THE TAKE

A major showdown for the top spot in Group B is set for in Malaga, Spain, on Thursday when Unicaja welcomes Efes Pilsen. Unicaja downed Olympiacos last week and is tied with Lietuvos Rytas atop the Group B standings at 2-0 - but has a 0-5 record in the Spanish League despite its superb Euroleague performance so far. Meanwhile, Efes Pilsen just grabbed his first Euroleague win this season and is ready to keep climbing. It will be a special game for Daniel Santiago, who returns to Malaga to face his former team. Santiago earned Euroleague monthly MVP honors with Unicaja, but missed the 2007 Final Four due to an eye injury. Santiago leads a very deep Efes frontcourt that also includes powerful centers Mario Kasun and Kaya Peker, as well as well-rounded big man Ermal Kuqo, who has not played so far this Euroleague season. Coach Engin Ataman likes to open the floor, using Bostjan Nachbar at power forward. Forward Preston Shumpert is questionable for the game with an ankle injury. Unicaja will be without power forward Giorgos Printezis, who was injured this weekend. As such, Joel Freeland and Robert Archibald are set to see most of the minutes around the baskets, battling against Santiago, Kasun and Peker. Guillen Rubio will come off the bench to offer instant offense. Coach Aito Garcia Reneses will probably use Carlos Jimenez at power forward - especially if Efes opts for a small lineup. Unicaja will be very concerned with stopping two-time Alphonso Ford Trophy winner Igor Rakocevic, who is ready to have a good game at Martin Carpena, just as usual. A public enemy for all Unicaja fans, Rakocevic is always booed in Malaga since an incident in the 2007 Spanish League Quarterfinals. Rakocevic will share time at the wings with Bootsy Thornton and Charles Smith, who has been in great shape recently. Rakocevic is set to test his scoring skills against Taquan Dean. Smith and Thornton are ready for a big battle against Saul Blanco and Berni Rodriguez. Unicaja must try to play up-tempo with Pooh Jeter and Omar Cook running the show. Efes relies on clutch shooters and pass-first playmakers Kerem Tunceri and Ender Arslan. Efes must try to stop Unicaja's transition game and turn the game into a low-scoring battle. Unicaja must play the way it did against Olympiacos - with outstanding intensity at both ends. One way or another, expect a huge showdown in Malaga.

GAME NOTES

Unicaja

Team captain Berni Rodriguez is now 21 points shy of reaching the 1,000-point mark for his Euroleague career. Rodriguez also needs just 1 more steal to reach 100 for his Euroleague career.

Playmaker Omar Cook has dished at least 5 assists in each of his last five Euroleague games and at least 3 assists in all 18 Euroleague games in which he has played during his career.

Two players on the Unicaja roster, big man Augusto Cesar Lima and teenage wing Mika Servera, are available to make their respective Euroleague debuts.

Unicaja has won 16 consecutive regular season home games dating back to December 2006. Three players – Berni Rodriguez, Jiri Welsch and Carlos Jimenez – have been with the club throughout the streak.

Efes Pilsen

Center Daniel Santiago returns to play Unicaja in Malaga this week, where he played three seasons. Santiago played for Unicaja from 2005 to 2008, helping the club win the Spanish League once and reach the Euroleague Final Four.

Igor Rakocevic needs 2 more free throws to catch David Andersen for 10th place on the Euroleague career list. He has made 394 free throws in his career.

Preston Shumpert has already made more three-pointers this season than in all of last season. The forward is 5 for 8 from downtown in two games this year. He was 1 for 10 in eight appearances last season.

