THE TAKE

Siauliai goes searching for victory number two in Group A as the Lithuanian team welcomes winless Guildford Heat. Siauliai knocked off KK Bosna last week for its first ever ULEB Cup win, improving its record to 1-2. Head coach Robertas Kuncaitis's team was able to pull away late thanks to some clutch foul shooting by reserve small forward Mantas Ruikis. Kuncaitis had to be happy with Antonio Grant scoring 18 points in just 22 minutes of action, though the American small forward fouled out early in the fourth after first half foul trouble. Playmaker Jose Olivero took over the scoring duties while Grant was out and small forward Donatas Zavackas and Ruikis helped Siauliai to 42% from three-point range. Kuncaitis's troops did a good job defending the long ball, holding Bosna to just 19% from downtown. A repeat performance should be enough for Siauliai to even its record. The British team Guildford Heat dropped to 0-3 by losing at Alba Berlin. Head coach Paul James's team was never really in the game, falling behind by 11 points in the first quarter and allowing the Germans to shoot 52% from the field for the game. Small forward Tony Dorsey took over most of the play-making duties and collected 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. But James just did not have enough firepower - though center John Nottley had 11 points and shooting guard James Jones chipped in 14 off the bench. It did not help that small forward Dean Williams had a bad night with 2-of-6 shooting and five turnovers. James knows his team must find some new drive to pick up its first victory despite clearly is missing its leader, guard Brian Dux, who was seriously hurt in an early-season car accident and remains hospitalized.

Mantas Ruikis - Siauliai Siauliai tooks its second win in this ULEB Cup season as it defeated the Guildford Heat at home by 87-72 on Tuesday evening. Despite a rough start in the first quarter, the guests kept pushing until they trimmed the difference down to 10 points in the last period, but a final burst by Siauliai broke the game open. Now, the Lithuanian team has an even 2-2 record in Group A while the English team remains winless with a 0-4 mark. Mantas Ruikis led the winners with 22 points including 4 of 8 triples. Donatas Zavackas added 18, and Antonio Grant and Saulius Kuzminskas posted 13 apiece. For the Heat, Tony Dorsey had 20 points and 10 boards while Michael Martin added 17 points and 9 boards.

Tony Dorsey - Guildford HeatAntonio Grant started strong for Siauliai as six points by him made it soon 10-3 and Donatas Zavackas joined him for the 14-3. James Jones and Nerijus Karlikanovas had threes for the Heat but after 10 minutes, the hosts dominated by a clear 24-10. Siauliai opened the second quarter with three triples by Mantas Ruikis, Marius Prekevicius and Zavackas to boost the lead to 20 points, 33-13. Michael Martin and Jones however, sparked a Guildford Heat burst in the following plays as the guests managed to trim the deficit down to 37-26 after two Tony Dorsey free throws. Tomas Rinkevicius and Grant kept Siauliai going as the game reached the break with a 44-31 edge for the hosts. The game resumed with six points for each side as the gap was maintained in 13 points, as Siauliai was keeping the steals-turnovers rate in the positive end which allowed the hosts to keep control of the game. Martin, Jones and Dorsey maintained the Heat down by around 12 points as the hosts obviously weren't having it as easy as at the beginning, 57-45. A final 2-5 run in the period allowed the guests to trim the score down to 63-52 after 30 minutes. The start of the decisive quarter was marked by a 6-0 Siauliai run by Prekevicius, Ruikis and Kuzminskas that seemed to launch the hosts for good. Dorsey kept scoring for Guildford Heat but a late 7-0 run by Siauliai made it 81-67 and the hosts cruised to a new home win.

Head Coaches

KUNCAITIS, ROBERTAS
Siauliai
"I am happy with the result but I am not so happy about the way we played. We started great and gained control of the game, but when I benched a few players from the starting five we got off the rhythm. But I needed to give my reserve players experience of ULEB Cup games. After a good start we thought that all the job was done but you have to play hard until final buzzer if you want to win in this tournament. One of our biggest problems is our big guys who struggle in defense. One of our tasks was forcing our opponents to play one-on-one instead of double defense when they could hit open shots from outside the arc. We tried different line-ups. It was the moment when even Donatas Zavackas was playing center. After the game we praised the Lord and asked him to prevent us from being stuck-up."
JAMES, PAUL JULIAN
Guildford Heat
“We lost the game in the first quarter when they gained a double-digit lead. In the second half we played much better. We played aggressive at the boards but it was too late. We analyzed Siauliai game and knew how to play against them. Our plan was simple. We wanted to control the situation in the paint, win the boards and avoid mistakes. Tonight we played better than in previous games but it wasn't enough. I think we lost because of poor defense. Lithuanians play aggressive and fast basketball. We will have to do big job if we want to beat them at home."

"We all knew that Heat is not the strongest team in our group. They've lost all games in ULEB Cup so far. It was hard to find motivation for the game, when you were sure that you're going to win it. But at the same time you know, you have no right to lose."
KARLIKANOVAS, NERIJUS
Guildford Heat
"We played not so bad kepping in mind that Siauliai is a really strong team. I think we played basketball that we are capable at the moment. We have the same problem over and over. We start slowly and play much better in the second half."
