THE TAKE

BC Triumph welcomes Power Electronics Valencia to Moscow in a clash of unbeaten sides with the victor ready to claim sole possession of first place in Group B. The game has all the ingredients to be one of the marquee matchups of Week 3. Both teams are offensive machines. Triumph is sharing the ball at a rate of 20 assists per game, while Valencia is shooting almost 70% from 2-point range due to its huge frontline and guards who love to penetrate. BC Triumph, however, boats one the strongest starting lineups in the competition. Pavel Sergeev and Brion Rush complement one another perfectly in the backcourt as Sergeev is among the top five in the competition in assists and Rush is a top 10 scorer. Valencia is no slouch on the perimeter either . Floor general Rafa Martinez is a natural leader and tough for smaller point guards to defend due to his size and aggressiveness when going to the rim. And Rush will have another pure scorer to duel with in youngster Nando De Colo, whose 16.5 points per game tops Valencia’s score sheet. Supersub Egor Vyalstev comes off the bench for Triumph and will square off against Valencia’s sharpshooter Thomas Kelati and Marko Marinovic. At forward, the hosts deploy multi-talented Valery Likhodey and Konstantin Nesterov. While defensive expert Florent Pietrus will try to lock Likhodey down, Valencia will look to cause serious matchup problems with up-and-coming star Victor Claver, who can use his power to score inside, his quickness to drive and his shooting skills to score from the perimeter. In addition to the two tall, athletic forwards, Valencia has Kosta Perovic and Matt Nielsen at center. Perovic is a monster in the middle and the game could very well hinge on the winner of his battle with Paul Miller and Sergey Varlamov in the low blocks. Even though Triumph is playing in front of its home fans, if any one team has the firepower and muscle to overcome the hostile crowd, it is Valencia.

"In my opinion, Power Electronics Valencia is the favorite to win Group B and one of the best teams in the Spanish League. Valencia has very strong perimeter players, as well as a tall player at the '3' position like Victor Claver. It also features very strong, experienced centers like Kosta Perovic and Serhiy Lishchuk, as well as talented players like Nando de Colo and Thomas Kelati. Valencia is a very fast, athletic team that knows how to use the strength of its frontcourt and that shooting skills of its backcourt. It is very hard to find weaknesses in this team, but their game against Le Mans shows that it is possible to beat Valencia. I met Neven Spahija on the court several years ago, when I coached CSKA and he worked for Cibona. He has taken a big step forward as a coach from those years. He has been working successfully in Spain for several seasons."

"We have won both Eurocup games so far without getting a big advantage, which means that all opponents on our group are very strong. Regarding Valencia, they just lost against Real Madrid this season but stays as one of the best teams in the Spanish League. They have a lot of experiended players in their roster and a very famous coach like Neven Spahija. I have never played against Valencia. It will be very interesting for me. We will fight all game long and hope that our fans will help us. I am sure they will be our sixth player on the court supporting Triumph."
Nando De Colo - Power Electronics ValenciaIn a battle of unbeatens, Power Electronics Valencia walked away from Triumph Lyubertsy with a 59-67 victory and claimed sole possession of first place in Group B at 3-0. Valencia used a 4-15 run bridging the end of the first period and the opening minutes of the second to open up a 14-point advantage. The visitors extended their lead to 24 by the end of 20 minutes by going on to outscore Triumph 9-29 over the course of the second quarter. But what looked like a blowout was anything but that. Triumph mounted a furious comeback attempt and completely dismantled the visitors by a partial of 24-4 in the third period to breath new life back into the contest. After Triumph tied the game at 56-56 with 4 minutes to go, Valencia turned to its young star, Nando de Colo, who scored 9 points down the stretch to win the game. De Colo and Matt Nielsen lead the winners with 13 points apiece while Rafa Martinez and Serhiy Lishchuk added 10 points each. Brion Rush had a game-high 17 points for Triumph, and Valery Likhodey chipped in with 14 points in the losing effort.

Triumph’s Konstantin Nesterov opened the scoring from the free throw line by drawing a quick foul from Kosta Perovic. Martinez and Perovic strung together a pair of field goals before Rush struck from downtown. Martinez found Matt Nielson for a layup, but Alexandr Bashminov answered with his first basket in the Eurocup for his new team. Victor Claver went 1-of-2 from the foul line, and Lishchuk added 2 more the next trip down for Valencia. Nesterov hit back with a dunk, and moments later newly signed center Aleksandar Bashminov scored a 2-plus-1 to tie the game at 11-11. Lishchuk and Bashminov traded slams for their sides, but Marko Marinovic sent Valencia into the second period holding a 13-17 lead with a three-pointer. Claver and Lishchuk rolled off 4 points before Nesterov put back an offensive board. Marinovic kept Valencia rolling by draining his second three-pointer, and Claver game the visitors a 15-26 lead with a layup. Triumph called consecutive timeouts to try and break Valencia’s momentum but to no avail as Martinez nailed a three for the 14-point lead. Bashminov finally scored for Triumph with a dunk. Rush followed with a field goal, but Martinez countered with a two-pointer after a Valencia timeout and Thomas Kelati added a three-pointer moments later. Lishchuk and Nando De Colo hit back-to-back triples to send Valencia into the break up 22-46.

Rush hit a three-pointer and on the very next possession the Triumph guard assisted Likhodey for another long-range bomb to start the second half. Likhodey added a layup to cap the quick 8-0 burst for the hosts before Perovic hit a free throw. The defenses then clamped down and neither team could buy bucket. Rush eventually drained a three to get Triumph going again and Likhodey added a layup plus foul before Nielsen scored a two-pointer, 36-49. Rush made a bucket and moments later added a pair of free throws to get the lead down to single digits. Andrey Mateyunas and Sergey Varlamov each scored inside, Nielsen went 1-of-2 from the line, but Mayetunas made another layup to reduce the deficit to just 46-50 after three quarters. Nielsen hit a pair of free throws to begin the fourth quarter. Varlamov and Nielsen then traded field goals before Likhodey dropped a three-pointer to shrink the deficit to just 3 points. Nielsen, staying aggressive, hit inside, but Rush immediately responded with a layup. Both teams went cold till, with four minutes to play, Pavel Sergeev tied the game 56-56 on a three-pointer. De Colo made a pair of free throws and then added a layup to give Valencia a 2-point lead heading into the final two minutes. Claver made 2 foul shots before De Colo then hit a huge three to open up a 56-65 lead before Nesterov also scored from behind the arc, but by then it was too little, too late for Triumph.

"Power Electronics Valencia was a very strong opponent - individually and as a team. It was very hard to find their weaknesses but we had noticed that Valencia struggled to play its game against aggressive opponent. Our main goal was to play aggressive but unfortunately we didn't have a strong start, especially in defense. We improved in the second half when we played more aggressive, made good runs and hit some easy shots. I thanked my team after the game for their good effort in the second half and told then that the reason why we lost was our early performance and some crucial mistajes in the fourth quarter. We have faced some injury problems and only had 7 players available in practice this week. Likhodey and Sergeev had just one practice with the team the day before the game against Valencia. We signed Bashminov and he just made his debut with the team. He had not played any game in the last half year and is not in his best shape, but showed his desire to fight under the rims."

"We were the best team tonight. Our bad third quarter made the game more interesting, but we managed to be patient in the end and make the most out of our talent."