Big man Ermal Kuqo has made at least one three-pointer in each of his last five Euroleague appearances.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"We have to try to keep our good moment in the Euroleague, because that means that we would be closer to making the Top 16. That would cut us some slack and would allow us to combine efforts to try to improve our situation in the Spanish League, too. But now we do not have to think about standings but on the Euroleague itself. Efes Pilsen has great potential, but another thing is to know in what shape they are in right now. Whatever it is, they are a team full of great players and they are always a difficult rival."
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Efes Pilsen
"We lost the first leg of the tough games series against Turk Telekom in the Turkish League. Now we play against a very tough team in Unicaja Malaga. They won their last game in the Euroleague with a respectable score, a big difference against a talented team in Olympiacos. We still have some doubts about playing our real game. We are still below our real performance. Plus we lost one of our best shooters who was in good form in the last couple of games, Preston Shumpert, due to ankle injury. But we are on the right path of being a tough team, especially defensively. Now it's time to take some steps forward to prove that we are a good team. There will be a great atmosphere and pressure on us in Malaga because of the home fans. But we will try to handle all those difficulties for a good result."

Players

BLANCO, SAUL
Unicaja
"We really want to do things well and try to stay unbeaten in the Euroleague to be at the top of our group. They are a great team. They have signed well this summer and they have important players like Dan Santiago, Igor Rakocevic, Charles Smith or Bootsy Thornton. Most of their players are well-known and I hope we will show a good image on court so our crowd can enjoy a win."
GULER, SINAN
Efes Pilsen
"We have to play at least better than we played in our previous matches this season against Unicaja Malaga to have a chance to win. They are really playing well and if you analyze their performance against Olympiacos, you can see that our job in Malaga is not easy. We have to stick together as a team and try to play as tough as we can and be patient in offence. We will try our chance to get a win with all our might."
Taquan Dean - UnicajaUnicaja sits alone in Group B's top spot after losing all of a 17-point second-half lead but surviving to defeat Efes Pilsen 93-88 in overtime on Thursday in Malaga, Spain. Unicaja is now 3-0, while Efes dropped to 1-2 despite a huge effort to get back into the game. A rain of 13 three-pointers in 35 long-range attempts proved the difference for Unicaja. Omar Cook, Carlos Jimenez, Berni Rodriguez and Taquan Dean hit a triple each as Unicaja poured in 20 points during the five-minute overtime. Sharing shots was reflected in the boxscore, too, as Dean led five double-figure scorers for the winners with 17 points. Joel Freeland had 15 to go with 9 rebounds, Cook and Rodriguez scored 13 points each, and Robert Archibald added 12. Unicaja had led 59-42 midway through the third quarter, but stalled against a zone defense thereafter as Efes roared back to take slim leads in the fourth. Ender Arslan exploded late to lift Efes into overtime, but there, Unicaja's sharpshooters proved the difference. Bootsy Thornton had 19 points for Efes, while teammates Kaya Peker and Bostjan Nachbar added 17 each, Charles Smith 11 and Arslan 10 plus 8 assists.

Free throws by Archbiald and Jiri Welsch pushed Unicaja to a quick lead to start the game, while Efes struggled for decent shots early. Archibald added a dunk for a 6-0 start before Efes finally hit the scoreboard on a triple from the top by Thornton. Soon, Peker scored inside for the guests to make it 8-7, but Dean got on the board for Unicaja. Igor Rakocevic joined the fun for Efes with his first couple of shots going in, but Dean matched it coming off a screen at 13-9. Daniel Santiago answered for Efes against his old teammates. but his replacement in the paint for Unciaja, Freeland, also scored at the basket. Thornton made a sweet inside shot to get Efes within 13-15 before Rakocevic tied from the line, but Saul Blanco answerd from the corner for Unicaja. An open Nachbar tied it again from deep. Freeland slammed in a rebound, Santiago answered inside and, as the buzzer sounded, Blanco was launching another triple for a 23-20 Unicaja lead after 10 minutes.

