THE TAKE

Union Olimpija will look to jump-start its chances in Group B when it hosts DKV Joventut on Thursday in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Olimpija (1-5) suffered its fourth straight loss last week., 110-87 at Maccabi Tel Aviv. The only bright spot for Olimpija was the play of Marko Milic, who recorded career-highs of 23 points and 6 assists. Joventut (3-3) topped Cibona 83-73 as Rudy Fernandez returned to form with 22 points in 19 minutes and center Robert Archibald had 12 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. The game will see a reunion between Archibald, Milic and Teemo Ranniko, who were all teammates on the 2005 Scavolini Pesaro side that reached the Euroleague Quarterfinal Playoffs. Olimpija has many areas to address as it heads into the midway point in the season if it plans to make a run at a spot in the Top 16. The team is the second worst in the Euroleague in rebounding (29.3 rpg.) and free-throw shooting (63.9%). Without injured shooter Saso Ozbolt, Milic and Week 5 MVP Rannikko are Olimpija's top scoring threats with 13.5 points per game. Milic also leads in rebounds (5.7 rpg.) and steals (1.8 spg.) and is second in assists (3 apg.). Ender Arslan (11 ppg.) has stepped into Ozbolt's role as a top three-point shooting option off the bench. Fernandez is the main man for Joventut with 15 points per game on excellent shooting (63.2% 2FG, 48.3% 3FG, 90% FT), though with forward Lubos Barton still sidelined with a foot injury, coach Aito Garcia Reneses's team requires a second dependable scoring option. Point guard Elmer Bennett (10.8 ppg., 3 apg.) and power forward Charles Gaines (8.8 ppg., 7.5 rpg.) are both players that could step into that role. Each team has one clear-cut star that the opposition will need to shut down to win. Joventut may look to Andrew Sullivan to try to stop Milic, while Olimpija coach Gasper Okorn will likely turn to Manuchar Markoishvili against Fernandez. The defensive efforts at those key positions could be deciding points in the game. Olimpija has played much better at home than on the road, having lost one game only, to Partizan on a buzzer-beater. The pressure will surely be on the hosts to protect their home floor and to earn another win before they fall too far adrift in the race for spots in the Top 16. Since Joventut has showed that it can cope with the pressure of road games by winning at Unicaja and coming close at Roma, the question will be how Olimpija deals with the pressure.

Quotes Head Coaches

OKORN, GASPER
Union Olimpija
"Joventut comes from the Spanish ACB League, from my point of view the best and strongest in Europe. That fact tells you how strong is Joventut, which has a very experienced coach and good players at all positions. Even though our situation in Group B isn't among the best, we are going for the win that will still let us have options to reach the Top 16. If we beat Joventut and next week have Cibona coming to our arena, too, we can still dream about making the Top 16. We have to know that our only failure this season has been losing against Partizan at home. Everything else is the real picture of our strength in the Euroleague."

CEBULAR, SANDI
Union Olimpija
"No one here has thrown in the towel yet. With a good streak of wins, we could still arrive to the Top 16. Of course, if we don't beat Joventut, everything will be decided. For that reason we are preparing this game as the most crucial one of the season. We players will give the very best of ourselves in order to defeat Joventut, and I hope that also the fans save their voices in order to support us during 40 minutes."
DUEÑAS, ROBERTO
DKV Joventut
"Olimpija has always been known for having teams with young players. I guess the most widely known is Milic, because he was been an elite player for some time now. We will have to develop our game, and try to win because if we do so we will make a step forward to qualify for the Top 16."
Rudy Fernandez - DKV Joventut DKV Joventut Badalona used a fourth-quarter rally to outlast Union Olimpija 67-69 in a thriller in Ljubljana, Slovenia on Thursday night. Marko Milic punished Joventut's defense for three quarters, but after that, a 0-8 run to start the last period allowed the visitors to jump ahead for good. The win saw Joventut improve its Group B record to 4-3, good for a share of second place. Olimpija fell to 1-6 and remains in last place. Rudy Fernandez led the winners with 17 points, while Robert Archibald added 9 points and 10 rebounds. Milic increased his career-high for the second straight games, posting 24 points and 15 rebounds, while Manuchar Markoishvili added 12.

