THE TAKE

Maccabi Elite welcomes a European legend when Dejan Bodiroga leads Lottomatica Roma into Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv, Israel, for a Group B clash on Thursday night. Bodiroga has faced Maccabi in many memorable clashes, including three successive Final Fours from 2000 to 2002, when he was with Panathinaikos. The last time they met, Bodiroga led Winterthur Barcelona to a home victory over Maccabi during the 2004-05 regular season. Both teams started this season strong, but suffered disappointing setbacks in Week 2. Maccabi opened with a thrilling overtime win against Unicaja, but fell to Partizan on the road last week. In both games, Maccabi gave up 100 points or more. Roma trumped Partizan at home on opening night, but followed that with an loss at Union Olimpija. Despite numerous offseason moves, Maccabi remains a top offensive power, leading the Euroleague with 98.5 points per game, while averaging a league-low 10 turnovers. On defense, Maccabi has the most fouls committed (53) and ranks fourth in steals (15 spg.). Roma's defense has allowed it to be competitive despite modest offensive numbers. Roma averages 30 points fewer per game than Maccabi, is last in the league in two-point shooting (38%) and has passed for the fewest assists (7 apg.). However the club is among the top offensive rebounding sides (13 orpg.) and leads the league in steals (18.5 spg.). The visitors will surely be ready for Maccabi's biggest star, All-Euroleague first team center Nikola Vujcic, whom Roma head coach Jasmin Repesa coached as a youngster at KK Split and later with the Croatian national team. Roma will use several big men against Vujcic, including Loukas Mavrokefalides, Luca Garri and Ognjen Askrabic. An exciting matchup brews in the backcourt, where Maccabi rookie Will Bynum will face David Hawkins and Yotam Halperin challenges Roma playmaker Vlado Ilievski. The game could ultimately be decided by Maccabi's ability to defend Bodiroga. Rookie Lior Eliyahu is likely to start, but Simas Jasaitas, Jamie Arnold, Sharon Shason and newcomer Noel Felix should all get their chances too. Maccabi is always a favorite at home – it was 12-1 at Nokia Arena last season – but both Repesa and Bodiroga have won there in the past, making this battle one to watch.

Quotes Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"I see progress in our team, because we play better and better each game that goes by. On the other hand, we know that a game against a team like Roma will be difficult. Their big loss in Italian League doesn't say anything. We'll have to be careful of Dejan Bodiroga and Vlado Ilievski, and I'm sure Roma will do a great scouting job on us, because that's the way coach Jasmin Repesa works. We hope to keep our home record perfect, and to give our fans a reason to celebrate after the game."

"We've put the loss to Partizan behind us already and are looking forward to the next game. Roma is a big name, and you cannot underestimate them at all. We hope to keep grouping together and finding our chemistry to get back on the winning track in the Euroleague. The win over Hapoel in the Israeli League gives us a lot of confidence, especially with the great support from the fans. We'd like to keep it up. We have two home games in the Euroleague now, and we want to win both of them. Roma is the first target, and we are all focused on that now."
Rodney Buford - Maccabi Elite Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv regained some confidence with a 78-65 Group B home win over Lottomatica Roma on Thursday. Maccabi used a 14-0 second-quarter run to take control and withstood a late Dejan Bodiroga-led charge to win. Maccabi improved to 2-1 and shares second place with Cibona and Joventut. Roma fell to 1-2. Lior Eliyahu shined in the early going and Will Bynum took over as Maccabi built a 19-point lead in the third quarter. Bynum led Maccabi with 19 and Eliyahu added 18 on 8-of-9 shooting. Rodney Buford and Derrick Sharp came off the bench for 14 and 13 points, respectively, while Nikola Vujcic finished with 8 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. The legendary Dejan Bodiroga led Roma with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists after getting a standing ovation when introduced. Vlado Ilievski added 16 and Ognjen Askrabic 11 in defeat.

Maccabi won the tip and after drawing two fouls scored first on a Yotam Halperin jumper. Askrabic scored Roma's first point from the line. The hosts surged ahead on three Eliyahu baskets inside, assisted in turn by Vujcic, Bynum and Halperin to take a 12-6 lead. Ilievski and Bodiroga soon took control of the tempo and shook Maccabi's confidence with back-to-back triples that tied it, 12-12. Askrabic added a bucket inside to give Roma its first lead, 12-14, causing Maccabi coach Neven Spahija to call for timeout. Bynum fed Eliyahu to tie the game again, but Ilievski answered with a three-pointer and a fastbreak basket to put the visitors up by 5. Eliyahu missed twice from the line, but Alessandro Tonolli was off-target also on the other end, allowing Vujcic's hook to end the first period with his team down 16-19.

