added 10 for the hosts, who had led 44-31 midway through the third quarter. Garris had 8 points in 5 minutes to bring Climamio within 49-47 after 30 minutes, then the guests used a 2-13 run in which he scored 5 more points to take control until the final buzzer.

Davide Bruttini was a surprise starter in place of Stefano Mancinelli for Climamio, while Nelson got Bamberg started by puting back his own miss and making a foul shot that came with the play. Bagaric put Climamio on the board with free throws, but Nelson buried a three-pointer from the wing to push Bamberg's lead to 6-2. Climamio kept going inside to Bagaric, who collected 3 more points. Nelson was everywhere, however, passing to Koko Archibong for a dunk, driving for a reverse layup and dishing to Uvis Helmanis for another basket inside that made it 12-7. After a Climamio timeout, wide-body Travis Watson took over defending Nelson and Erazem Lorbek made Bamberg pay for missed free throws with a three-pointer to make it 12-10. Robert Garrett made Bamberg's next free throws and Helmanis stepped out to hit triple from the corner that lifted the hosts to a 17-12 edge after 10 minutes.

Climamio's Tomas Ress opened the second quarter with a block on Garrett that Becirovic took the other way for a layup. Ress soon dunked a Becirovic miss for a 17-16 score, prompting a Bamberg timeout. Climamio kept rolling, however, as Watson found Becirovic for a layup to post the visitors' first lead, 17-18. After an exchange of baskets, Bamberg reasserted itself as Helmanis and Mallet drained back-to-back three-pointers to open a 25-20 lead. Then, when Ress dunked and Bagaric made a free throw for Climamio, Archibong responded with a three-pointer and Mallet knocked down free throws to make it 30-23. Lorbek got back 5 of those points for Climamio, from the arc and the foul line, but Garrett and Mallet pushed the led back up to 34-28 for the hosts. Mallet picked up his third foul and Kiwane Garris knocked down all 3 free throws that came with it before Derrick Phelps ended the half with a driving layup to keep Bamberg safely ahead, 36-31. Phelps was hurt on the play, however, and missed most of the second half.

Chris Ensminger opened that second half by adding a put-back to Bamberg's advantage. The hosts turned up the defensive pressure and got back-to-back three-pointers from Mallet that seemed to break the game open at 44-31 midway through the third quarter. That turned out to be the biggest lead of the game. After a Climamio timeout, Garris did his best to close the gap, scoring 6 straight points to make it 44-37. Bamberg followed Garrett's layup to a 48-39 advantage, but that's when Nelson picked up his fourth foul and had to sit. Climamio answered with an 8-1 run, sparked by Rodolfo Rombaldoni's three-pointer, to pull within 49-46 after 30 minutes.

Bagaric completed the comeback - and a 5-16 run - with a bank shot evened the game at 49-49 early in the final quarter. Ensminger put Bamberg back ahead 53-51, but Marco Belinelli stepped up for Climamio with a three-pointer over Archibong and Garris copied him, shooting over Mallet, to give the visitors a 53-57 advantage with 4 minutes remaining. Nelson left with 3:39 to play as his fifth foul let Mancinelli complete a three-point that made it 53-60. Bamberg also was missing its floor leader, Phelps. Watson's basket inside and a Garris breakaway layup made it 55-64 for Climamio's biggest lead. Archibong knocked down a three-pointer with 2:17 remaining and Mallet followed with a layup that made it 60-66. But Garris, Becirovic, Belinelli and Watson cooly hit 10 straight free throws over the final 2 minutes to keep Bamberg down and break their tie in the Group A standings.

Head Coaches

BAUERMANN, DIRK
GHP Bamberg
"We played pretty well until the fourth quarter. But they played better defense and hit big threes - Garris and Belinelli. We have to give them credit. They executed better. A couple of guys looked confused out there. Not having Phelps hurt a lot. He's the brain of our team. He keeps the team together. Steffen Hamann is not far enough along yet to organise the offense like Phelps. And Mallet is more of a shooting guard. That was the key to the game. And not having Nelson as a factor hurt us as well. It was too much without Phelps and Nelson to beat a team like Bologna. But we can't hang our heads. What we've accomplished so far is sensational. It's more than any of us had imagined. If we make the final 16 then it's great. But if we don't then we're not too worried. It's been a great success so far."
REPESA, JASMIN
Climamio Bologna
"I was very worried before the game because we had a long and bad travel to get here. We left yesterday at 8 am and I arrived here for lunch at 1 pm today. I didn't know how the team would be mentally and physically. It's not easy to be fresh after such a trip. It was a really bad first half for both teams. We tried to change things by playing stronger defense and more aggressive. We started to run and play good defense. The last 15 minutes was our game. When you defend well you have more confidence on offense. And we changed the game with our defense. It's not easy to match up with Nelson. He can do so many things."

Players

PHELPS, DERRICK
GHP Bamberg
"I've had a hip problem for the past two or three weeks. But this was something with my knee. I think we lost our patience at the end and they made a strong run. We lost our composure. We're a solid team and we need to keep our composure. We're still in a good situation. We have enough power to win at least one. Maybe we'll win all three. We're a confident team. Maybe the team feels more comfortable with me out there. But we have to come back now and learn from our mistakes."
GARRIS, KIWANE
Climamio Bologna
"This was a team effort. I just took the shots which I had and made them. As a team, you always go through spurts. We hit some big shots but more importantly we turned up the defensive pressure on them."