The game started with Fernandez crossing the court for a big dunk, but Milic replied to make it 2-2. Fernandez blasted 5 points, including a three to make it 2-7, but Domen Lorbek also drilled a bomb from downtown and Teemu Rannikko did the same to put Olimpija ahead for the first time, 8-7. The hosts dominated the offensive glass and tied the score at 10-10. Milic scored 8 of his own to launch Olimpija, before Elmer Bennett replied with a three, 18-13. A technical foul on Charles Gaines gave Olimpija an extra edge, but Drew Sullivan was smart and stole a ball for a last basket that left it 24-17 after 10 minutes.

Ender Arslan opened the second quarter with a three, and soon added another basket to maintain Olimpija's lead. Joventut tried to trim the deficit, looking for options inside, as Archibald went scored 4 straight points to make it 29-23. Ivica Jurkovic stopped the bleeding for Olimpija, but Archibald remained active in the paint for Joventut. The patience of Olimpija allowed the hosts to pull away to 35-26 on Jurkovic's easy layup. Fernandez scored a jumper, but slipped as he landed and had to go to the bench with an injury. Milic's 10th rebound resulted in 2 more points, but Ricky Rubio fed Dmitry Flis underneath to get Joventut within 37-31. However, Markoishvili had time for two free throws at the end of the first half to make it 39-31 at the break for Olimpija.

Marko Milic - Union OlimpijaPaco Vazquez blasted a three and Sullivan added a basket to bring Badalona within 3 at the start of the second half. Hasan Rizvic scored for Olimpija to get the hosts going, but Sullivan was back from the locker room and scoring . The Joventut defense forced Olimpija to run long plays, and on the other side, Ferran Laviña hit the bottom of the net with a three to get the visitors to 43-41. However Milic's reply brought him up to 18 points. Fernandez was back on the court and that gave a morale injection to Joventut, as did Rannikko's fourth foul in the 27th minute. Gaines made it a one-point game from the line, 45-44, as Joventut performed better on the defensive glass and Fernandez posted a three to tie the game again. Two free throws by Vazquez and a triple at the buzzer by Fernandez allowed Joventut to jump ahead after 30 minutes, 50-52.

Laviña, Archibald and Rubio combined for a 0-6 Joventut spurt as Milic went to the bench with foul trouble, giving the visitors their biggest lead, 50-58. Olimpija had trouble scoring from outside and Joventut's defense came through with some steals as Fernandez fed Gaines for an alley-oop that gave the guests a double-digit lead. Olimpija needed 4 minutes and 20 seconds to score its first basket in the last period through Lorbek, and Milic soon added another, but then committed an unsportsmanlike foul over Gaines. However, a three-point play by Rizvic made it 57-61 and Milic grabbed a defensive rebound and crossed the court to make it 59-61 with three minutes to go. Rubio turned the ball over after Joventut's timeout, and Lorbek hit two free throws to tie the game at 61-61. Fernandez was Joventut's savior again and Rubio added two free throws with 90 seconds to go, 61-65. Markoishvili had a basket-plus-foul situation for 64-65, but on the next play, Milic fouled out and Gaines had free throws with 33 seconds to go. Gaines hit both attempts making it a three-point game. Arslan missed two triples on the other end and Rubio finished off the game with two more free throws that made Markoishvili's last triple for protocol only.

Head Coaches

OKORN, GASPER
Union Olimpija
"In the third quarter we played awful and that's where our defeat comes from. I have to be satisfied with our first half and the last minutes of the game. What was in between was not the play I expected."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"The game was really hard. There was a lot of competition and in the end, either team could have won. Fortunately, we were more accurate in the key moments and we fly back to Badalona with a crucial win. In the first half we could not stop their offense but in the second half, we managed to decrease their efficiency from the three-point line which was our original plan at the beginning."

Players

MILIC, MARKO
Union Olimpija
"We expected a win but Joventut was better in the key moments of the game, and that is why they deserve the win."
LORBEK, DOMEN
Union Olimpija
"After a very good first half, we played awful in the second and we missed many free throws. With this defeat, all our options for the Top 16 are lost."
FERNANDEZ, RUDY
DKV Joventut
"We knew that a hard game was waiting for us here in Ljubljana, and that is the way it was. We had to give our maximum and that's why we have to be satisfied with the win."
