THE TAKE

This season's surprise team, Lietuvos Rytas, will look to remain in first place in Group B when it hosts Cibona Zagreb on Wednesday in Vilnius, Lithuania. L. Rytas, playing in the Euroleague for the first time, is the hottest team in the competition, carrying a five-game winning streak. Now the Group B co-leader will look to avenge its first and worst defeat of the season, 68-57 at Cibona on opening night. Scoonie Penn led the Croatian champs with 18 points in that game. Cibona (4-3) is often led by Penn (16 ppg., 3.1 steals), who had his best game of the season last week, with 27 points and 5 steals as Cibona upset Efes Pilsen on the road. Penn won the Week 7 MVP honor for his performance. L. Rytas (5-2) topped Prokom Trefl last week 82-69 as playmaker Roberts Stelmahers (11.1 ppg., 4.1 apg.) led four players in double figures with 17 points. Cibona is the lowest-scoring team in the league with a winning record (68.1 ppg.), which is a tribute to the team defense (72.9 ppg.). However, L. Rytas is also among the top defensive sides (71 ppg.). As a result, any offensive outburst from either team could prove to be the difference. The hosts will be without big man Haris Mujezinovic (11.2 ppg.), who will miss 3 weeks with a groin injury. His absence will mean more minutes for foul-prone center Robertas Javtokas (9.4 ppg., 6.4 rpg.) and Matt Nielsen (7.7 ppg.), who hasn't scored more than 8 in any game aside from his 27-point outburst against Barcelona in Week 3. Cibona will counter with Bennett Davison (10 ppg., 6.5rpg.), Mate Skelin and, off the bench, Damir Markota (11.2 ppg., 54.1% 3FG, 4.7 rpg.), the team's second-best scorer. L. Rytas's top scorer is swingman Fred House (13 ppg.), while young Simas Jasaitis (10.5 ppg.) complements him well at the small forward. Cibona's Davor Kus (9.4 ppg.) will have his hands full with his defensive assignments against the L. Rytas backcourt. Defense promises to be the name of the game in this match-up. A lot can come down to Penn and Stelmahers, and which of them creates better for himself and his teammates.

The good times continue to roll in Vilnius, Lithuania, where Lietuvos Rytas remained unstoppable in Group B with a blowout 80-52 victory over visiting Cibona on Thursday for a sellout crowd of 11,000 at Siemens Arena. Its sixth consecutive win gave L. Rytas a 6-2 record and assured it at least a continued share of first place in Group B going into 2006. Cibona dropped to 4-4 but will play four of its remaining six regular season games at home, where it is still undefeated. Robertas Javtokas did it all for the winners with 15 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks. Roberts Stelmahers added 14 points and 6 rebounds, Matt Nielsen 13 points and Fred House 11. The L.Rytas defense held Cibona to 13-for-56 shooting and outrebounded its opponents by 38-26. Bennett Davison and Scoonie Penn each had 11 points for Cibona. L.Rytas led 21-14 after 10 minutes, while three-pointers by House and Mindaugas Lukauskis boosted its margin to 37-26 at halftime. Nielsen had 10 points in the third period, which ended 56-38, pointing the way to the hosts' sixth consecutive Euroleague victory.

Stelmahers opened the scoring for L. Rytas with a pair of three-pointers, but then Davison and Penn got to the foul line and sank free throws to make it 6-4. Cibona's man-to-man defense didn't stop Simas Jasaitis from hitting a triple from the right corner. On offense, Cibona tried to put the ball inside but they couldn't get there. The L. Rytas defense was aggressive and ready. House nailed the hosts' fourth triple to widen the gap to 16-9 before Penn answered with more free throws. Even a fastbreak opportunity went wrong for Cibona as Davison was whistled for his third foul. Cibona tried to get back on track when Marin Rozic made an easy layup and Mate Skelin added a free throw, but Nielsen brought some energy and got to the rim to make it 21-14 Lietuvos Rytas after a quarter.

