Head coach Salvador Maldonaldo's Gran Canaria extended its winning streak to four games with a hard-fought victory at Panionios to move to 7-2. The Spanish side shot 54% from the floor and held Panionios to just 44% for the game while forcing 17 turnovers. Shooting guard Carl English led the way with 17 points and 5 rebounds as all five starters scored in double figures. Playmaker Marcus Norris collected 12 points, 9 assists and 4 steals while forward Sitapha Savane had 16 points and 7 rebounds. While the production from his first five was first-class, Maldonaldo may be concerned about his bench, which produced just 9 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists. The hosts used an 11-0 run in the opening period led by the trio of Nik Caner-Medley, Sitapha Savane and Carl English to take a double-digit lead and would never trail again. However, despite trailing by 17 in the second period, Laurent Foirest and Lamayne Wilson cut the Asvel deficit to 45-40 by halftime. It was more of the same in the second half, as the home team built a 21-point advantage only to see Asvel come back again. Robert Conley helped the visitors within 75-72 early in the fourth quarter and Asvel kept it close from that point. But in the end, Asvel didn’t have enough left in the tank and Gran Canaria’s Marcus Norris and English made the critical free throws to ice the win.
