The Take

A pair of teams eagerly seeing their first win in Group H of the Top 16 clash in Siena, Italy, on Thursday when Montepaschi hosts Fenerbahce Ulker. The Italian champs came up short 88-81 at Cibona despite a Euroleague career-best 18 points from Shaun Stonerook. The Turkish champs were dominated on the offensive end and shot well below their averages in scoring a season-low 48 and losing by a season-high 18 at home against CSKA. The only real good news for Fenerbahce Ulker was the return of swingman Gordan Giricek, whose shooting skills remained intact as he accounted for 13 points off the bench. These two teams met last season in the Quarterfinal Playoffs, with Montepaschi sweeping the best-of-three series as All-Euroleague playmaker Terrell McIntyre and star big man Ksystof Lavrinovic shined. Fenerbahce Ulker head coach Bogdan Tanjevic will hope that a year of experience will help his players in the key head-to-head battles against the home team’s stars. Marques Green and Omer Onan figure to be the two that will spend the most time on McIntyre, while backcourt mates Devin Smith and Damir Kaan Mrsic will challenge Montepaschi’s Henry Domercant and sixth man Rimas Kaukenas. At small forward Montepaschi head coach Simone Pianigiani will send Romain Sato to try to lock down Giricek. The battle in the paint will be an intriguing one as Lavrinovic creates a constant miss-match whether he is playing alongside power forward Stonerook or center Ben Eze. Fener will use its deep rotation of rebounding king Mirsad Turkcan, Emir Preldzic, Gasper Vidmar and centers Oguz Savas and Semih Erden against Siena’s big trio. Montepaschi has won 11 straight and 15 of its last 16 Euroleague home games dating back to the start of last season, which makes Pianigiani’s squad the clear favorite. Although the odds may be against them, Fenerbahce cannot be counted out yet. The team’s youth, energy and depth are all factors that could shake this game and create problems for Montepaschi, especially with both teams knowing how damming a 0-2 start with a home loss would be to their respective quarterfinal hopes.

Montepaschi Siena
  • Montepaschi Siena has won 11 straight and 15 of its last 16 Euroleague home games dating back to the start of last season.
  • All-Euroleague playmaker Terrell McIntyre has made at least 1 three-pointer in eight straight appearances.
  • Montepaschi finished the regular season as the Euroleague leader in steals with 12.4 per game this season and had three players in the competition’s top 10 in that category: McIntyre was tied for first with 2.2 steals per game, Shaun Stonerook was fifth with 2.1 and Romain Sato eighth at 1.9 per game.
  • Guard Henry Domercant needs just 14 more points to reach 1,000 for his Euroleague career.
  • Forward Shaun Stonerook scored a career-high 18 points for Montepaschi last week. His only two double-digit rebounding performances in the Euroleague came against Ulker in the 2005-06 season and his Euroleague career-high of 8 steals was set against Fenerbahce last season.
Fenerbahce Ulker
  • Playmaker Marques Green has recorded a steal in every game this season. He was tied for fifth in the regular season with 2.1 steals per game.
  • Swingman Gordan Giricek has scored in double figures in 14 consecutive Euroleague games, dating back to December 2001 when he was with CSKA. Giricek has scored at least 20 in 12 of those games.
  • Power forward Mirsad Turkcan played for Montepaschi Siena in the 2002-03 season. He helped the club reach the Final Four in Barcelona and was named the 2002-03 Euroleague Top 16 MVP and to the 2002-03 All-Euroleague Second Team. He was the MVP of the week in six out of the 21 games he played for Montepaschi that season and picked up 11 double-doubles. Reserve center Luca Lechthaler is the only member of the current Montpeaschi squad to have played alongside Turkcan.
  • Turkcan is struggling through his worst shooting season from close range in his Euroleague career. He has made 25 of 64 two-pointers for a career-low 39.1%. He has never before averaged below 51%. On the other hand, he is 14 for 30 from downtown (46.7%), which is the second best of his career.
  • The 48 points that Fenerbahce scored last week against CSKA Moscow was the lowest amount in the club’s Euroleague history.

