THE STAKES

Last week’s losers of the Eurocup opener face off in a crucial game to stay close to the top. Cibona suffered the largest loss, and its defense has to improve to win on the road. Hapoel Jerusalem will benefit from its fans at Goldberg arena. The two previously met in the 1997-98 Euroleague second stage, each taking a win at home.

THE TAKE

Hapoel needs to improve its three-point shooting percentage and the guests need more defensive intensity after getting only two steals in the first game. Hapoel big men Brian Randle and Jarvis Varnado could play a decisive role if they can contain Cibona’s Goran Suton and Andrija Zizic. The one-on-one matchup between DJ Strawberry and Demonte Harper promises to be the most spectacular of the game.

Quotes Head Coaches

VRANKOVIC, JOSIP-JERKO
KK Cibona
"After a poor start in the Eurocup we are working hard to get ready for the game against Hapoel Jerusalem. Hapoel has the quality, although we have a tight schedule, we will do our best to prepare ourselves for Tuesday. I am sure that our approach to the game will be better. Antwain Barbour is still not fully recovered and I am not sure if he will play on Tuesday."

"Coach gave us some information about Hapoel Jerusalem. They play aggressive at home, but we will surely try to present more aggressiveness than last week against Gravelines. We want to forget the first game and show the better play on Tuesday. We expect a hot atmosphere which is always stimulating."
Brian Randle - Hapoel Jerusalem (photo Olexiy Naumov)Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem celebrated its debut win in the 2011-12 Eurocup season with an 89-73 victory over Cibona Zagreb in Group A on Tuesday evening at Goldberg Arena in Jerusalem, Israel. With the win Hapoel improved to 1-1, while Cibona dropped to 0-2. A big 20-0 run in the second quarter allowed Hapoel to take a double-digit lead and walk to the half time break up 14. Cibona managed to cut the margin by half inside the closing quarter, but Jarvis Varnado and Dan Grunfeld helped Hapoel to stay on top. Brian Randle led Hapoel with 16 points, Varnado had 13 points and 7 rebounds, Yuval Naimy added 12 and Grunfeld finished with 11. Andrija Zizic was the top scorer for Cibona with 16 points and added 7 boards, Davor Kus scored 12 and Damjan Rudez collected 11 points.

Hapoel appeared first on the scoreboard, but Rudez and Brian Chase kept Cibona on top for the first minutes with a 10-12 lead. Guni Izraeli with his first assist helped Luke Jackson nail a three pointer before Grunfeld connected a pair of shots as Hapoel took a 19-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. Izraeli stepped up early in the second quarter and with his pick-and-roll plays helped Hapoel take off with points and assists. He scored 7 points in a row and dished an assist before Varnado finished good ball movement with a monster jam and Hapoel was up 30-16 after 15 unanswered points. Jackson and then Randle added more points to cap a 20-0 run. Tomislav Zubcic broke the drought with a three-pointer and an assist for a corner three by Rudez and Hapoel called a timeout still up by 15 with 3:14 in the first half. Zubcic locked the first half with another three and Hapoel held a 47-33 gap after one half of basketball.

Zizic together with Kus pulled Cibona to within 11, but a big fast break block followed by another big dunk by Varnado kept Hapoel with a double-digit lead. Yet not for long as Kus and Rudez walked to the line and with 6 hits in a row made it just 60-53 with 2:43 to play in the third. However that's as close as the visitors got. Jackson with a three-point play and Naimy with a steal he finished with a layup lifted the gap to 67-53 with the third quarter buzzer. Hapoel added points in the paint and when Grunfeld scored from behind the arc, it became a 19 point game, 74-55, and Cibona was unable to make another comeback from there.

Head Coaches

KATTASH, ODED
Hapoel Jerusalem
"We won the game through our defense. We weren't so focused on defense in the first minutes but sometimes it takes time for our players to get in the momentum. We have a very tough group and we need to at least win all our home games. We have to be focused if we want to win games in such a high level as Eurocup. At some points in the game we played with a short line-up of four guards and that helped us to score a lot of points and create the gap that won the game.
VRANKOVIC, JOSIP-JERKO
KK Cibona
"We had a good first quarter but like all season we had a problem in the second quarter. We're a new team and right now it's still difficult for us to play the same level for 40 minutes. Even when we win we have this problem. The second quarter decided the game. We played much better in the second half but to comeback to the game on the road against such a good team as Hapoel is always difficult."

Players

VARNADO, JARVIS
Hapoel Jerusalem
"It took me time to get used to things here. It was a slow process but I'm learning and getting better day by day. We need to play strong to win and that's what we did today. Brian Randle is an excellent player and I learn a lot from him. It's fun to have him on our side. I'm very happy with this win and happy our fans witnessed our first Eurocup win."
KUS, DAVOR
KK Cibona
"We have a problem the entire season to play well for 40 minutes. This is the problem we had tonight too. We allowed Hapoel to take a big run in the second quarter and couldn't recover from that in time. We came back but it was too difficult to close the entire gap. Hapoel is a good team. We hope to get our first win next week."