Blanco started the second quarter where he left off, with his third triple in as many minutes. Nachbar worked inside to end a mini-drought for Efes, but Archibald made a super spinning drive to keep the hosts up 28-22. Nachbar scored his team's next 5 points, too, cutting the difference to the minimum, 28-27, as an Efes zone stymied Unicaja. But that was only until young Cesar Lima drilled a triple from the corner, reviving the locals. Smith and Rakocevic up the Efes scoring until the guests could again come within a point, 34-33, on a feed from Arslan to Peker for a dunk. Rodriguez answered from the corner, however, and Cook soon matched that triple before Lima finished the half with a layup to keep Unicaja in charge still at 43-36.

Bootsy Thornton - Efes PilsenDefenses ruled right after halftime until Cook's pass for an alley-oop dunk in traffic by Freeland. Next, Freeland went outside, draining a jumper and the accompanying free throw for the first double-digit lead, 48-36. Thornton's tap-in finally got Efes on the board after almost 3 minutes, but a technical foul on Tunceri gave 2 points back to Unicaja. When the same back-door dunk play by Freeland was repeated, this time with no one near him, Unicaja was rolling at 52-38. Although Thornton and Tunceri got shots down, Unicaja kept soaring with free throws by Dean and another basket inside by Freeland. The Unicaja defense did the rest until Cook's big triple ballooned the lead to 17 points, 59-42. Free throws by Nachbar seemed innocent enough until Peker scored twice inside to cut the difference to 59-48. After a Unicaja timeout, Nachbar hit free throws and Smith scored inside to extend the Efes run to 0-10. When Arslan found Peker inside for a basket and free throw, the guests were suddenly within 59-55 after 30 minutes.

Unicaja struggled to stay ahead as Efes kept pouring on the points with a triple by Smith and another layup by Peker to make it 61-60. While Efes was locked in its zone, free throws sustained Unicaja, but only until Thornton went backdoor, scored on a pass from Peker and hit the go-ahead free throw at 63-65, completing a seven-minute, 17-point comeback. Unicaja woke up some as Archibald's baseline jumper dropped for a tie and his free throws put his team back in front, 63-65. Rodriguez made a big steal and layup, which proved even bigger after Arslan's first shot all night fell from way downtown at 69-68. Cook's free throws sent Unicaja up 71-68 going into the last 3 minutes, but Arslan matched him. Unicaja found Freeland alone again, but Arlsan was not to be stopped. His next shot from the arc hit nothing but net to tie 73-73 with 2 minutes left. Those minutes passed pointlessly, however, as Peker missed free throws and Unicaja twice on the last possession, sending the game to OT tied 73-73.

Smith opened the extra 5 minutes by drawing a foul and hitting free throws to give Efes a 73-75 edge. Dean buried a corner three-pointer but more free throws by Smith restored a 76-77 Efes edge. Rodriguez hit a free throw to tie before Cook downed a key triple for a 80-77 Unicaja lead with 3:30 left. Thornton and Dean traded foul shots and a jump hook by Peker kept Efes as close as 80-79. Even when Jimenez fired in an uncontested corner triple, Arslan's foul shots and a three-pointer by Thornton kept Efes alive 87-86 with 1:15 left. Rodriguez immediately answered from downtown, however, forcing an Efes timeout at 90-86, with 58.5 seconds left. Nachbar missed from three-point range while Dean sealed the outcome with a seven-meter bomb that allowed all Unicaja fans to celebrate their team's undefeated status in Group B!

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
“Our first part of the game was outstanding- we played with velocity and concentration. We had very high leads against a great team with stars like Charles Smith or Igor Rakocevic. Later, we played more normally just before the crisis. When you can not score it is very frustrating, but the public helped us and this is very important. The team recovered to play the overtime and won it, and this is a very positive conclusion.”
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Efes Pilsen
“I would like to congratulate Unicaja for this victory, as they played better in overtime with their zone defense. After being behind during a very big part of the game we took control and had our chance to win but missed in the last attack before the overtime.”

Players

RODRIGUEZ, BERNI
Unicaja
“With this win we have recovered the good feelings as a group playing against a very tough team. We didn’t play well against their zone defense and we almost lost, but the team recovered well to win the game.”