Roma continued to slow things down in the second, except for the rare fast break opportunity, which turned into a Tonolli slam. Little Derrick Sharp scored underneath after his first attempt was batted away, but the Maccabi attack continued to struggle in half-court sets. Bodiroga added a basket in the paint and Buford fired in a short jumper to keep his team within 3. By now, Maccabi's confidence was so low that even when transition opportunities presented themselves the team had trouble converting. But aside from a Loukas Mavrokefalidis basket, Lottomatica was also not in an offensive rhythm. Vujcic found a cutting Buford for a three-point play to tie the score at 25-25 midway through the period and then Eliyahu stepped up to return the momentum Maccabi's way. The first-year forward converted a pair of free throws and then took a steal to the hoop for a layup to put Tel Aviv up by 4 and cause Roma coach Jasmin Repesa to take a timeout. It had little affect as a Bynum three game Maccabi its biggest lead yet and Eliyahu capped a 14-0 run with a one-handed layup to make it 34-25. Ilievski got Roma back with a three and after a broken alley-oop attempt from Vujcic to Buford, Jacapo Giachetti added a pair of free throws to get Roma within 36-30 at halftime.

Dejan Bodiroga - Lottomatica RomaA supercharged Bynum came out for the second half ready to end things quickly. Bynum sniped a three on the first possession, and after a Buford one-hander, added another triple to cap a 9-0 spurt that gave Maccabi a 45-30 advantage. Bodiroga's jumper in the lane after three minutes followed by Mavrokefalidis's offensive rebound and basket showed signs of life from the visitors, but Bynum drilled another three to keep Tel Aviv in control. His next move was a penetration and dish to Buford for a triple that gave Maccabi its biggest lead yet, 53-34. But Bodiroga and co. weren't done yet. The former Euroleague MVP scored from outside, Askrabic fired in a three and then Bodiroga did the same as Roma trimmed the deficit to 11. But after Sharp stripped Bodiroga for an easy score and then drilled his first three of the night as the arena erupted. David Hawkins and Tonolli added points from the line that ended the period with Maccabi leading 58-46.

The fourth quarter opened with a fast pace that favored Maccabi, as Vujic and Sharp added to the hosts lead. When Vujcic fed Eliyahu for a short jumper in the lane, Maccabi was ahead by 18. Lottomatica picked up its defensive intensity, but short of one fast break basket for Bodiroga, all it got them was foul trouble. Even when all looked lost, Roma's superstar never quit, as Bodiroga out-wrestled the bigger Yaniv Green for an offensive rebound and drew a foul. His hustle inspired an Ilievski triple and then Askrabic rattled one in off the glass to bring Roma within 67-55. After a timeout, Bodiroga sank another jumper as did Mavrokefalidis as the fans faces began to turn. Sharp restored a double-digit lead from the line and Bodiroga's next attempt was off as the tide started to turn back Tel Aviv's way. Halperin threw Eliyahu a perfect pass for a two-handed alley-oop slam and Buford scored another bucket as the hosts wrapped up the win.

Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"I want to congratulate my team. I knew it was going to be tough and that Repesa was going to prepare something for us. After the first 10 minutes, we played with much more confidence, and I think we made advantage in that period. After that it was very difficult, but in the end we were a better team, and deserved this victory. The only thing I'm not happy about is that we made too many turnovers. The rest is good enough. Next week we'll try to make one more step forward. Our game in open court is much better than the set offense. The first half we couldn't run because they played long possessions."
REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"Congratulations to Maccabi. They played better this game. But congratulations to my team too. Compared to our last games, I saw progress. Maccabi won with breaks in the second and third quarters. Maybe because we have young players who haven’t been at this level before and because Maccabi was at home, we had trouble controlling the game. You have to know how to control the pace on offense and defense. Vujcic is their playmaker. There is no other big man that plays like him. He can score inside, outside or pass, so we tried to stop him with Tonolli, who I think did a great job. We need to be patient to improve. It’s not easy to come to Tel Aviv and beat Maccabi."

Players

ELIYAHU, LIOR
Maccabi Elite
"We played better tonight, but we need to keep on progressing. I'm glad the coach gave me a lot of confidence. Playing in front of these fans is amazing. It's not easy to play against Roma. We had to stay focused, in order not to lose the margin we gained. I hope we'll keep to play better and better and win."
HAWKINS, DAVID
Lottomatica Roma
"Maccabi is a good team. You have to play very well in order to beat them at home. We were outrebounded by them. We made a run but they replied with their own run, and we never recovered from that."