Quotes Head Coaches

Montepaschi Siena
"It's a crucial game for us, because the two following games look impossible on paper against the reigning champs, CSKA. But we have no pressure, because we're happy to be in the Top 16 and we'll take it game by game. They recovered Giricek, their superstar, and they are a tough team to face for us because of their size. Executing good on offense will be crucial to winning the game, like running the break to beat their physical power. I hope that our fans will give us a big push in a game will need big energy by us. We feel them and when they ignite, many things can change."
Fenerbahce Ulker
"There’s a very similar game waiting for us in Siena against Montepaschi Siena, like we had against CSKA Moscow last week. Montepaschi Siena has the same quality of CSKA Moscow and we have to play much better than we did last Thursday to hope to win the game. We lost at home against the last champions and things will be difficult also against Montepaschi Siena. We have to try to find something to surprise Montepaschi. For us, the good thing is that we will have Mirsad Turkcan back in our roster. I hope we can play much better than we did against CSKA Moscow and that’s the only way to hope for a win."

Montepaschi Siena
"We didn't play good in the first game and we know we're in the Top 16, where every team is good. We know we have to get back to the Final Four, but first we need to get back to how we're used to playing. We know it's going to be tough, but we have to start taking one game at a time and see what happens. On Wednesday night, we need to come out playing strong, playing good defense and playing as a team. Fenerbahce has a lot of size over us. They're big and they play good defense. We have to do the same against them, get stops and go on the fastbreak. For me, personally, it's just defense. It's a big part of my game."
Fenerbahce Ulker
"We are a little bit demoralized not only by losing to CSKA Moscow, but the way we played against them. We are not a team that loses a game easily like that. The Montepaschi Siena game represents a chance for us to show our real face. They are as good as is CSKA Moscow and the key to winning the game will be defense for both teams. I hope we also have a better offensive game than we did against CSKA Moscow last week."
Terrell McIntyre - Montepaschi SienaMontepaschi Siena booked its first victory in Top 16 Group H by holding off a frantic comeback by Fenerbahce Ulker for an 87-79 home win. In a rematch of the 2008 Euroleague Quarterfinal Playoffs, Siena used first half runs of 11-0 and 17-4 to take control of the game. Fenerbahce, which was swept in the 2008 series, did not get closer than 11 points in the third quarter and trailed by as many as 24 points in the fourth quarter. But Gordan Giricek spearheaded a 7-24 surge to pull within 7 points in the final minute. It was not enough, however as Ksistof Lavrinovic came up with a big block on a Giricek layup to ice the game. With the win, Montepaschi improved its mark in Group H to 1-1 and extended its home winning streak to 12 games and 15 of the last 16 Euroleague games. Playmaker Terrell McIntyre knocked down 6 of Siena's 13 three-pointers while scoring 24 points and dishing out 6 assists in the victory. Benjamin Eze matched a career-high with 16 points and added 5 rebounds and 4 steals while Rimantas Kaukenas also had 16 points as well as 3 steals. Romain Sato added 12 points; Lavrinovic chipped in 8 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks; and Shaun Stonerook had 5 points, a team-high 8 rebounds and 5 steals. Fenerbahce will face a huge task in reaching the Quarterfinal Playoffs after dropping to 0-2 in the group. Mirsad Turkcan led the way for the Turkish champs with 24 points and 7 rebounds against his former club. while Giricek scored 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter. No other player scored in double figures for Fenerbahce.

Mirsad Turkcan - Fenerbahce UlkerDevin Smith opened the game for the guests with a jumper in the lane. And Turkcan made it 0-5 with a three-point play. McIntyre got Siena on the board with a three-ball. A McIntyre turnover however resulted in a Turkcan breakaway layup for a 3-7 advantage. Sato knocked down another Siena three-pointer but Marques Green answered with a long ball of his own for a 6-10 advantage. Back-to-back baskets by Eze knotted the score before Turkcan's foul shot gave Fenerbahce back the lead 10-11. Sato converted a fine bank shot in the lane and then Eze threw down an alley-oop dunk from McIntyre. And the 14-11 Montepaschi lead led Fener coach Bogdan Tanjevic to call a time-out. Turkcan came out of the time-out with a layup to make it 14-13. But Siena picked up its defense while Fenerbahce also struggled to convert offensively. Eze hit another dunk before the Montepaschi bombers started to heat up. Sato made the first long ball from the right corner and Stonerook followed from the wing. And McIntyre showed he can knock them down as well with a very long three-pointer to make it 25-13 and finish an 11-0 run to finish the first quarter as Fenerbahce failed to convert on final six possessions of the period.