Andrius Slezas came fresh from the bench and nailed a new triple for the hosts, then Javtokas added an uncontested layup to start the secnd quarter with a 5-0 run to the first double-digit lead, 26-14. Cibona answered with rejuvenized offense as Penn and Davor Marcelic buried triples to get visitors within 26-20. Cibona still struggled from the line but Penn stayed on fire, making a flashy layup over Javtokas. L. Rytas took charge for good, however as Javtokas pushed in a difficult put-back, while House and Mindaugas Lukauskis hit back-to-back-to-back three-pointers to rebuild a double-digit lead, 37-23. Cibona responded quickly with a basket-plus-foul by Luksa Andric but still was down 37-26 at the break.

Turn-around jumpers exchanged by Javtokas and Skelin started second half. Nielsen continued his aggressive play in the paint, dropping a pair of jumphooks to make it 43-28. The intensified hosts' defence limited Cibona to only 2 points in the first 5 minutes of the third quarter, as Nielsen himself stroked in 6 consecutively and Lukauskis dunked spectacularly to complete a 12-1 run to a 53-31 advantage. Penn with free throws and Davison with a triple were all Cibona could count on to reduce the difference to 53-38. Still, the end of the quarter belonged to L. Rytas as Tomas Delininkaitis converted his chance from the arc to make it 56-38 after 30 minutes.

L. Rytas started the final quarter finding Javtokas inside for a basket-plus-foul. Cibona just couldn't stop big men of L. Rytas as Javtokas and Nielsen dominated in the paint. Davor Kus and Damir Markota put in baskets that helped to cut the deficit, but Stelmahers and House just nailed consecutive triples in response, widening the gap to 67-44. They combined for more points, a difficult layup by Stelmahers and free throws by House, to put the outcome completely beyond doubt at 71-44 with 4 minutes left. There was still a highlight for the home crowd as a superb dunk by Javtokas lifted the lead to 30 points, 75-45. In addition to its sixth win in a row, Lietuvos Rytas had put its name clearly among the Euroleague contenders heading into 2005-06.

Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Lietuvos Rytas
"This was an excellent game for our team, especially on the defensive end. I think this game was our best defensively this season. The only thing that I'm not actually satisfied with is cold weather outside. Everything went well tonight. I'm glad we started the second leg as good as we finished the first one. We are still in the first place in our group. I know it is going to be really hard to keep it, but we will do our best. However, this game proved how the loss of Haris Mujezinovic was important for us, so we are planning an addition to the team in the next couple of days."
ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Cibona VIP
"Only one team has really played the ball tonight, and it was Lietuvos rytas. Tonight we played a different ball game than we did in Zagreb. We could neither attack nor show good defense. You need to put your head in the game when you play in the Euroleague, but we didn't play that kind of game tonight. I want to congratulate Lietuvos Rytas, they showed great basketball tonight."

Players

STELMAHERS, ROBERTS
Lietuvos Rytas
"The impulse for our team was that this game was the last one in the Euroleague this year, therefore we didn't want to disappoint our fans. We especially wanted to win because we had lost our Euroleague debut game in Zagreb. Besides, we were eager to take our revenge upon Cibona by beating them by a bigger margin, and I think we did it with a vengeance. We had lost a big game against Zalgiris Kaunas in our national championship, but we managed to outlive that. I especially want to thank our fans who have always believed in the team, even after the unsuccessful start of the season."
JAVTOKAS, ROBERTAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"I can say that this game proved that we have found our rhythm. It showed that we are a really good team, and I guess Cibona has felt it, too. Furthermore, we didn't relax at the end of the game, which used to happen in the previous ones. We support each other on court, and that is our strength. Cibona's big men are not the strongest in the Euroleague, so it wasn't a very difficult game for me personally."
DAVISON, BENETT
Cibona VIP
"Lietuvos Rytas deserved this victory. We didn't play good from the very beginning of the game. We trailed by 14 points before halftime and managed to reduce the deficit to 11 points, but not more. I don't think the key to the victory for the hosts was shooting from behind the arc. It was more our defensive problem. I personally got a bit nervous after some controversial referees' decisions in the first half."
