THE TAKE

Olympiacos hosts Efes Pilsen on Thursday at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus, Greece, in a pivotal Group B contest. Olympiacos is coming off a home win over Lietuvos Rytas that improved its record to 2-1 for a share of second place. However the team will be without one of its stars from that game, forward Josh Childress, who is sidelined with the H1N1 virus. However the Reds could have another star back this week after All-Euroleague big man Ioannis Bourousis returned to practice following a leg injury. Meanwhile Efes Pilsen comes off a tough loss at Unicaja. Head coach Ergin Ataman’s men stormed back from a 17-point deficit to force overtime, but Unicaja shot better in the extra period to take the win as Efes dropped to 1-2. Still Efes showed that it can be a force even on the toughest Euroleague courts, which is exactly the type of place it visits this week. These two teams are among the most experienced and deepest in the league, so there is little room for surprises this week. Milos Teodosic and Theo Papaloukas lead an overcrowded Olympiacos backcourt in which nearly every player has playmaking ability and experience. Yotam Halperin, Patrick Beverley and Von Wafer round out a perimeter attack that can generate points in many ways in a hurry. Efes’s guards have more cleanly defined roles, but it is just as deep. Kerem Tunceri and Ender Arslan share the point guard duties, while reigning Alphonso Ford Top Scorer Trophy winner Igor Rakocevic, former scoring king Charles Smith and the indispensable Bootsy Thornton are not by coincidence Efes’s top three scorers. Preston Shumpert is back from an ankle injury to meet Panos Vasilopoulos, who could be Reds’ head coach Panagiotis Giannakis’s choice to step in for Childress. Meanwhile the hosts send their leading scorer, Linas Kleiza, to battle Bostjan Nachbar at the other forward. In the paint Olympiacos turns to Nikola Vujcic, Sofoklis Schortsanitis, rookie Kostas Papanikolaou and possible Bourousis to handle Efes’s Mario Kasun, Daniel Santiago and Kaya Peker. The visitors’ defense will have to be at its best to stop the league’s strongest attack on its own court. If Efes can do so, it will have a chance to strike a big road win that could change the course of the season for both teams. But if Olympiacos runs to 90+ points again, it could be on its way to another big win.

GAME NOTES

Olympiacos Piraeus

Theo Papaloukas is closing in on a spot among the best 20 career scorers in the Euroleague. Papaloukas now has 1,404 points – 10 away from 20th place.

Center Nikola Vujcic is 5 offensive rebounds behind his former Maccabi teammate Marcus Goree for 10th place on the career offensive rebounding chart. Vujcic currently has 239 career offensive rebounds.

Ioannis Bourousis and Efes Pilsen guard Bootsy Thornton were teammates at Barcelona at end of the 2005-06 season. Bourousis joined the team to help for the Spanish League playoffs.

Linas Kleiza and Efes Pilsen guard Charles Smith were teammates briefly during the 2005-06 season with Denver in the NBA.

Efes Pilsen

Big man Kaya Peker scored a career-high 23 points in a 75-78 overtime win at Olympiacos in November 2005. Peker also had 7 rebounds and 3 blocks in the game.

Peker rejected a career-high 4 shots against Olympiacos in the 2006-07 season opener. Peker’s team at the time, Caja Laboral, lost the game 97-78.

Peker needs just 1 more blocked shot to reach 20th place on the Euroelague’s career shot-blocking charts. He has blocked 71 shots in 134 games over his career.

Small forward Preston Shumpert netted a career-high 26 points against Olympiacos in a February 2006 contest. Despite his effort, Olympiacos beat Shumpert’s team at the time, Armani Jeans Milano, 75-84.

Kerem Tunceri needs 8 more assists to reach the 300-mark for his Euroleague career. He would be the 15th player to reach such a mark.

Igor Rakocevic needs one more three-pointer to tie former Efes Pilsen player Ibrahim Kutluay for ninth place on the Euroleague’s career list. Rakocevic enters the game with 227 triples in his career.

Quotes Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"Efes Pilsen is a team with high ambition and a lot of enthusiasm. They played well in their last two games and they have a deep roster, and players with quality and the possibility to cause major problems for any opponent. We have to keep our concentration at both ends of the court. Since we have injury problems and illnesses, all the players have to be ready at every given moment to help the team."
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Efes Pilsen
"We are going to play the toughest game on the road this season. Olympiacos is an excellent team packed with great stars like Nicola Vujcic, Theodoros Papaloukas, Linas Kleiza. Sure they have ups and downs, but they got a big win against Lietuvos Rytas last week. We also have an experienced and talented squad and our performance is rising in the last couple of games, which makes me hopeful about this game. We will try to snatch a win there in Athens at the Peace and Friendship Arena, which we are very familiar of."

