THE TAKE

BC Kyiv have proven all the critics of Ukrainian basketball wrong as the Group H sole leaders go for a 3-0 start when they host Pau-Orthez. Head coach Tomo Mahoric's Ukrainian team produced their second straight solid victory in beating ASK Riga at home. The ULEB Cup debutants Kyiv hit 52% from the field while holding the Latvians to 37% shooting. Mahoric added shooting guard Manuchar Markoishvili to the starting lineup in favor of Marcus Faison, and he got good production from both players. Point guard Pooh Jeter and small forward Artur Drozdov both had excellent games and will be needed if the Ukrainians want to continue their impressive run. Euroleague regulars Pau-Orthez picked up a much-needed victory last week at home against fellow usual Euroleague powers Benetton Tamoil to improve to 1-1. Head coach Olivier Cousin only had one player score in double figures (18 points from power forward Terence Dials), but eight other players had either eight or nine points. And the team hit 51% of their shots while committing just 10 turnovers and out-rebounding the Italians 35-25. Cousin's troops have now out-rebounded their opponents by at least 10 in each game, but they will need that superior inside work to knock off the Ukrainians. Also helpful would be a repeat of the 42% shooting allowed against Treviso.

BC Kyiv remained perfect alone atop Group H after a resounding 91-55 victory at home over Pau-Orthez to improve to 3-0. Manuchar Markoishvili led all scorers with 27 points while Marcus Faison added 15 points for the winners and Artur Drozdov had 13 points and nine rebounds. With their home fans behind them, the Ukrainians jumped ahead in the first quarter and never looked back, giving up only nine points in the third period. Pau-Orthez fell to 1-2 in Group H despite 17 points from Terence Dials. And David Young added 11 points for the French team, which was out-rebounded 48-24 and committed 22 turnovers. Kyiv hopes to move to 4-0 next week at Lukoil Academic while Pau-Orthez plays at ASK Riga.

Viacheslav Kravtsov opened the scoring for Kyiv with a free throw, which sparked a 7-0 run for the Ukrainians. Antoine Mendy answered with a three-pointer but Kyiv pulled ahead 12-3. Marcus Faison's basket gave Tomo Mahoric's team its first double-digit lead at 16-5. The hosts also led 18-7 and 21-10 though Maxiliano Stanic did all he could to keep up with Kyiv. Jacobs Jaacks' two foul shots made it 29-16 after one period. Markoishvili pushed the lead to 33-16 and Pau did not get closer than that until Thierry Rupert's basket trimmed the deficit to 37-26. But Kravtsov increased the margin to 46-28 just before the break. Pooh Jeter opened the second half with a free throw for a 19-point lead and Rupert finally scored again for the French only to see Markoishvili knock down a three-pointer for a 50-30 advantage. Three more long balls and three more baskets by Markoishvili and the gap was 74-37 going into the fourth. And Joshua Davis' basket with four minutes left saw Kyiv build a 42-point lead - 81-39. And the rest of the Ukrainian bench finished off the game.

Head Coaches

MAHORIC, TOMO
BC Kyiv
"The most important thing for us tonight was not to lose focus after we got the lead at the end of the first quarter. I've seen this often in games of this level – a team gains a lead, loses focus and blows the game. I am glad this did not happen to us and we managed to extend it even more."
OLIVIER, COUSIN
Pau-Orthez
"We expected to face a difficult opponent and this game turned out to be a hard one. We had problems with conditioning, allowing Kyiv to outrebound us."

Players

FAISON, MARCUS
BC Kyiv
"I have a great experience playing in the ULEB Cup and I never lose focus in games of this caliber. Tonight we’ve shown why we are the group favorites."