The second quarter started with an unsportsmanlike foul on Kaukenas. Emir Preldzic made both free throws and then hit a driving layup on the following possession to cut the deficit to 25-17. Sato's free throw was Siena's first point of the period. Gasper Vidmar converted an inside layup and Preldzic made two foul shots to bring the guests within 26-21. Lavrinovic however answered with a three-pointer from the right wing to re-establish an eight point lead. The big man dunked home a miss on a break-away layup to make it 31-23. Oguz Savas stepped out and had enough space to knock down a three-ball from the left wing to once again bring Fenerbahce within 31-26. But Siena passed the ball well and found Kaukenas and then Eze threw down another alley-oop from McIntyre to push the lead to 35-26. Savas came down the other end for a dunk in the lane only to see Siena pull away again. Kaukenas made two foul shots and another McIntyre triple pushed the gap to 40-28. Free throws by McIntyre and Kaukenas and an Eze jumper followed and the lead was 48-32 after a Kaukenas triple. Turkcan tried to keep Fenerbahce in the game with another inside basket but Stonerook was awarded two foul shots with no time left on the clock and Siena went into intermission ahead 51-34.

Rimantas Kaukenas - Montepaschi SienaOmer Onan started the second half with a tough basket in the lane but missed the chance for a three-point play. And Smith's layup trimmed the margin to 51-38. Henry Domercant hit 2 free throws and then McIntyre's third three of the game pushed Montepaschi back ahead by 17 points. Fenerbahce remained committed on getting the ball into the paint and Vidmar scored a tough basket and then Smith got out for a quick transition basket. Vidmar further cut the deficit with a put-back dunk to make it 56-45. However, Eze answered with a basket in the lane and then Kaukenas hit a driving layup and the lead was back to 60-45. Green hit a tough running jumper for Fenerbahce, but McIntyre again hit from long, long range to increase the advantage to 63-47. Fenerbahce was unable to cut into the deficit and Arriel McDonald's jumper just before the third-quarter buzzer gave Montepaschi its biggest cushion to that point, 69-51.

Sato opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer and McDonald's pull-up jumper made it 74-51. Semih Erden hit in the paint, but Lavrinovic's three-ball from the right wing pushed the gap to 24 points, 77-53. But Siena would let up its intensity and Fenerbahce would fight back into the game. Damir Kaan Mrsic answered right back with a three from the right corner only to see Stonerook toss the inbounds pass to a streaking Kaukenas for a dunk and a 79-56 lead. Fenerbahce did score 5 straight points on an Erden dunk and Giricek triple, trimming the gap to 79-61 and bringing Montepaschi head coach Simone Pianigiani to call a timeout. Smith further cut the deficit to 79-63 with a lay-in but McIntyre had space for another triple and it was 82-63. Montepaschi struggled to execute on offense and Giricek hit a three-point play and Turkcan had two layups on the fast break to cut the gap to 82-70 with just over three minutes left. An Eze lay-in after a pick-and-roll with McIntyre finally gave the hosts another basket. But Turkcan and Giricek hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit into single digits. And Giricek's foul shot made it 84-77 with less than two minutes to play. McIntyre made it a 10-point game again with yet another three-pointer before Turkcan's foul shots trimmed it back to 87-79. But Lavrinovic blocked a driving layup attempt by Giricek in the final minute that took the steam out of the guests.

Head Coaches

Montepaschi Siena
"It was a great and intense game. We played the first three quarters at our best. We played the game as we wanted, moving the ball on offense very well. We could have closed the game with a double-digit margin, but I cannot say anything to my players, because we arrived a little bit tired in the last quarter, and also Fenerbahce made big plays. I'm very happy for our approach to the game."
Fenerbahce Ulker
"It's the second time in this Top 16 that we started the game really bad, a real disaster, leaving a big advantage to our opponents. Tonight we came back, but it was again too late. I'm not happy because I think we can play better, but you cannot give this kind of advantage to a team like Siena, which is one of the candidates to arrive to the end, if they continue to play with this intensity. Our road is full of hurdles now in the Top 16, but we'll try to stay in the run till the end. We had bad luck this season with a lot of injuries and players to insert during the season after they remained sidelined for a long time."

Montepaschi Siena
"The most important thing tonight was to win the game. We played focused and tried to be more aggressive than in our debut in Zagreb. They were back, but we never gave up, we know it was too important the win. Also we tried to have a good points differential that could be decisive to advance. Every Euroleague game is really tough, you have to play at your best every minute, but all the team was aggressive tonight and looked for me in many situations and helped me to play good on the pick-and-roll to find decisive baskets."
Fenerbahce Ulker
"You cannot allow a strong team like Siena to get such a big margin. We again started a game bad, then we came back, but it was too late. You cannot play at your best just for part of the game. I think we can do better."