Players

PAPALOUKAS, THEODOROS
Olympiacos
"We improved our performance in the last two games versus Lietuvos Rytas and Kavala and now we have more passion, a better attitude and this is something that upgrades our game. Efes Pilsen has a lot of good players and although they didn’t show all their potential yet, they are very dangerous. Our duty is to drive the match where we want and not allow them to get their first big win in this Euroleague season."
SHUMPERT, PRESTON
Efes Pilsen
"There’s not much to say about Olympiacos other than they are a great team. If we want to get a win there, we have to do things much better than we have in the rest of the season. We have the skill and the power to prove that we could get a win there. And this is what we want to do there."
Panagiotis Vasilopoulos - OlympiacosOlympiacos survived a tough test in Group B by downing difficult Efes Pilsen 105-90 in the Pireaus, Greece on Thursday. Olympiacos improved to 3-1 and ties with Lietuvos Rytas for second place in Group B, right behind undefeated leader Unicaja. Meanwhile, Efes went down to 1-3 and registered its third consecutive road loss. Efes, however, hosts 4 of its 6 remaining games in this group. A recovered Ioannis Bourousis led the winners with 23 points in just 12 minutes. Linas Kleiza added 20, Panos Vasilopoulos had 18, Sofoklis Schortsianitis got 11, Nikola Vujcic contributed 10 while Theo Papaloukas dished 8 assists for the Reds. Mario Kasun and Igor Rakocevic each had 15 points to lead Efes. Kerem Tunceri and Bootsy Thornton added 13 apiece while Bostjan Nachbar got 10 for the guests, that led 38-46 late in the second quarter. Bourousis singlehandedly brought the Reds within 46-48 at halftime. A corner three-pointer by Nachbar gave Efes its biggest lead of the night, 52-61. Bourousis stayed on fire and got some help from Kleiza and Vujcic to make Olympiacos get a 76-69 margin after 30 minutes. Papaloukas shined in the fourth quarter with his court sense and experience while Vasilopoulos and Schortsianitis allowed the Reds to seal the outcome minutes before the final buzzer.

Olympiacos tried to find Schortsianitis against Daniel Santiago in the low post early in the game. Santiago got Efes going with an uncontested dunk, however, and a mid-range jumper by Thornton gave the guests a 1-4 lead. Patrick Beverley collected a steal and raced downcourt for a layup-plus-foul that Schortsianitis followed with free throws to give the Reds their first lead, 6-4. Tunceri and Rakocevic struck from downtown to put Efes back ahead, 8-10. Olympiacos kept feeding Schortsianitis, that followed a put-back layup with free throws to make Efes call timeout at 13-12. Panos Vasilopoulos scored in transition but another triple by Tunceri tied it at 15-15. Thornton capped a 0-9 Efes run with consecutive three-point plays, as the Reds tried to improve their ball circulation with Vujcic and Papaloukas together on court. Papaloukas stepped up with a power layup and fed Vasilopoulos for a dunk that got Olympiacos within 19-21. Kleiza took over with a wild dunk that Vujcic followed with a layup to give the Reds a 23-22 edge, after a 8-1 run. A driving layup by Rakocevic and a buzzer-beating triple by Ender Arslan made Efes restore a 24-27 edge after 10 minutes.

Efes tried to open the court early in the second quarter with Nachbar at power forward. Vujcic scored against Kasun in the low post while a tip-in by Kostas Papanikolaou provided another lead change, 28-27. Vasilopoulos capped a 7-0 run with a corner triple, making Efes call timeout at 31-27. Kasun and Papanikolaou traded baskets while Arslan buried a rainbow triple to keep Efes as close as 33-32. Halperin sank a mid-range jumper, as Olympiacos changed its offense with Schortsianitis back on the floor. Charles Smith nailed a six-meter shot and then followed Kasun's high-flying tip-in with a corner triple to give Efes a 35-39 edge. The Reds kept missing free throws - 7-of-20 that far - and called timeout to adjust its offense. Nachbar sank foul shots while a driving layup by Rakocevic kept Efes ahead, 38-43. Olympiacos could not find the way to the basket and Rakocevic struck from downtown to make it an eight-point game, 38-46. Bourousis sank a triple and had all points in a 8-2 run that brought the Reds back to life, 46-48, at halftime.

