THE TAKE

The two undefeated teams in Group D go head to head Tuesday night at Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv, Israel, when Hapoel Gilboa/Galil Elyon tries to give its home fans an added reason to cheer by the end of the night: sole possession of first place. Galil will have to beat Aris BSA 2003 first though, and the Greek side does not tend to lay down easily, as it showed in its Week 1 dismantling of Ukrainian powerhouse Azovmash. Gilboa/Galil’s road win in Zagreb was no less impressive, though, and head coach Lior Lubin’s men will look for another strong showing from high-scoring guard Jack McClinton to get Aris on its heels early. The visitors may have a slight advantage on the sidelines, with head coach Sharon Drucker being both a former head coach at Galil and an assistant last season on the same court for Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv. Ido Kozikaro – a throwback to Drucker’s time at Galil and a starter for him when they won the ULEB Cup with Hapoel Jerusalem in 2004 – is a fixture in the paint for the Israeli champ and Tyler Wilkerson and Warren Carter are used to causing plenty of havoc at the forward spot with Leo Lyons also on hand for relief minutes. Big and talented Dejan Borovnak needs to be a factor in his reserve role for the visitors, though center Bryant Dunston will be the one called upon to set an inside presence. High scoring forwards P.J. Tucker, who was the Eurocup Week 1 MVP, and Christos Tapoutos are still the main guys for Aris, but up-and-coming playmaker Gal Mekel did not disappoint in the opener for Hapoel and he and Rodney Green figure to keep improving. It will be interesting to see if Drucker tries to press with a variety of backcourt combinations that rotate veteran Nikos Hatzivrettas, Kostas Sloukas and Kostas Charalampidis. Aris, however, will miss Pierre Pierce for the rest of the regular season due to injury. As stocked as both teams are, expect quite the chess match from the sidelines.

Quotes Head Coaches

DRUCKER, SHARON
Aris BSA 2003
"We have to face tomorrow Hapoel Gilboa Galil here in Jerusalem. They have the advantage of the group because they won the first game in Croatia against Cedevita. We look always at ourselves. We expect our players to come out and play tough and strong. Especially in tomorrow's game because we don’t have with us a very important player like Pierre Pierce. We have starting the preparation for the game today and we will be ready tomorrow."

"We come from a victory in the Eurocup against Azovmash last week in Thessaloniki. We want to make a good performance against Hapoel Gilboa Galil combining it with a victory to improving some elements of our game and go up psychologically. Tomorrow we should be focused forty minutes to take the result we want."

Sloukas split free throws immediately after the break and Carter got Gilboa/Galil even closer, 38-39. Aris used a 0-7 run highlighted by Tucker's three-point play to get some fresh air at 38-46. McClinton downed a bomb from downtown and Carter bettered Tapoutos' layup with a three-point play to get the hosts within 44-48. Hatzivrettas silenced the crowd with a three-pointer and matched Green's free throws with a layup to keep Aris out of trouble, 46-53. McClinton kept pacing Gilboa/Galil with back-to-back triples and a layup by Lyons brought the hosts as close as 54-55. A triple by Yizvori soon tied it at 59-59. Tucker sank a jumper but a shot by Carter and a layup by Lyons completed Gilboa/Galil's comeback, 63-61, after 30 minutes. McClinton nailed his sixth three-pointer and a jumper by Mekel gave Galil a 68-63 edge. Tapoutos scored again and improved Wilkerson's dunk with a triple to get Aris as close as 70-68. A three-point play by Dunston put Aris back ahead at 70-71. Carter sank a jumper but Yizvori and Hatzivrettas traded three-pointer for a 75-74 score. Aris needed a go-to guy and Sloukas stepped up with 5 points in a 0-7 run that gave his team a 77-81 edge. Hatzivrettas joined a three-point shootout but Mekel and McClinton kept Gilboa/Galil alive, 81-84, with under 2 minutes left. Back-to-back baskets by Tapoutos and Hatzivrettas sealed the outcome, 81-88, allowing Aris to seal a very important road win.

Head Coaches

LUBIN, LIOR
Hapoel Gilboa Galil
"We were soft from the tipoff and it hurt us. We spent a lot of energy to come back to the game, and we were left without it for the final minutes. Their guards, especially Hatzivrettas, made big plays that made the difference, but I still think it's our softness that allowed them to win. It seems like a very equal group in which everything can be decided in the last game and with a few buckets, so it means we're still in the race and we're certainly not going to give up after one home loss."
DRUCKER, SHARON
Aris BSA 2003
"We were very well prepared. We dominated this game for three quarters, until McClinton put us in a very difficult spot in the last quarter. We were in a place where we had to step up with our mentality and we managed to face that. Now we know that we have good character. I was curious to see how we're going to bounce back after the loss in the Greek League this weekend, and I'm happy we made it. Our experience played a key role in this win and we knew to recover from the momentum changes. Galil is a very good offensive team. They have high-quality players who can score from all their positions. Their win in Zagreb proved it is a good team. Our ambitions right now are to make it to the next round and then see what's going to happen. Our point guard got injured this week in the Greek League and we'll have to find a new player, but we won't rush to sign a player in a few days; only when we find the right one."

Players

MEKEL, GAL
Hapoel Gilboa Galil
"We had the momentum in the last quarter and we could have won the game, so I feel like we missed a good chance. The three-pointer by Hatzivrettas broke our spirit. We didn't play our best game but we were still close to winning, so that says a good thing for us. We played very well last week and won on the road, but now we lost at home so we'll have to shake up in time and get back on the winning track next week."
TUCKER, ANTHONY
Aris BSA 2003
"Our comeback shows the strength of our team. Galil made some amazing shots, and took the lead in the fourth quarter and that's very expected because usually home teams make runs at some point, but we really stayed together and got a lot of players that can step up. It's a big win for us and we'll try to stay perfect next week as well."
