THE TAKE

Unicaja Malaga sealed Top 16 qualification last week and now looks to extend its six-game winning streak against Montepaschi Siena, which is on a run of four consecutive victories and closing in on a place in the next round. Montepaschi will know before tipoff if it has the possibility to secure a Top 16 berth this week: if Maccabi Electra defeats Elan Chalon on Thursday, a victory for Montepaschi would send the Italian champs through. In any other event, Coach Luca Banchi’s men must wait another week. The star of the show for Montepaschi this season has been Bobby Brown –twice Euroleague MVP of the Week so far and the league’s top scorer. Brown is also one of the best in the competition in three-pointers; he hit 4 triples in the first meeting with Unicaja Malaga, in a game won 91-89 in overtime by the Spanish side. Unicaja has a great three-point shooter of its own in Marcus Williams, and he forms part of a formidable backcourt that also includes Earl Calloway. Williams and Calloway combined for 30 points against Siena last month. Brown turns to Daniel Hackett and Matt Janning to aid him from the perimeter. In the paint, Krunoslav Simon and highlight reel regular James Gist are two big players in a strong frontcourt for Malaga. Big center Kosta Perovic scored a season-high 12 points last week and could be poised for another big game. The Unicaja frontline will go up against Mario Kasun, David Moss, Viktor Sanikidze and Kristjan Kangur. Montepaschi will need to use Brown to dominate the play to and to avoid the kind of late rally from Calloway and co. that turned things around in the first game between the two teams. Montepaschi Siena to the Top 16 with fifth straight win! After having started the season with three consecutive defeats, Montepaschi Siena roared into the Top 16 with a fifth consecutive victory, socking it to visiting Unicaja Malaga 91-72 in Group B on Friday. Siena raised its record to 5-3 to hold third place in the group, while Unicaja fell to 6-2 and second place despite being tied with Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv on wins and losses. Once again, Siena's league-leading three-point shooters were the reason as they hit 13 of 28 attempts from downtown compared to 3 of 14 for Unicaja - a difference of 30 points. Eight different Siena players made at least one three-pointer as David Moss led the winners with 13 points. Benjamin Ortner had 8 of his 12 points in the final quarter. Kristjan Kangur added 11 points, Aleksandar Rasic and Viktor Sanikidze 10 each. Unicaja, which trailed by double digits consistently after giving up 30 points in the first quarter, got a stellar game from Luka Zoric, who made 11 of 13 two-point shots on his way to 29 points. Krunoslav Simon was Unicaja's other double-digit scorer, with 16 points. If three-pointers were the difference, however, they came because Siena dished 26 assists, a team record in its nine Euroleague seasons. Daniel Hackett had 7 of those, while six of his teammates had at least 2 each, putting on a true lesson in unselfish ball movement from Siena.