Mario Kasun - Efes PilsenBourousis kept pacing Olympiacos with a backdoor layup immediately after the break but Tunceri quickly answered from downtown for a 48-51 score. Santiago scored in the paint, as Efes tried to slow down the game tempo to find better shots now. Rakocevic joined the three-point shootout, as Efes kept playing with outstanding intensity in defense. Rakocevic fed Tunceri for a reverse layup and a corner triple by Nachbar boosted the guests' lead to 52-61. Olympiacos did not panic, however, as Vasilopoulos, Beverley and Bourousis struck from downtown to bring the Reds back to life, 61-63. Kasun dunked it but Kleiza followed a driving layup with a triple to complete the hosts' comeback, 66-65. Efes faced severe foul trouble, as Santiago sat on the bench with 4 while Kasun and Kaya Peker each had 3. Thornton sank a mid-range jumper but an unstoppable Bourousis put Olympiacos back ahead, 68-67. Milos Teodosic sank a mid-range shot, as the game turned into a physical battle. Rakocevic and Kleiza traded free throws while back-to-back layups by Vujcic gave Olympiacos a 76-69 margin after 30 minutes.

Thornton downed a catch-and-shoot three-pointer early in the fourth quarter but Vasilopoulos immediately answered from downtown while Kleiza added a tip-in for a 81-72 score. Efes opted to use quick possessions without much success, missing open shots in crunch time. Free throws by Kleiza gave the Reds their first double-digit lead, 83-72. Nachbar tried to ignite the guests' comeback with a triple but Olympiacos controlled the game tempo with their most experienced players - Papaloukas, Vujcic and Yotam Halperin - together on court. A power layup by Vujcic and a seven-meter bomb by Vasilopoulos broke the game open, 88-75, with 7 minutes left. Smith scored in transition but Papaloukas now controlled the game tempo. He fed Schortsianitis for a dunk and 'Baby Shaq' added free throws for a 93-80 Olympiacos lead. Efes kept trying but everything was said and done already. Olympiacos confirmed its good moment against a tough opponent while Efes must stay strong at home in order to make to the Top 16.

Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"I think that tonight the fans enjoyed a good game. We faced a team that we had not beaten in years, so we really needed this win. We started a bit nervous, but I am happy because we showed quickness and patience at the same time. For example, Sofoklis (Schortsianitis) was nervous in the first half, but returned calm and energetic in the second. One other important thing is that the bench players always encouraged their teammates, even when the things were not going well for us. I think that we had some good plays, both offensively and defensively. We missed a lot of free throws, but that didn't cost us. Schortianitis has made a lot of progress from the line, even though he did not prove that tonight. I know that other teams aim to send him to the line, but he is doing a good job improving this aspect of his game."
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Efes Pilsen
"There were two separate games held tonight, one in the first half and one in the second. We completely controlled the game in the first half and dictated the tempo. After halftime, we made a lot of errors, especially in our end of the court, easy mistakes that cost us a lot. The game tempo changed, we lost the control and had to follow their rhythm. Olympiacos had the chance to shoot many times from the free-throw line to get easy points, but we did not have this opportunity."

Players

BOUROUSIS, IOANNIS
Olympiacos
"Tonight we got scoring from many players and managed to execute well both inside and on the perimeter. After halftime we played better on defense and proved to be more focused. Personally, I felt eager to contribute after my injury. I felt comfortable on the floor and gave as much energy as I could. Efes Pilsen proved tonight that they have a great team with many excellent players. That adds more credit to our win."
RAKOCEVIC, IGOR
Efes Pilsen
"I think we had a great first half, in which we controlled the tempo and the score. But we did not play well, especially on the defensive end, after halftime. We have a bunch of quality players and we are able to have great success at the end of the day. There are times that we play according to our abilities, but we often face trouble. We are working hard to improve. Olympiacos is a deep team with great players such as Kleiza, Teodosic and Bouroussis. But, I think that Papaloukas makes the difference. He steps on court and dictates the rhythm, creating opportunities for his teammates thanks to his excellent court vision. That was what he did tonight, too."
